I have a Verizon phone but hate the company. They were the only company with decent service in my apartment area.

I love the iPhone but the monthly bill is outrageous.

The new Verizon Droid looks very PC-like and BORING!

I enjoy the competition from other smart-phones and hope Apple will improve prices.

I think it is interesting to note that the iPhone has been on the market for about 2 years and only now do we see competition. Apple is way above other companies when it comes to technological innovation and I think Apple have iPhone GSX right around the corner which will blow away competion. Just add OLED, better camera, and multi-app usage abilities with faster processors + Flash capability and we will all be drooling about the iPhone and forget about small things like the Zune and the Droid.

Ha ha, that's exactly what I thought! Most of their claims made sense, but I'm not sure what this one is even getting at.

background apps. Widgets just run in the background, so you don't have to lanuch the weather app just to see what the weather is like. That's just one example. Android also has applications too.

Widgets just sounds better than background apps.

Apparently this was NOT Verizon's doing, but Motorola. Over on the Apple 2.0 blog on CNN Money they say that Apple has been testing the iPhone on Verizon's next-gen LTE network and the Verizon CEO has been making visits to Cupertino. So iPhone on Verizon isn't dead yet apparently.

As for this Droid phone, lots of tech experts who have gotten a chance to handle one of these says it's the most impressive phone they've handled since th iPhone. I guess we'll see in a few weeks. That crazy Cloverfield-esque commercial said November. I signed up for the email updates out of curiousity.

Wow. Another phone that tries to do everything under the sun and even transforms into a 12 foot robot when docked? No thanks i'd rather have a simple but intuitive UI that works. Features are nice and all but not when I won't use 75% of them do to usage difficulty. Sigh. It seems petty for every manufacturer to try and position their device as an iPhone killer when they are oft anything but. Leave that to the tech blogs.

The UI in Android does work and can be as simple as you want it. I played with a MyTouch and was pretty impressed. It is fast, beautiful, and works well. I can't say that I prefer it over an iPhone yet, I would have to use it for a while to really tell. Not sure that simple and intuitive argument works against the my touch or this new thing from Verizon. Over Windows Mobile or all other junk, yes, but Apple should be worried about Android. So should Blackberry.

One of the areas Verizon has been testing around the southeast Georgia area near the GA FL border the LTE. ATT coverage there is extremely poor

was Verizon's logo or name even in this commercial? I don't see how everyone is associating them with the droid if they're not even in the commercial... unless of course, they've publicly stated it somewhere...

even so, the commercial appears to be created by motorola, not verizon, so maybe verizon DOES still want the iPhone... I sure hope so...

the details of this ad are irrelevent.
for me, the point really is that since sf bay area att service is so marginal ,
i wouldn't hesitate to trade in my beloved iphone for even a slightly second rate wanna be on a network that actually works

I couldn't wait for this to finally hit Macrumors cause I can't post on AI.
What's this? DESPERATION!!!!
The iphone is just one of many media phones on the market. You got BB, HTC Samsung. Hello! Forgot them? But it is always the iphone. You know why? Cause it is a freaking awesome device. You telling me if you get a 5 mega pix camera you going to be shooting Angelina Jolie for vanity fair. I don't think so.
Oh, shooting in the dark. Oh snap that's right! Ouch I forgot to mention the optics on camera phones aren't really that good. And multiple apps running right. I've seen a jailbroken iphone running multiple apps and it gets sloooooow and the battery goes fffffffffffffffffaaaaassst. OMG!!!!
Apple, Verizom Moto just to name a few are publicly trade companies with a clear refresh path. And they better cause Wall Street will crucify them if they don't. So, get over your self when you say Apple needs to step it up. Honey that has already been planned out. THAT IS THEIR BUSINESS. TO MAKE NEW, BIGGR AND BADDER STUFF!!!!!!! Hello! Anybody home.

Verizon had a chance to have the iphone but Apple wasn't going to kill off the out of the box features like itunes, app store etc so Verizon could V cast the hell out of it. And make no mistake about it, Verizon done got all bad a** with that commercial but that moto droid will be Verizon's b****. Finally open source is cool you know. Everybody can contribute to the common good.Micasa sucasa. Get out of town. Anything that threatens Verizon's money making business paradigm will get a dirt nap.

So remember kids, the art of good business is being a good middle man. Bye bye.

If any Apple fans watch this and go "Oh - but that's not strictly true" or "That's a lie" or "Err - No - actually, you can do X, Y Z" etc etc

Welcome to the world of any realist who's seen a I'm-a-Mac advert in the past few years. This is EXACTLY the same.

A taste of Apple's own medicine - and I can smell the hatred, hypocrisy and flame wars starting already.

The advert itself is fine. But Apple delivers. There's something solid and proven behind Apple's adverts.

This latest attempt to dethrone the iPhone seems like it'll be just another also-ran device to throw onto the ever-growing me-too pile.

Everyone's targeting the iPhone for a reason. But these attempts to attack Apple directly seem like a recipe for failure, of Palm-like proportions.

DroidDoes.com takes you to a Verizon website. Need I say more?

yes Verizon and not Motorola made the commercial read the fine text at the bottom when the ad is in transformer mode.

They seem to on these forums. While there's a healthy contingent of AT&T customers who are happy with their service, there's also a number of people who go on about how Verizon has awesome service everywhere or if Verizon had the iPhone we'd have tethering by now.
While I can't speak to Verizon's service, I think people have unrealistic expectations about what Verizon can do. I call these people fanboys.
If they weren't fanboys, those people would be honest and admit that Verizon would be like AT&T and unable to handle the load of providing service for all the iPhone customers.
Or they could admit that any phone company would be unprepared for the crush of iPhone customers and would be overwhelmed. But I don't see that happening when people wish Verizon got the iPhone exclusivity instead.

It really depends on where you live.
AT&T just doesn't stack up in some areas of the country.
I was 100% satisfied with AT&T service in Miami, Florida.
Service everywhere, insanely fast 3G, never any dropped calls.
Now that I live in New York, I'm constantly cursing AT&T when a quarter of my calls are dropped, I can't get a signal inside, or 3G won't connect even when I have 5 bars.

It is Verizon. Read the front page...not to mention they are launching an iDon't ad campaign, this is the first commercial. It's a Moto phone running android 2.0, but its still a VZW commercial.

I think its pretty clear that Verizon knows it won't be getting an iPhone for awhile which is why they are now supporting their Android line-up so hard. First a public announcement with confirmation that they will allow Google Voice, because to them its about being open. The "there's a map for that campaign" which was great, but they were still lacking great phones. And now their "iDon't" ad campaign here to support the release of Android on VZW (specifically the Moto Droid on this one) and the HTC Desire (Hero), and possibly one other. I like competition, T-Mobile is even trying something super drastic with its Project Dark.

Even though I'm happy with my iPhone and have no interest in switching to the "Cloverfield 2 Droidphone" of the ad, I'm glad to see Apple's competitors apply pressure and look for the weak spots in Apple's armor. I hope to see Apple up the ante yet again. In the long run, these digs at Apple's products help us as consumers.

Great!
Anything that pushes more innovation/competition in the US cellular market has got to be a good thing. Too bad none of the carriers will pick up a "gimmick" like only charging for outgoing SMS...you know, like most of the rest of the world does?

The phone looks very nice...Android looks like fun to me, though I'm happy to camp out on my HSDPA (3.5G) enabled Windows Mobile phone...just not a fan of giving Google (or anybody else) all my info to store on their servers.

As for the Apple fans complaining about the tone of the ad, it's Mac vs. PC redux...and it's completely on target. The iPhone is feature-limited compared to Symbian, Android, and Windows Mobile in many important respects. Put up or shut up on this one :p

This phone is ugly, and I still dont understand the Android Hype personally. The only phone I'd currently ditch my iPhone for is the HTC HD2.....now THAT is a phone.

It Is Verizon Thanks !!!!

iPhone still coming to Verizon in 2010. Change the blog post, you're wrong.

That's a bunch of junk from a blog nobody's ever heard of. Whoever wrote that doesn't even understand cellular technology. Or maybe their "sources" don't. "CDMA iPhone on Verizon’s 4G LTE network." Before Verizon went for Apple's jugular, I could have foreseen a 4G iPhone that would be capable of running on Verizon's and ATT's forthcoming 4G networks. But not so much now. And never with a CDMA radio.

Anybody else notice the fact that Lucasfilms owns the Droid trademark? Could be something relevant, but I'm not sure what. I am sure that George Lucas doesn't give up his rights for something he doesn't support and I know when he licenses those rights, it doesn't come cheap...
