My point, if a Laptop is all your used to then great, but if you have gamed on a proper machine, you do not know what you are missing out on.

What is a "proper machine" exactly? Isn't it true that your gaming machine could be considered "crap" by some gamers?

Bottom line: there is no "Minimum Specification" for a "gaming machine." A gaming machine is a machine you can play games on. There will always be bigger/faster/better machines than the one you game on. Always.

That said: do Macs tend to fare poorly in this area compared to the average competition? Sure. Why Apple is always behind in the GPU department is a mystery that continues to baffle.

Are you insinuating that a hardcore gamer/modder can be more illogical then an Apple die hard fanboy?? I call shenanigans !

Yeah its the XBoxers and PS3 kids that have wars. Hardware nerds generally just tend to get excited about whatever new things are coming out. They tend to go with whatever is currently the best performing/best priced. Its rare to come across an Intel fanboy or an nVidia fanboy.

Yeah, could be gamers who use consoles.

As for PC gamers, a Quad core i7, running at 4.2 with a pair of 5870s in crossfire, crap???? yeah right, sure its not the best possible, but its right up there near the top high end!

As for bottom line : Games have minimum requirements, and for a machine to be considered a gaming rig, it should be able to run the current titles at the Recommend requirements (frankly min sucks!)

The reason macs are behind in GPUS is 1. Cost and 2. The obsession with thinness, which does not allow for the higher performing GPUs to be used as they need much better cooling solutions. Look at a ATI 5870, fitting one of these bad boys in a imac???? yeah right, its huge, Sexy and thin is more important.

With the 9600M, my MacBook Pro runs every Orange Box game with Crossover Games flawlessly. Which means that the 9600M isn't really garbage. I've never encountered any situation in which this card would cause slower-than-expected performance.

Yeah, the 9600 isn't the best, but it can run Bioshock, CoD4, Red Alert 3, Starcraft 2, CoD6 and probably Diablo 3 at max to almost max settings. Sure, it can't do Crysis, but . . .

Not even the latest 5970 can do Crysis at complete max settings. Its an engine 5 years ahead of its time. Which is how PC gaming SHOULD be if you ask me.

If Valve's games come to Mac, than I may reconsider dual-running Windows. :p Valve makes the best first-person shooters, so this is a great start at reviving gaming on Macs (which really started with iPhone's app store).

Decoded text on "1984" image...

Don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but the projected text in the background of the 6th "1984 commercial" image is actually the text from Valve's official description of the SOURCE engine, with many of the letters replaced with symbols. (It's pretty easy to read once you've recognised some of the words: I started with 'technology' and 'collision detection' halfway down on the left, and it's easy from there.)

I'm taking that as a pretty good indication they've ported the Source engine to OS X.

You can find the original text here (starts with the "Thanks..." paragraph):

I hope it is using all the possible 64-bit technology to make it as fast as possible. This is huge- this is a definitive statement that gaming is common to the Mac in a big way.

I'm guessing you've never been in a hardcore gamer/modder group have you? The stuff that happens on forums like this are like bitch slapping in comparisn.

You said that, hardcore.
When a community is passionate about something obviously there will be fights in arguments, that has nothing to do with the subject being discussed.

And yes, I've seen these so called hardcore groups, it's just that I put the blame on the poeple themselves, not in what they argue about.
If you want to raise some hell you can do it about virtually any subject.

This may be a game changer for Macs altogether. Steam/Valve is one of the largest companies in the PC gaming market and one which is very respected. A move like this may entice other game developers to follow. Very interesting. Only time will tell the results.:D

I don't know why people are bitching about this.

THERE IS NO NEGATIVE SIDE TO THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WHATSOEVER.

None. Zero. Zip. This announcement is a 100% good thing.

- It will mean more customers for Valve.
- It will mean PC gamers' Mac-using friends will finally be able to join them in games.
- It means LESS MONEY FOR MICROSOFT.

All in all, it's a win all around. Go Valve! This is of course assuming that this isn't some epic April Fools' day joke in the making.

My, that's rude! What if the guys who rated this negative were Microsoft shareholders?

And no, this is not supposed to be taken seriously

I hope this comes to fruition soon; my Ventrilo servers all use the Speex codec already, so with this all ported to OS X, I won't need to dual-boot anymore.

Of course hopefully they port CS:S and MW2 over.

- It means LESS MONEY FOR MICROSOFT.

At least Bill Gates with his Microsoft money donates and supports impoverished and needy folks around the world. Apple just keeps it in the bank collecting interest like a greedy bastard.

You've never actually partaken in one or more I'm geussing then.

Last week, Valve Software generated some excitement among gaming fans who noticed Mac OS X menu components and other items in the most recent release of the company's Steam distribution platform for the PC. Combined with reports of Valve recruiting Mac engineers, the evidence suggested that Valve may be planning to make a move into the Mac platform.

MacRumors today received a teaser image from Valve appearing to show Gordon Freeman, protagonist of Valve's Half-Life video game series, with an Apple logo on his chest. The image was accompanied with the following explanation: "In anticipation of an upcoming announcement from Valve."

Valve has not offered any additional information on what we can expect from them or when more news might be available beyond "soon".

My fellow brethren who have suffered so long in the MacRumors Apple Game's section... THIS IS OUR MOMENT. SEIZE IT AND BE GLORIOUS.

I've also seen people do the same with video games but I still don't think that videogames somehow make people unable to properly discuss, I just assume that's how some people are.

Anyway maybe we just need to use a different approach here... why don't you try explaining to me why talking hardware and specs turns someone into a raging beast set off to discredit everyone else's opinion while discussing other topics doesn't?
If you manage to properly explain this to me then I'll agree with you, otherwise I'll still be convinced that every topic can potentially do this to a person who's passionate enough (and not very polite).

The funny thing about this thread is that normally Apple looks down on gamers, don't think its a cool thing to do. Turns out there are lots of closet Mac gamers out there.

Or the funnier thing would be if next Tuesday's MBP update has
an Nvidia Quadro FX 1800M GPU so that playing these games will
rock!
