Who ever is directing the closing is doing a horrible job. I expect bad TV from NBC but this is just horrid.

Does Bob Costas ever stop talking.

I actually laud Team Canada for putting Vancouver Canucks goaltender (and local Vancouver hero!) Roberto Luongo this time around. Why didn't they do that last Sunday?

If one country gets 51 golds, 21 silvers and 28 bronzes they've fairly clearly done better than another country which gets 36 golds, 38 silvers and 36 bronzes (source).
The only fair way to determine the rankings of countries is by giving 6 points for a gold, 5 points for a silver, and 4 points for a bronze.

:crunches numbers on giant calculator:

Well whadayaknow! The United States beats China, 550 points to 523 points!

The Top Ten countries by that measure:
  1. United States (550)
  2. China (523)
  3. Russia (355)
  4. Great Britain (239)
  5. Australia (227)
  6. Germany (206)
  7. France (194)
  8. South Korea (160)
  9. Italy (133)
  10. Japan (128)
Lemme know if the medal counts change so I can revise my "fair" formula if necessary. ;)

It truly was a wonderful two weeks and a great Olympics. I only wish they picked better performers for the closing ceremonies though :( Though the dancing mounties and flying moose were great!

Yeah, as soon as Nickleback was announced I changed the channel. They must be our worse export since Celine Dion.

As a Canadian I apologize for both.

I agree the music wasn't that great. Unfortunately a lot of people do like them, else they wouldn't be selling millions of albums. :(

Though, that one french girl was pretty good. Anyone know her name? Also, that song sung by Nikki and two others after the athletes came in was pretty good / catchy.

I think the best part of the closing ceremony was the 3 or 4 minute standing ovation for Team Canada's hockey team!

^ Then you missed Avril and Hedley then... on behalf of all Canadians, I apolgize for them too.
Music tastes are subjective. Some people like one musicians work and hates another. Tell you what, how about you upload a demo tape in MP3 format. No? Are you telling us that the old axiom "those who can, do but those who can't critique" is true?

Putting on a good performance all of the time is impossible but I thought they did a decent job tonight. I'm not necessarily a fan of all of the musicians that played but I did not hate their performances either.

Speaking from experience, it can take quite a bit of practice to get a performance right and a good rehearsal is no guarantee that everything will go off without a hitch at the main event.

I'd also like to here a demo track from Bytor65. Either put up or shut up.

NathanCH, I'd also like to see you do better. The competing was over and this was meant to be fun, not to be judged and critiqued. It's not like anyone sang way off key. You guys are such a drag.

Maybe they should have gotten William Shatner to do a spoken word song instead!

When do we start the LONDON 2012 SUMMER OLYMPICS THREAD? mate;)

I'd say in about 870 days we can start that thread up! I'm certainly excited for it now though even with all the bad press that the Brits gave to Canada. The Canadian media will happy to expose small problems in London 2012 in return! :)

London 2012 should be very good, I just hope the weather can hold up but that's not really something we should worry about for a few years. I'm wondering if "own the podium" had funding for summer athletes as well. I guess we'll find out.

Woah there buddy, calm down. You're the one making this conversation a drag. We didn't know we weren't allowed to have opinions here. This isn't the soviet union.

Speaking as a Canadian, I'd like to apologize for all of the "no talent" sticks in the mud posting in this thread.

The closing ceremonies were meant to be fun and it was never supposed to be about the acts performing. I would not be surprised in the acts offered to perform for little or no money in exchange for free publicity. Given this, it should not be surprising if they did not go all out with their performances but rather thought of it as performing at a "party".

Whatever dude. These were the closing ceremonies to the Olympics, not a concert. It was a party atmosphere and everyone there enjoyed themselves.

I'm sorry to hear that they were not up to your standards Mr. Simon Cowell. ;)

Now, serious and awe-inspiring the closing ceremonies weren't, but I still like how our Northern Neighbors (oops, Neighbours) made fun of all the Canadian stereotypes. Besides the "I'm a Canadian" section (cringe-worthy), every other section was great.

I especially loved the fact they gave LeMay-Doan another chance to light the cauldron. It's very rare to have a second chance these days, eh? ;)

Geez Nickleback fans are so touchy. :D

I never said they were off key. I didn't listen to them because I can't stand Nickleback. I didn't know I wasn't allowed to dislike certain bands.

Really that closing was totally dragged out. They should have tightened it up a LOT.

Anyway it was an amazing Olympics. Results far exceeded my expectations and we won Hockey Gold (more important than 10 gold to many Canadians).

Where was Bachman Turner Overdrive?

EDIT:

Good thing it wasn't the Summer Olympics, imagine the damage one of those shotputters or javelin throwers could have done to Chad Kroeger's head given the sufficient apparatus - say, oh, a Flip video camera or a can of soft drink.

I mean, we all saw what the general public could do with just a rock, imagine a highly trained athlete hurling something small and hard towards the stage, there'd be tears for sure.

Congrats guys on your hockey win yesterday. Great game.

We here in America didn't get to see all of the closing ceremony. I missed Avril Lavigne and Nickelback :( NBC cut it to air some new crappy reality TV show. But what I did see was good. Catherine O'Hara seemed a bit off( not her usually funny self) and I'm not sure why.
