It's definitely one of the GladOS modules.

+1 on that one.

Also the sentence "reboot process" would fit perfectly.

BTW my private hope is still that they announce HL3/Ep3 very soon after the release of Portal 2, due to story connections between the two (i.e. Borealis).

Yes, it is. Everybody who has played the end level of Portal 1 should immediately recognize it.

I still haven't decided if I will buy the Xbox 360 or the Mac OS X version of Portal 2. Somehow, I no longer like playing shooters with keyboard and mouse. I also no longer like upgrading my hardware just to play a game. On the other hand, Portal 2 might look better on my 27" iMac i5 at the full native resolution of the display than in the 720p resolution of the Xbox on the same display.

Go with it on Mac OS X. Then you have it for Mac OS X, Windows (PC), and PS3. Also you might be able to use your Xbox remote with it on the Mac OS X version. A few of Valve's games let you do that.

Steam Play covers Playstation 3 also?

Not even close. As long as Apple has control on the hardware PC gaming will never be big on mac. Most PC gamers play on desktops. Majority of those desktops are built from hand picked parts. Gaming will not take off. Fact is no gamer wants a Mac pro when he can build his own rig.

Exactly. I've just built a new Sandy Bridge based machine with a GeForce GTX 570 graphics card. I can change any part of my PC whenever I feel like it which is the beauty of PC's.

No serious gamer will want a Mac unless he's not a serious gamer. Gamers like to choose their own hardware...

I have a 'serious gamer' friend who has a mouse that has some kinda optical refresh rate of 10000. (ie the laser thing checks the ground more often)

he has a special Network interface card with 'Low latency' and a special sound card for 'more accurate sound'

He turns down all the textures even tho he has quad sli so he can have 1000 frames a second

I still kick his ass on my mbp with a magic mouse

Of course, how well one plays a game haven't got to do with the hardware (at least to a certain extent), it's all about graphics and frame rates when it comes to the hardware. Many times a high frame rate makes the game easier to play, but it's not only about that.

The divide between PC and Mac in gaming is thinning.

I can't agree on this as it takes such a long time for Mac OS X to support new graphics cards. The last years it seems as soon Mac OS X has started to support a generation of graphics cards the next generation has been around the corner. For example, the current generation of ATI cards is the 6xxx series (that was released fall last year) and there's currently no desktop Mac that supports this generation of graphic cards (except for the Mobility cards in the latest MacBook Pro's). Same thing goes for Nvidias cards.

Also since the only computer you can upgrade the graphics card in is a Mac Pro, that limits ”high end” gaming on the Mac quite a bit.

Add to that that you can now use any AMD card on Mac Pros (right?)....

No.

Why in the world would Valve start a teaser campaign about Portal 2? We already got screenshots, trailers, gameplay videos, a release date an all.
This has got to be about another game. Plus this doesn't exactly look like a GlaDOS module, more like a bathysphere. Remember that Borealis is a ship, and Aperture Science's Lab in HL2.

EDIT: here is a GlaDOS module. AFAIK, the design hasn't changed in Portal 2. Of course, the reconstructed image looks similar, but it's NOT the same.

I'd go with the PC/Mac version myself simple for the option of mods and user created levels.

Yes. If you buy the PS3 version you get the PC+Mac versions included, if you buy the PC+Mac version you don't get the PS3 version.
I contemplated buying the PS3 version even though I don't have one, just so that I could play it when I did buy one. But the PC+Mac version is £25, the PS3 one £39!

I find that a little hard to believe. Not because of his specs, but the Magic Mouse is just horrible for any kind of fast gaming (which I assume is what you're playing with going by your "friends" specs). The inability to hold the left+right mouse button at the same time, the wireless lag. It's going to make you lose.
I'm a die hard FPS player and believe me I've tried playing games with my wired and BT Mighty Mouse, my Magic Mouse and my wired Razer. In games like TF2 and L4D it is almost impossible (fully so for some TF2 classes) to compete against people with better peripherals.

So something will happen on the 15th of this month...

Maybe they are planning on releasing the Mac version first as a pseudo beta test to test the waters, kinda the way Quake3 was released by iD on Macs first way back when because it was easier to monitor with such a limited array of hardware. The code words do seem to say things about early deployment etc.

let's continue that hope. i miss PC gaming and have been tempted to build another gaming rig. the 360 has kept me from going down that path but i miss tinkering. i don't miss spending $$ on new upgrades every year.

Can't wait for the 19th - but only if there's cake. No cake - no deal!

Sorry but Mac gaming is still a joke.

Message in a Portal

Apparently, XORing each number with 0xFF (or, equivalently, subtracting the number from 255) gives us ASCII character codes which seem to spell out a message:

something
early. but
they're on to me.

the system is

90% of the games I play are Valve's games... L4D2, TF2, CSS, Portal (3 hours a couple times)... with these games available for OSX. I rarely use bootcamp to switch over.

Your missing a hell of a lot of great games if you only play Valve games. Plus the fact that their games run crap on Mac. You should use Windows to play them.

Just like Microsoft has a 100% lockdown on XBox hardware, gaming will never be big on it either . . . .

or a Playstation . . . .
