I new England there is a night and day difference between VZW and AT&T, the latter being superior. Better signal, more LTE,etc. I am not talking about looking at maps. I am talking about driving around different states/highways/parks and actually using our phones. There really isn't much of comparison.

East coast overall verizon wins, between Boston and the Carolinas.

I've been reading the forum threads while trying to make a decision about our Verizon grandfathered plan. We currently have the 1400 min/unlimited text/unlimited data on one smartphone and 2gb on another smartphone and two basic phones. I started looking into a new plan in order to change my sons basic to a smartphone.

Long story short, thank you all for posting the pricing breakdowns with ATT and Verizon. We had ATT over 15 years ago and it was so bad we've been with Verizon ever since. I understand though they have greatly improved in the Phoenix area and are considering a switch if it saves us money. After visiting an AT&T store yesterday it looks like one component is missing from the Next pricing plan and that is the upfront down payment on the new phones we would have to purchase.. I believe each was about $50. In my calculations, we then pay over $650 for the iPhones with the 26 month payment plan.

There is no down payment, you pay the tax upfront.

Without Next, you pay:

(24 * $25) + $199 + $36 = $835 for the subsidized base iPhone.

I'm pretty sure you're going off old, inaccurate information.

Last summer we traveled halfway across the country and back and my AT&T phone worked in all of the same places that my wife's Verizon phone worked. I also had better LTE speeds more than 75% of the time. Compare this information to the same trip we took 5 years ago, AT&T has made some HUGE improvements to their network.

Needless to say, she didn't have a reason to keep paying Verizon and switched to AT&T. As an added bonus, she has a solid fast LTE connection where she works now. Something that she didn't have with Verizon.

Depends on where you are but overall Verizon still has the edge by a significant margin. I'm sure one can also find isolated areas where AT&T, T-Mobile, or even Sprint perform better than Verizon. I'll agree that AT&T has improved quite a bit since 5-6yrs ago. To the point where many can get by with their coverage but those who need the most broad coverage in the US still choose Verizon.

I've never had Verizon, and have never wanted them either.

AT&T has never let me down as far as coverage goes. Granted I'm not an extensive traveler.

With no simultaneous voice and data, more expensive plans and less friendly policies, if coverage is equal where you live, why would ANYONE want Verizon.

I'm not saying Verizon isn't good, they just over-hyped as far as I'm concerned.

I've been on AT&T nearly 10 years, and wouldn't still be here if the coverage wasn't excellent.

Check the coverage in your area Verizon subscribers and if it's equal Run, don't Walk to switch to AT&T before the add a line deal expires 03-31-14.

YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

No thank you. For the reasons you like ATT I like Verizon, I think their coverage is better, clearer to the places I go. I don't care about SVD. I'll stay with Verizon whose customer service is top notch.

How about we just agree that Sprint is probably the worst these days in terms of pricing/coverage plus internet speed?

I have both att and Verizon. There are drawbacks to both carriers. But they are leaps and bounds above everyone else.

That's a very reasonable statement. :)

My coworker let me borrow one of his lines and test AT&T because I told him my test with my Verizon iPhone last month was an epic fail

Turns out this test was flawless at my home using his account

So yesterday Verizon lost my 3 line account to AT&T- I had to get my iPhone 5s reprovisioned again which was the issue the last time and why service was so slow on AT&T

So the phones are Verizon's right? And you did a BYOD? You're saving money because you didn't have to buy a device? Buy a device and it's a wash?

Depends on you situation. Verizon doesn't discount off contract. I pay less for more data. And contract free.

You're judging something that you yourself admitted have no experience. That is, you've never used VZW yet you knock them.

for me, I found VZW to offer better products and services when I signed up for them. Coverage is never equal and always has to be considered. In the Boston area ATT isn't bad, and I've had them. I also had multiple dropped phone calls. Something that is a rarity on VZW.

The major difference between the two carriers imo, is that VZW spends a lot of money and effort to upgrade and improve their infrastructure, something that ATT doesn't always do.

I've found from a customer support perspective both ATT and VZW to be equal, both helped and were polite. I'm paying just about the same on VZW as I had on ATT and I get a superior network in exchange. When I drive up to New Hampshire, one thing is evident when I was on ATT. I'd lose complete coverage once I got to the White Mountains area. with VZW, I had LTE.

tl;dr
One size doesn't fit all, and while you may be a satisfied ATT customer, there are those who prefer VZW

Actually my other 2 lines get my old phones so no wash here - so worst case scenario I will pay $25 more if I decide to buy a new phone for my line when the iPhone 6 is released

Clearly you prefer Verizon, but where is it written in stone that Verizon spends more than AT&T!? Again, just blanket statements from the Verizon faithful swearing that Verizon should be accepted as the defacto best.

So while you try to correct my stance, you simply reaffirm the way I feel about AT&T. However, I don't just make blanket statements like AT&T has the fastest LTE so, that's why I pay for a premium experience".

I'll mention it in passing or interacting with another poster, but never just AT&T is the best cause they're the most reliable, or the fastest.

What would be your guys mantra if Verizon matched AT&T prices!? "Well, they're rewarding me for being a loyal customer on the number 1 network?"

Lol, too funny...

While AT&T may work well for you wherever you're located, the numbers don't back up your claim that Verizon is overhyped.

In 2013 even in the face of T-Mobile's aggressive price drops, Verizon was the only carrier unaffected in terms of subscriber growth even though they have the most expensive rate plans in the industry. AT&T and Sprint on the other hand, had flat growth last year.

You've admitted yourself that you don't travel very often so I have no doubt that AT&T is working great for you, maybe even better than Verizon in your area.

The large growth that Verizon keeps reporting every quarter in the face of industry-wide price drops from the other carriers proves that their coverage superior to the other 3 to the point where people are willing to pay the higher premium for it.

I agree about the voice+data, that's a benefit of being on a GSM carrier like AT&T but with Verizon's less dropped calls and superior coverage I feel the benefits outweigh their disadvantages.

You conveniently omitted the parts that I had more dropped calls from ATT and they have no coverage to locations I frequent. As I stated, coverage is a primary factor in selecting a carrier. Call quality is another and I've had fewer dropped calls with VZW.

I don't care if you continue to praise ATT, all I'm saying is its not a good fit for everyone.

If ATT had better prices, the same or superior call quality and coverage. I'd select them. I'm not married to one carrier, I choose which one best suits my needs

I'm sticking with VZW until I can determine if TMO will work for me. I won't bother with AT&T at this point.

TMO has awful coverage where I live and my wife hates sprint, so that leaves ATT and VZW for available carriers to choose from.

That is what I am going to try out. I have a $60 smart phone locked to TMO that will be used as a test. If it sucks, then maybe I'll consider AT&T or just prepaid. I have not been on contract for over a year which has been nice.
