Ok. That's pretty cool.

It also worked great as a low cost remote-access app.

Am I missing something? Why would you want to play a game on your iPhone instead or your Mac or PC when you need to stream it direct from the Mac or PC anyway???

I don’t want to play on my phone. But ipad is perfect. PC is upstairs. More comfortable couch and husband that I want to spend time with are downstairs. Win/win. This will be awesome for me. Looking forward to trying it out and glad Apple and Steam were able to work things out.

I'm not sure of its value if it's local network only except for Apple TV.

If I'm home with my computer, I would rather play on Steam on the computer than an iOS device.

I suppose it could be used during longer bathroom breaks :).

Really surprised they have allowed Steam Controller support... now, does this mean we may keep our hopes up high for a possible native DualShock 4 support (and proper L3/R3) for the PS remote play app in the future?

Even before the MFI controller specification, apple has allowed unique physical controllers, as long as they only worked with the developers own apps and not as a universal accessory.

For example, the Duo Gamer, which only worked with specific gameloft apps:

Duo made a pinball one too:

Atari Arcade:

The only "controller" that was somewhat universal was the iCade, and they actually presented to IOS devices as a bluetooth/wired keyboard.

It's a good bet that the Steam controller will be Valve Steam app only, and the only way we will get official support for ps4/xbox one controllers is if Sony/Microsoft release their own streaming apps, and the controller will also be locked into that app only.

EDIT: I know the Xbox one app for IOS does not support streaming, although there is an app called OneCast that works very well (but you have to use an MFI controller, unless you are close enough to actually use the xbox controller connected to the xbox you are viewing.) If sony has an official app, I imagine they could do the same as valve and allow the PS4 controller to work in their app (and only their app.)

Not really. It’s really simple. Bring your own people and don’t try to monetize their platform without participating in supporting it. This way they are in compliance and don’t have to share revenue because they bring their own customers as it should be. If they need Apple’s customer base to grow then Apple deserves their cut for that access. It funny how no one thinks Google should provide them with free ads on their platform.

I have been waiting forever for this! This is awesome! Can anyone confirm if it work with a wireless Xbox One or Playstation 3 wireless controller?

No, this will be impossible within Apple's current restrictions.

They can support their own Steam controller due to it using bluetooth LE, and MFI controllers natively supported by Apple, but xbox one and PS3 are regular bluetooth, which is not supported in any way for third party apps.

But I heard the new Xbox One X controllers has MFI support and that some people can pair it via BT to iPhone.

Works great, and with a bit of port forwarding I have it working over 4G as well :D

What port do you need to forward for it to work remotely?

The second generation xbox one controller got regular bluetooth support, only works on windows and macs ( using steam drivers at least ), and possibly android but not sure, but it's not apple certified mfi.

I forwarded these ones as TCP/UDP 27031,27036-27037.

I just needed to pair it normally locally first, then I forwarded the above ports, shut off wifi to test and it connected right away over 4G.

I’ve been playing The Isle lately. My 3 year old is starting his dinosaur phase and is obsessed with watching me. Instead of having him on my lap I can just play it on my normal 165Hz 1440p monitor and he can watch it on the iPad with guided access on.

Took me half an hour to get it working. Kept trying install updates and it thought that macOS get blocking them, even though I had approved them. Finally after restarting steam and computer a couple times I managed to get it to work. Unfortunately playing the game in full screen mode only filled up part of my virtual iMac 5k desktop through steam link and the rest of the screen just flickered. It looked fine on my computer screen, but not on my iPhone or Apple TV. Then, when trying to quit it just froze steam. Seems there are a few issues to work out.

So the app mentions the possibility of being able to pair a Steam controller now which as far as I know is not MFI yet we still can’t pair PS4 controllers to Apple TV.
