If any Apple fans watch this and go "Oh - but that's not strictly true" or "That's a lie" or "Err - No - actually, you can do X, Y Z" etc etc

Welcome to the world of any realist who's seen a I'm-a-Mac advert in the past few years. This is EXACTLY the same.

A taste of Apple's own medicine - and I can smell the hatred, hypocrisy and flame wars starting already.

Verizon must be losing a lot of customers. It's the usability of the device, not the specs, but some people are too thick to understand that

Exactly. Specs are only half the battle. We'll see how it is to use hands-on. But like others have said here, hopefully Apple takes notice and steps it up just a bit...

By the way, am I in the minority when I say I don't miss a physical keyboard at all?

Physical Keyboard

I hope by the gods that Apple will never add a physical keyboard to the Iphone for the sake that it is ugly and causes blistering and calluses. The great thing about Iphone and virtual keyboard is there are no limits to what is possible. I've adapted to mine quite well and fast. It doesn't require much to learn

Saw it and was confused

I saw that commercial on TV last night and my reaction was, "Huh, what the hell is this commercial about." I had no idea what message they were communicating. I don't think the average consumer knows what Droid is?

This was covered last week already.

Not really impressed. Verizon has always had the worst phone.

Just look at the Storm!

Everyone in the room last night had no idea wtf that commercial was talking about. I was the only tech geek around that knew what it was. Horrible advertising but very optimistic they will finally push Apple into making a better phone.

I am really interested in this device...I am nervous to give up my iPhone but I imagine that Android has enough functionality to compete. One thing that worries me is the investment that I have made for iPhone apps.

I think these Droid commercials are so dumb. They tout things like allowing open development, but the great majority of people seeing these ads don't have any idea what that means nor would they care if they did. It's another example of a company not getting the point. You don't need commercials to advertise all the tech points, because the people who understand/care already know about your device through the internet and have already formed an opinion. This is one thing Apple does a good job of.

Also, when I first saw the these dumb commercials, at the end I was confused as to why they wouldn't show the product. I never follow through on websites to see what a commercial teased me with, and I can't imagine I'm alone, so the whole thing seemed like a waste of time. Though, if the pic in the article is indeed the Droid, I can see why they avoided showing it: it's fugly (looks like a phone from the 90s).

I like the ad.

Can't you just? :D

The interface of the iPhone is so beyond it's years, that EVERYONE is trying to compete with it and totally losing! Nothing will ever be as good as the iPhone, get over it.

That's probably the most important part of the article.

I think Verizon has found not just a cash cow but a cash herd.

I am a windows users and I see the android platform similar to the windows platform where it can be used in multiple configurations, hardware, and devices.

IMO there isn't anything close to a jailbroken iphone on the market.

The difference with the android phone (droid) is there was more collaboration on the features and design. Kinda like the neighborhood kids ganging up on the block bully.

The iphone in all its greatness doesn't really have a strong supporting cast of phones offered by ATT.
The android platform will have many variations and offerings.

The phone industry has tried to take on the iphone individually, I think they realized there is strength in numbers and the battle will become a war. A war that will benefit all of us. ATT can't afford to lose market share, Apple may shape their approach to lessen any anticipated market share while verizon and its phone suppliers put on a full court press exploiting the shortcomings of the iphone.

as far as music and other media goes, I think that will be a non-issue as well. there will be stores all over the place and syncing wil be a non-issue.

Personally I would love a phone with removable media.......

The first half of the commercial was great (all the iDon'ts)...but the ending ruined it...like some kind of sci fi horror flick.

...of that (otherwise effective ad) is the line:

"iDon't run widgets."

OK, sure, maybe they aren't called "widgets." But there are 45743594389578934578934 apps in the App Store, with more coming every day.

The App Store is arguably the iPhone's greatest strength. It's certainly not a weakness.

Ha ha, that's exactly what I thought! Most of their claims made sense, but I'm not sure what this one is even getting at.

It's look interesting and I'll definately check it out, but if those pics are of the actual device I'm dissappointed that they decided to go with that cheap looking gray plastic. Is it really that big of a deal to go with a higher quality plastic or maybe even a rubberized surface?

Bring It!

Oh that is so good.

I'm sure we all agree that this will push iPhone development a lot further.

This is a much better ad than those lousy Mac PC commercials.

I love the fact that Verizon is taking the offensive, and the ad agency they contracted is awesome!!! My jaw dropped when I saw the "There's a map for that" ad campaign; and now this "Droid Does" ad.

"iDon't run widgets."

I found this puzzling, since the iPhone actually started out running only widgets (on the Web). It can still run those but also runs full-blown apps. Or were they talking about background widgets?

And what's with that odd lip at the bottom of the Droid? Was it put there just to hold the Verizon logo? It looks otherwise useless.

Quite the opposite for some of us. I've got my iPod Touch, and I was looking forward to an iPhone. However, I need my phone to be first and foremost just that: a telephone. I am sick and tired of my mother cutting in and out on her iPhone when I call her every single time. Never happens with my dad on Verizon, or with my phone on Verizon. I was holding out for a Verizon iPhone, but now I'm just going to go down and get as plain of a phone as I can at the Verizon store when the contract rolls around in a month. Service is far more important to me than the iPhone.
