The key is choice. You should have a choice as to what network you want your phone using.

Having the iPhone on Verizon and ATT would be great. More choice = More customers. It's that simple.

absolutely agree - could not have said it better - iphone on multiple carriers is a good thing...

It would be great just to see it on another network, I don't really care whose. Hopefully it'll be the push AT&T needs to truly fix some of the problem areas I'm always hearing about (yes I'm aware they've supposedly already started).

1) Verizon is notorious for it's proprietary applications on its network. Crappy one's too.

It would be a huge coup if Apple said, "Sure, but you have to open up the network to work and allow all of the iPhone functionality (and possibly other functionality in v4.0), like visual Voice Mail and Safari and Maps and etc.

Which I doubt Verizon will ever do.

Well Android phones are not forced to use any Verizon applications so I would think the iPhone would not have to either.

First, not sure the Verizon CEO would say something this provocative without Apple's blessing.

Second, new iPhone versions are released in early summer which means that early adopters obligation to AT&T will be coming to an end about the same time. This tidbit from Verizon muddies the water for people waiting for the new OS and associated hardware. AT&T wants everyone to re-up for another two years so they have breathing room for their network upgrade. The Verizon quote could cause some (including me) to delay automatically renewing with AT&T until it is determined whether a Verizon badged iPhone is vaporware.

My two cents.

Apple would still be too stupid enough to go to a company that they "first" went to, and that made ads that were including Apple's mobile device, and allowing ads, such as the Motorola DROID, to approve of what the ads explain while at the end Verizon's logo appears in BIG RED BOLDS! This device is not that reliable anyways and their service will be far more overloaded and turn out to be slower. That's why Apple made and iPhone 3G"S", because they want the speed and power into its phones. Not the slowness.

no thanks. If they do get the iPhone I'd stick with AT&T.

This is not just about existing iPhone users and being able to switch to Verizon.

Much more significant are all the existing Verizon customers who (for whatever reason) are not going to switch to at&t and if Apple doesn't release a cdma iPhone will buy an Android phone instead. This is millions of sales that Apple is currently allowing Google to get unchallenged.

First, do you think any carrier can do the iPhone better? I believe carriers weren't ready for the iPhone, none of them. AT&T however has another issue and that is coverage. I am a firm believer now that Verizon and I would have a happy union if they'd get the iPhone. I may be alone here but for me Verizon wins with coverage in my area. With the Droid they showed us that vCast won't be on an iPhone like device. They've managed to get their heads out of their asses (which is more than I can say for Apple) and listen to their customers who don't need vCast or a service similar built into the phone further crippling it.

Second, if Apple wants to pout about it then sure, they should stay away from Verizon, but let's be real. This is business and in business you make mistakes and try to rectify the error. Verizon may be kicking themselves now for their decision but who knows, maybe they've made provisions for devices like the iPhone to come their way and if that happens maybe it'll be a real seamless transition. Did you ever think that Verizon admitting a stupid mistake is a step in a better direction?

Third, it is laughable that people don't want choice. Carrier choice is what I'd like to have.

For all those thinking all Verizon phones are locked down, take another look. You may be surprised.

I may not be ready to give up my iPhone for a fancy user replaceable battery but I sure as hell am ready for some changes.

bravo +1

Oh and forget starting a conversation with the pretty girls you pass on the street. They are too busy ignoring the world around them while texting or talking on the phone. This is definitely not progress.

Women will often appear busy with their phones so guys they aren't interested in won't bother them. If they are interested the phone gets ignored very quickly.

We would really like to carry the iPhone ........... please, please, please, please

It'll come to verizon no doubt. It's all about the cash.

With that said, it won't come now, not as a CDMA network. Whenever verizon gets LTE up though... then well see a verizon iphone.

The question is when, and how it will relate to the iPhone 4G or "HD", whatever it's called.

Like Apple says, they like to "think different." and you're right. But we all know what us anti-noVerizon iPhone people are trying to say. We're trying to talk about ways this is bad for Apple. AT&T has good coverage, fast speeds, and a very very good relationship with Apple. Don't believe me? Do your studying and watch the keynotes. I'm not saying Apple isn't doing an iPhone for Verizon, but i know there will be one eventually. But not this year or next year. It'll be the best for both Apple and Verizon. That's why i said LTE would probably the best chance Verizon would get it.
:apple:

It's already been proven that Verizon's 3G speeds are slower than AT&T's, plus no talk and data at the same time ..

no thanks. If they do get the iPhone I'd stick with AT&T.

Great point. There are a ton of Verizon fanboys here that will run to Verizon if the network would ever get the iPhone. Then they will complain that they cannot be on a call and check email etc.

Steve - Please do not go to Verizon, any other provider other than Verizon...

Apple needs Verizon way more than Verizon needs Apple at this point in the game.

-Since the iPhone was released, Verizon has not had a single quarter with negative subscriber growth for postpaid customers.

-Since the iPhone was released, Verizon still has one of the lowest churn rates in the industry.

It's not like Verizon is bleeding customers over the iPhone. If Apple stays with AT&T their overall base won't grow by very much.

Did Verizon miss out on some possible extra growth without the iPhone? Maybe. However business is far more than getting the best numbers possible. Look at AT&T's reputation now. It's pretty crappy. People associate AT&T with subpar service, while Verizon is associates with the most reliable network and the best coverage. While AT&T was busy drowning as their network overloaded Verizon was making upgrades and beefing up their network getting ready for the smartphone revolution. AT&T's growth happened too fast, while Verizon's growth was controlled.

Anyone remember the days of AOL dialup long before broadband? They were the first to offer an unlimited dialup price for a cheap amount. People flocked to AOL, their growth was extraordinary. Great, right? Wrong. It grew too fast and couldn't keep up with demand so while AOL was being killed the other dialup companies like MSN, Compuserve, etc were beefing up their capacity and rolling out unlimited dialup at a more controlled rate. Even after AOL solved their problems they were known as the unreliable dialup provider with a lot of busy signals.

The smartest thing Verizon did was let AT&T get the iPhone. AT&T got to deal with the growing pains and should Verizon get it this summer then they get a tested product and are prepared to handle it.

By the way I'm no Verizon fanboy. In fact, I believe people keep overlooking Sprint. They're the true hidden gem of the cell phone industry in the US in my opinion.

The story that won't die. It'll probably be many years before we know the full extent of the initial agreement between Apple and AT&T and of their true relationship.

This is one rumor I won't believe until I see the iPhone in a Verizon store window.

It went like this:

"OH please please pleeeeeeeeeeeeeese let us have a cut of the iPhone pie!!!! It's not fair that AT&T network sucks, and they are reaping the benefits!!! I don't care what anybody say. It's our turn now to suc--- 'er, I mean, shine in the limelight of a great product!!

Phooey, on "'Ello Moto!!!!" "

Amazing how these boards continue to harbor so many people who are so incredibly misinformed.

First. It is a FACT that Verizon does not cripple their smartphones, and hasn't done so in years, that this myth keeps getting repeated over and over again is a testament to the incredible ignorance of most. That is a FACT. You can have your own opinion, but you can't have your own facts.

Second. It is indeed true that CDMA is on its way out. What is not true is that this will happen "right around the corner." LTE will take years to deploy, and even when most of it is done, Verizon will continue to use CDMA for voice--right through this whole decade. So even after LTE is real and here, CDMA will still need to be supported in all of Verizon's LTE phones for years and years to come.

Third. Just what exactly do some people have against competition and choice? If you are an AT&T fanboy (I'm absolutely amazed these people exist) you can continue to give your hard earned money to said corporation. And others who do not like AT&T will have a choice. Competition may bring prices down which in the end helps everyone, AT&T subscribers and others. Some of these responses actually hoping that AT&T remains the sole carrier make absolutely no sense in any rational world--except it's clear by now that these people are really elitists who don't want the iPhone available to everyone because then their precious phone will not be as "exclusive" or something like that. To that, I say go cry a river.

The iPhone will come to Verizon. When it's coming is up for debate, what is not up for debate is that when Apple decides to do it, it WILL have to include CDMA because Verizon will not get rid of it for years and years to come. That's just a fact.

Why is the Verizon guy announcing this?

1. In negotiations with apple now, but not finished. This puts some fire under apple's butt, helping verizon's stance in negotiating.

Doing this is a sure way to piss Steve off, HURTING verizon's stance in negotiating.

2. It's a message to stockholders, "profits and customers coming.... give us time..."

That message would be "we are getting the iPhone" not "we would like to get the iPhone"
