Legal or not, it's immoral. Not all, but some people have no other way to utilize the Internet.

I agree but will the increase really satisfy Verizon's need for cash?
It's not really about that but more about them not really offering the service for some time and wanting to move more and more people off of it.

What about the customers with the "Talk & Text Plus Data $20 Discount Promotion they where offering back in the day? I have a 5s & 5c, this is on my bill under each UDP line.

Line Access $9.99
Email & Web Unlimited $29.99
Talk & Text Plus Data $20 Disc -$20.00

So my promotion goes by by?
Hopefully it won't go up by $40.

I have this as well, which is why I really wanted to go under contract again before this new change. I'm hoping we keep the $20 discount, but if you aren't under contract you will get the new $20 increase as well.

Well I decided to give it a shot and upgrades at the best buy site. I'll report back when I get my phone.
Let us know, I will have to look into this too since I have 2 verizon UDP plans I use all the time as routers but I have a dummy iphone 5 I sometimes swap into when I go into the store.

I would much rather get more for my money's worth if I am forced to pay an extra $20 no matter what. It wouldn't be such a hit if I can just buy phones.

Just got my Rose Gold 128GB iPhone 6S+ from Best Buy, courtesy of UPS about an hour ago. Used my last upgrade on my 4-line NW family plan (each with UL data). $499 with $20 for expedited shipping was a nice price, chose Rose Gold since it was the only option left at the time of the order. Got the notification from UPS MyChoice yesterday, My Verizon indicated that unlimited data was extended to 11/10/17.

Removed the SIM from the 6S+ and cut that plan-ending SIM card into several pieces. Removed my existing SIM (cut down from a micro-SIM in my iPad 3 to a nano-SIM that's been in my old iPhone 5), and powered up the 6S+. Checked My Verizon about 5 minutes later, and the 6S+ is showing up on the line, with glorious UL data intact and the 11/10/17 date intact! Woo-frickin'-hoo!

Installing the 9.1 update right now. Cheers!

New Math, it's what my business partner did.
Cost to purchase 6s 128 GB using the Best Buy Method
$424.00 (includes tax)
BB site also says $35.00 Verizon upgrade fee if true that would be $460.00
Activate new iPhone 6S and wait for it to show up on the My Verizon portal - wait about an hour, and don't use it - make sure your contract is extended and UL data remains. Then power it down, remove the SIM and put the SIM back in your trusty iPhone 5. Flip your iPhone 6 for roughly $700-ish dollars. Keep your UL data at the current price for 2 more years, with about 8-10 months of data paid for by your iPhone 6 sale price difference.

Two happy campers. You with the phone you like and the plan you like, and the person rocking your now-former iPhone 6. One grumpy camper - Fran Shammo, VZW CFO (that's Customer F***er Overer).

To the Best Buy Method n00bs - do read the slickdeals first post. I'm not going to regurgitate any of it. I've done it 3 times, and I'll be using my last and 4th upgrade shortly. There's one step to take upon arrival of the iPhone - take the iPhone 6S out of the box, remove the SIM card and cut it up then throw it in the trash. If anyone activates that SIM, your UL data will likely go the way of the Dodo Bird.

One add. There's a Car Toys near where I live. One of the reps told me that they'll sell you an iPhone 6S and use an upgrade, then let you walk out the door with it - still wrapped and unactivated. YMMV.

Awesome, I'm glad it works. I'm curious though. Currently I mostly use my Verizon accounts in mifi devices not for phone calls since the minutes are so low and I can't always take calls on google hangouts. If I do the trick to get a subsidized cost phone can I then sell the phone or use it on another carrier or is it LOCKED into verizon for 2 years or something like that? For instance, I would love to swap my Sprint SIM in my iPhone 6 for calling into a new Best Buy IPhone 6S but not sure if it is compatible and unsure if that verizon Best Buy phone will be locked to Verizon of if that new law that passed allows it to be transferrable, so many questions.

We all need help or have questions! :D

Here's what I can offer, that I KNOW. VZW's handsets are unlocked; I've used my small company's and personal handsets with other GSM providers, including MVNOs - we're based in the PNW, and there's large coverage holes for all of the carriers and my guys travel with PAYG SIM cards to put in those VZW handsets and devices (including MiFis and iPads, the latter of which we can use UL MHS). I have had 0/zero/nada issues with putting other SIMs in my VZW devices that fall under the 700MHz umbrella.

What I DON'T KNOW: whether VZW handsets/devices can be used with Sprint/USCC SIMs. I don't use Sprint solely due to the 300MB/billing period roaming limit - here, in the PNW that's a killer since there's roaming areas that are larger than most of the Eastern US States. I don't use USCC - despite their awesome voice quality - because of their requirement of needing to be based in one of their "Home regions" and their roaming limitations relative to data.

I have about 50 handsets associated with VZW - some of which we've picked up from trades or bought outright/subsidized. Not one of them have had issues with being "locked"; all of them, literally, each of them, are iOS devices as some of my clients ban Android phones from their premises. I've been swapping SIMs since 1999, and we've had no issues with the VZW devices - even subsidized phones are not SIM-locked, as I gave my business partner an iPhone 6+ to just last week to pass on to his daughter for his personal account (hers was stolen in Vegas, she's on VZW) - it works perfectly, no questions asked.

You may have to work something with the Sprint/VZW thing, I can't speak to that. If there's some "thing" between both providers, buy from VZW, flip it, and buy what you want. It's that kind of market right now. Cheers!

Because those with unlimited plans are no longer in contract.

I have an unlimited plan and I am under a 3 yr contract. Is it legal now?

Many of the UDP plan folks aren't under contract. I hadn't been under contract with VZW since 2012 (and I am still not). So, just like your cable company or power company or any other service, they can raise your rates anytime. You, are always welcome to respond by leaving their service, however at this point, I think VZW isn't too worried about it.

I think the original poster was probably referring to those still under contract with unlimited plans. I am one of those users, so I'm actually interested in the legal issue here

Are you being affected by the price change? (How did you manage to be on a 3 year contract?)

I have no idea, but I don't see how they could legally change our monthly fees. When we renewed our contracts, we said that we didn't want to lose unlimited data and they just never made us switch. Recently, we've found loopholes to keep it the past couple renewals

Odd to see a contract for that long, don't think they even have that. As far as changing prices while on contract, as I recall, technically they can do that provided they notify you about the change, and if it's a material change (which this would be) give you the option to leave your contract without any penalty within 30 or 60 days if you don't agree to stay on and continue with the new pricing. Alternatively, they might simply not apply the change to someone under a contract, at least not until they are out of contract.

Right, I assumed that would be the case. Maybe it's a 2 year contract? I can't remember off the top of my head.

Most if not all wireless plans, contracts and Terms+Conditions have a clause that allows for the changing of price or included features

Legally ( not that carriers always listen to big brother at the FCC or other places ) they must notify you a minimum amount of time in advanced ( or provide proof the attempt was made in a reasonable good faith effort ) and you must agree or disagree to said changes as defined in notices provided by said carrier

In short or tldr version
Yes its legal if they do so according to proper procedures
