Good for you... Others live in areas and would rather have a slower network that works 99% of the time than a fast one that works 50% of the time...

The key is choice. You should have a choice as to what network you want your phone using.

Having the iPhone on Verizon and ATT would be great. More choice = More customers. It's that simple.

Wasn't Verizon the first Steve asked when Apple is coming out with the new iPhone? I remembered Verizon declined the offer because Apple seeks to control their customers and split their royalties. Plus, wasn't Verizon one of those that doesn't give a crap about phones and devices because the big network companies all believe that people subscribe to get the service and have nothing much to do with the device? I guess after AT&T held on and stuck with Steve, they did get their reward with bunch of subscribers jump ship from other networks for the iPhone. AT&T loose some, but wins big at the end, even with their crappy network reception...

This report made me imagine an image with Verizon CEO on the floor wiping Job's shoes saying sorry and pleading to get a popular device on it's network...

Not so sure

i have to agree with this. if a verizon iphone was already being produced, i doubt the ceo of verizon would be making these comments.

and to all the people arguing over simultaneous voice and data, the real part that matters is that apple uses it in their commercials to bash verizon.

First, not sure the Verizon CEO would say something this provocative without Apple's blessing.

Second, new iPhone versions are released in early summer which means that early adopters obligation to AT&T will be coming to an end about the same time. This tidbit from Verizon muddies the water for people waiting for the new OS and associated hardware. AT&T wants everyone to re-up for another two years so they have breathing room for their network upgrade. The Verizon quote could cause some (including me) to delay automatically renewing with AT&T until it is determined whether a Verizon badged iPhone is vaporware.

My two cents.

Actually, early adopters' contracts with AT&T ended last summer. This summer the contracts for the people who bought the iPhone 3G ends. They're not the early adopters.

Jus' sayin'.

Since much of the middle of the country STILL can't get an iPhone because AT&T does not provide service, this is welcome news indeed.
You must have an interesting definition of "middle" because I'm in Kansas and you most definitely CAN get AT&T service, and the iPhone. In fact, most of my co-workers have AT&T because it gets the best reception in buildings from using the 850 mhz spectrum.

its not happening. he didn't say they got the iphone. he said he asked, in an attempted to get idiots to stay on their network.

Understood. The first iphones were not subsidized if memory serves. The 3G is the first unit that was subsidized that would fall into the two year window that is coming up this summer. Does that make sense or am I missing something.

Lets use our common sense hats here. Jobs hates people who talk to the press. Why would Verizon CEO go public unless Apple had already told him to stick it?

1) Verizon is notorious for it's proprietary applications on its network. Crappy one's too.

It would be a huge coup if Apple said, "Sure, but you have to open up the network to work and allow all of the iPhone functionality (and possibly other functionality in v4.0), like visual Voice Mail and Safari and Maps and etc.

Which I doubt Verizon will ever do.

I think that's the biggest block to iPhone on Verizon. They simply don't want to give up control of the phones, much less allow the app store.

I think you are right, the original iPhone had no contract in the US. I think the contract will be running out this summer for all of the people who bought the 3G in the first summer it was offered (2008).

While verizon is notorious for disabling features on phones, I think they would reconsider that policy in order to get the iPhone sales.

The iPhone is hugely popular, even though it is only on ATT in the US. I think that AT&T is paying a lot of money for the exclusivity. Only a phone as popular as the iPhone can convince a lot of people to change carriers.

Owning one of the first, that is right the first iPhone did not have a contract...

That's a story I'd like to hear. Who, specifically, did Apple approach and who turned it down? Assuming CEOs talk to CEOs, I wonder if it was Seidenberg himself who said no.

Whether you love or hate AT&T or Verizon, this initial decision really shows you the perspicacity of each company.

Whoa! Someone's been rooting around in Dictionary! ;):D

Name a current smartphone that Verizon has crippled.

I believe it, i believe he asked for the iPhone, I believe there will be a Verizon iPhone, but I DON'T believe it'll happen this year. Apple will most likely do it when LTE is fully rolled out in the U.S. (or atleast in a few places.) Right now, Verizon's speeds are too slow, they can't do "talk & surf", they're data plans are too over the top expensive(unless Apple does something about it.) & their network will get too overloaded and people WILL start complaining. Let alone, they drop a lot of calls, just like every other normal carrier. Also!! I'm starting to and never believed the Wall Start Journal. And why should we? All these other news sources say stuff and we don't go psycho about it. If Verizon's CEO asked for the iPhone yesterday, then how are they making a "CDMA compatible" iPhone for Verizon? I only hope they were talking about China, or some other place in Asia.
Apple has done too many good things with at&t in the first place. Even starting in 2005 with Motorola, releasing an iTunes phone on the Cingular network. Did they do anything with Verizon? Psh, please. Where's he facts or evidence.
:apple: iPhone HDS-2010(i hope.)

If Verizon carried the iPhone, I'd get it in a heartbeat. the iPhone on AT&T is the only thing stopping me from getting one. Pretty sad, considering I'm a developer for iPhone/iPod Touch apps.

It's already been proven that Verizon's 3G speeds are slower than AT&T's, plus no talk and data at the same time ..

no thanks. If they do get the iPhone I'd stick with AT&T.

agreed - i have no carrier loyalty but rather prefer what i can and cannot do with my portable device...and the iphone is huge for me both professionally and personally, including phone and data simultaneously...

Why So Many Negatives?

Why would you rate this a negative? Surely a good thing that the exclusivity to AT&T would come to an end?
