Most are only expecting a 330m GT or 5830, MUCH better than now, but I mean they are no 280m's??

or 260's

even a 9800m gts ties the radeon

These cards aren't shooting for the moon.
Apple is more than likely going to need to clone the ENVY 15 for the 5830. Otherwise the 330M looks like standard fare. I'm not willing to pay Apple's prices for that.

Steve doesn't like ATI in the past
True enough. It's just that the M11x has set a new standard for me in mobile gaming for me.

My MacBook hasn't stopped working. For me Apple has stagnated so much to the point where they do bore me. Something is wrong when they can't give you the incentive to buy another Mac short of a critical hardware failure of your current one.

I know how you feel, I don't know if I would replace my MacBook if it died on me.
I still like the desktops though

335m is still a class 2 card though.

You know, it would be nice to get a complete chart that shows the endless f**king rebranding that Nvidia has been doing. Everything minus the GTX 200 line has been a friggin' rebrand with minor tweaks. 8x00 = 9x00 = GT100 = GT200 = GT300. Five "generations", all darn near the same stuff with a new name. Ugh.

Lets imagine that the iMac will be the "gamers" choice when it comes to gaming on a mac. The problem is then that 27-inch 2560 by 1440 pixels is a too high resolution for pretty much any gaming GFX to run smoothly. Why not just only support the game running at 1280 x 720? The will of course lover the actual DPI but it will not make the game look blurry because of the 4:1 pixel ratio. In this way you could have pretty decent fps only of the expense of resolution which would still be "native" but not as high.

In before people mock my grammar an spelling: Im from Denmark, this is not my native language.

Have you actually played any games on the 27 inch iMac? I have one and can play most of my games at full resolution (Bioshock, all the doom 3 engine games, all the LEGO games).

Even cidered or crossover games including those that will be ported by Valve to OS X or more demanding stuff like 2009's Wolfenstein play smoothly on here (at native resolution). The only game I can't is Star Wars The Force Unleashed but it plays great at 1920x1080. Even at that resolution however the image quality doesn't suffer much if at all. Seriously, most of the dozens of games (the former where merely examples) I have installed on my iMac run great at HD+ resolutions.

9600m GT is garbage, luckily we are getting an update...

With the 9600M, my MacBook Pro runs every Orange Box game with Crossover Games flawlessly. Which means that the 9600M isn't really garbage. I've never encountered any situation in which this card would cause slower-than-expected performance.

You're missing the point. Valve's not targeting the people who care about benchmarks or chipsets with this announcement. Most Mac users don't care about that, but they'd like some quality casual gaming choices. So settle down, will you? :)

But talking specs is fun.
Besides, it wouldn't be half bad for Apple to beef up the GPU department. Sure, gaming can be enjoyed even without the latest and greatest graphics card and without worrying about "O GOD GTX SLI 250+ FPS ON CRYSIS ULTRA", but a smooth game (60-ish fps) is always a better experience

But talking specs is fun.

Trust me talking specs is not fun. Not when you get to the hardcore crowd where the critical thought process ceases to exist. Like software no longer becomes relevant and its only the hardware that matters. 'Can't get that extra FPS in Crysis.' 'Nah its only the hardware. You must have a crap rig.' (This is when they have an overclocked i7 and max ram) They completely forget that coding practice and drivers are relevant. Then somebody suggests to try the Beta drivers or something and they like 'OMG OMG OMG YAYYY'.

Trust me its a scary place, and Ive been there. Its an endless loop. Also wastes a lot of money and causes a lot of frustrations. The crowd I was at eventually pushed me away because I stopped being a 'true gamer'. Plus I got sick of Cables and found my love for Linux.

It's fun if you do it as a hobby with friends or just go it alone. I wouldn't get into a group or scene about it though. I just do it because I like messing around with stuff and learning how things work. Nothing like making a computer for the first time and seeing it all work :)

Funny how this thread went to ****. It started as a celebration of Valve's teaser announcement and ended as a pointless dispute about graphics hardware.

Lock it please.

Opinions are not facts true, but they are the one thing that can supplement facts in this case.

Argument = Gaming on notebooks is inferior / bad
Rationale (or in debate, criterion) = I like Desktops

Counter = That is your opinion
Counter Rationale = Lots of people disagree (proven by the vast market of "gaming notebooks" even the brand of Alienware, as well as people that just like to game on their MBP's)

Opinions can only be used one way, they are the only thing like that.
They can build an argument just fine, and supplement facts almost completely. However you cannot use your opinion to discredit something else, or others.
Think about that for a minute, and it makes perfect sense. That is not even my argument, it's Lockes.

I like to use the phrase, one mans trash in another mans treasure. If you believe that gaming on a laptop is great, then that is perfect for you. I know many many people that think a MBP 2.8 17" is perfect for thier gaming needs.

Myself, i have a MBA, MBP 17 2.8, Imac 27" and a Gaming rig running an i7 at 4.2, with 2x 5870 GPUs.

MBA - Useless for gaming
MBA 2.8 - If i am on the road, I will game on it. At first it seemed great for my gaming needs, till i got a 27" imac and gaming rig
27"imac - Much better then MBP, though on some games it starts to get sluggish
Gaming rig - Sets my standard for gaming, when i move from that to the other two, the gaming experience feels crap.

My point, if a Laptop is all your used to then great, but if you have gamed on a proper machine, you do not know what you are missing out on.

Developers create games with some serious eye candy that are designed to run on Crossfire/SLI running on 5870 cards +, Apple hardware in regards to GPUs is a long long long way behind. A 4850 mobility is crap in todays gaming GPUs. If Apple wants to get into gaming, they really need a desktop model between the Imacs that run mobility GPUs and the Mac Pros that are just way way too overpriced.

That's not different from any other kind of discussion.
Personally I think most of the people involved in this thread are mature enough not to turn this into a flame war

Personally I'm enjoying the technical discussions so far and I'm learning new stuff about OpenGL and whatnot, as long as people behave talking about GPUs is not more dangerous than talking about anything else

Haha, you're totally right about the resolutions! Apple loves having hirez screens on these iMacs but the chips aren't going to handle fullscreen native rez very well. :) Oh well, I have no problem running a little below if needed.

How about this for thought...

It's pretty much a known fact that Apple has underpowered graphics cards in most of their computers. CPU, RAM, display all really good! Video card... Average at best... Average has been good enough really since there were not enough games on Mac to really make it a worthwhile system to use as a gaming rig. Hence bootcamp being a favorite for Mac gamers. Now that we are seeing support of Valve for Mac games there will be a new demand for higher powered graphics on a Mac and, if Apple is smart, they will offer newer graphics cards with their next lines. Not necessarily by default... but give users the option to chose a top of the line card. They make more money off of it anyway! Now that there's a demand I see no reason why they shouldn't offer. :)

I'm excited. This could be big!

I'm guessing you've never been in a hardcore gamer/modder group have you? The stuff that happens on forums like this are like bitch slapping in comparisn.

Are you insinuating that a hardcore gamer/modder can be more illogical then an Apple die hard fanboy?? I call shenanigans !
