Every time I think I might join Verizon they go and do this. I guess I will stick to my unlimited data plan from cricket.

They can’t downgrade your video quality if you use a VPN.

Which VPN? It seems any time I find a service that seems honest, reliable and secure an article comes out about that service about how easy it is to hack or that they are selling your information or how the cost goes waaaaay up after the introductory period.

However, the biggest kicker is that Verizon says, moving forward, HD video on all legacy plans will match Beyond Unlimited's HD quality. In other words, even grandfathered customers will soon be limited to video quality of 720p on smartphones and 1080p on tablets, which is sure to elicit some frustration.

The title doesn't match the content. Video quality is not limited to 720p on tablets.

I'm still stuck with a choice of AT&T or Verizon. T-Mo is a no-go, fo sho.

I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile and haven't looked back. My bill is less than half of what it was and I get free hotspot and it includes internet & texting when I traveled to Canada.

AT&T used to try to charge me extra for all that. Verizon and AT&T are both ripoffs for consumers, they make most of their money from corporate accounts.

Go Unlimited & Beyond Unlimited sound more like No Unlimited & Beyond Absurd. I have zero problems limiting video on basic plans to 480p but throttling at anytime for any reason, not just if you've been a bandwidth pig, is a farce. MVNOs have better offerings. So much for my plans on switching to VZW this fall.

I have T-Mobile and I hate it. Service is slow and customer service isn't all that good. I guess you get what you pay for right?
Wait what? T-Mobile's customer service is consistently ranked the highest and I've had outstanding service from them - far better than I could ever dream about with AT&T. My downloads speeds are also a lot better than what I had with AT&T.

Agree T-Mob service is problematic but it doesn't seem ATT or VZW are the answer. You do get what you pay for but just because you overpay doesn't mean you received a quality product. I had ATT for years. It was consistent but the speeds were nowhere near what they advertise for LTE. If I got 5mbps I felt blessed that moment.

Been a Verizon customer for 17 years and they are really starting to piss me off. Saw my bill go up $50 a month a few months ago when I switched to Unlimited from a 20Gb plan. They didn’t tell me they were going to up my device fee as well. Now reducing video quality for unlimited plans?

Definitely considering T Mobile. Tried them out for a few months about 5 years ago and while good (faster than VZW in many areas) too many dropped calls and no reception inside my work building was a killer. May go check them out again this weekend and see their current offerings since I am sure their network has improved since then.

I'd love to see stats on each carrier as to how often and in what markets they hit the threshold where they have to throttle due to network congestion.

This! And I think there should be an indicator on the phone to tell me if I’m being throttled. Maybe the carrier name turns red or something like that. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if I’m being throttled or I’m just in a bad service area.

Sure hope AT&T doesn't follow suit. I left my grandfathered mobile share plan for the benefits of the new plan. How can they just change the terms like that and not expect people to be angry who signed up for 1080 video and are now told they can only have 720 video?!?!

I have to say: I'm happy with my AT&T Unlimited Plus plan. It's $90 ($75 for the plan, $20 charge for 4G iPhone, $-5 discount), but the speeds are excellent and the tethering is good... and I can choose whether or not to have my video throttled (they call it "Stream Saver"). I also get free HBO with it (which I do actually use) and can get DirectTV Now for an additional $10... which I plan on doing soon.

All in all - I've been happy with it since I switched from my old metered plan.

I use NordVPN and so far so good. Used PIA before, but their speeds weren't all that good.
They can't throttle VPN traffic, so I use it to stream high quality video on my iPad Pro 12.9 on TMo with no problem. Why pay $10/month more for ONE Plus when I can pay $3 for a VPN I use for other reasons as well?

My Verizon service has degraded so much over the past year. This is the nail in the coffin. Im switching my 6 lines to Tmobile.

Might want to try one line first. T-Mob is great when it works. But it doesn't work in a lot of places. Forget about using it in the back of big stores, rural areas or even moderately populated ones off the interstate like the panhandle of FL. ATL is spotty even though it has a lot of interstates. And building anywhere -- just cross your fingers. I wanted to like TMob but feeling frustrated now. This news about VZW makes it worse because it's a real Hobson's Choice at this point.
