they tried pulling this with the xoom only to back off of it come game time. i would not be worried about that, but more if you go month-to-month are there any fee's etc, thats where it will get ugly and won't be widely discussed until you get hit with the bill

I have confirmed that there will be no activation fee on the Verizon iPad 2. The data network it will function off of will be our pre-paid data network and you will be able to manage your plan and account right from your iPad 2 just like on AT&T. Here is the reading material for everyone.

Well that sucks. It's not like it's a deal breaker but it's just lame. (I like AT&T better anyway )

From what I cans see on those pages, specially the last one is that Verizon has it tough. I don't see anything on that chart that would make someone choose them. The only real plus is their plans are much more varied. Everything else is an AT&T win; specially the Wi-Fi support and roaming.
Coverage is why I'm choosing them.

What your seeing on that last page? Everything looks similar, minus plan prices that is. I'm leaning towards VZW because when I'm away from Wifi I want the most robust network available and I already know there are places I go that my DroidX has 3G data and my 3GS has Edge or nothing at all. Since its a data device the whole can't surf and talk on Vzw doesn't bother me like it would on an iPhone.

Go right ahead. But in an area where both are equal in coverage... I think Verizon is in no position to bargain.

I would probably go with att if they had 3G here. I live in the largest city in SW MI and att is the only provider that doesn't have 3G. They've been promising it for about 3 years now.

I agree to an extent. I live in NE FL where both have GREAT coverage. AT&T is obviously faster overall but there are some reasons I would choose Verizon. One is that when traveling in between destinations Verizon has more consistent coverage. Also when in certain situations when you enter a building, GSM penetration can suffer. Just some things to consider when making a decision.

As of yet I don't know which 3G model to pick up. I like the speed of AT&T and reliability and coverage of Verizon. I wish Apple would have just put both into the same device.

Other than not being able to stack more than two plans in a month and no int'l SIM, what is so bad about VZW? Looks to me that you whip out your credit card and buy data as needed.

I was talking about Verizon on the whole as in the whole no simultaneous voice and data thing along with their speeds be surprisingly slower than ATT. On the iPad I'd rather have faster data which is why I'm choosing ATT.

Last time I checked, simultaneous voice/data was not an issue on the iPad. ;)

Anyway - I have has both before - and at the same time. While ATT sometimes has the upper hand on speed as measured via speedtest, etc. it does not necessarily mean that you actual throughput is any better. Personally (in Austin, TX), I have a much more consistent experience with either VZW or Sprint than I ever had with ATT. I am on a Sprint EVO now and my wife and daughter still have 3GS's. My wife cruses me often for leaving her behind when I went back to Sprint! Obviously, YMMV depending on where you spend most of your time.

Well I don't like being locked into a 24 month contract just to use my ipad. That's why I give thumbs up to AT&T for allowing month to month and the ability to skip months if you don't want it. Kudos AT&T

activationfee?!!

activation fee?! I get it, they really try and get as much as they can.

This is very true. I have had both AT&T and Verizon at the same time and using data, the AT&T doesn't really SEEM faster. Pages don't really load faster. This has been shown in several Verizon vs AT&T iPhone 4 videos as well as in my own testing.

For downloading items the AT&T would definitely have the upper hand.

Is it just me, or is 1GB a little too low for $20?

I mean wouldn't you blow through 1GB of data in no time flat?

Where do you see anything about 24 month contract at VZW??

I'm glad this has been cleared up, Verizon iPad2 it is!

I love how the latest tweet now became this:

More information regarding the activation fee for the iPad 2 will be available upon launch. *JB

In response to this question:

If I get iPad 2 & use 3G infrequently, say 2-3 times a year, several months apart, will I be charged activation fee each time?

I admit my eyes aren't what they used to be. I have read through the Verizon sales sheet posted here and cannot find where it says there will be no activation fee. Granted, it doesn't say there will be one either.

Given the varied reports and the fact many of us have been told by Verizon an activation fee exists I think a definitive "no activation fee" statement is needed to settle the issue.

If the document specifically states this, please point it out. It is tough reading a scan like this in a browser window. I could not find any language which would preclude activation, or any other fees over the stated data plan rates.

Guess Verizon made my mind up for me. AT&T iPad it is. I'm not going to gamble and get the Verizon iPad in the hopes that they don't charge me an activation fee.

On a side note, does anyone think that Apple themselves would know what their partners are charging their customers? I'll try asking an Apple store employee tomorrow.

Verizon re-activation policy for Ipad 2

I emailed Verizon support about activation/reactivation policy, here is what they just sent me:

Thank you for choosing to contact Verizon Wireless. My name is Lauren and I received your e-mail regarding your inquiry as to what would happen if you suspended or cancel service with the iPad 2 and if you would be billed another $35.00.

I understand your concerns related to the iPad 2 and you just want to know up front what you are dealing with.

I have to correct the information that the prior coordinator had given you. Our database information has been updated and I do not believe what was given is accurate. For the iPad 2, when activating service, if you are going with the pre-paid service using a debit or credit card, there is no $35.00 activation fee and you will be billed month-to-month. If you stop using the service with pre-paid, say after the first month, you will pay the activation fee ($35.00) whenever you use the pre-paid service again outside of the monthly pre-paid options.

You can still replenish your pre-paid plan with the different data options. Keep in mind, that if you suspend your line on the pre-paid option, you will lose out on the remainder of your monthly pre-paid plan. If you have suspended service with the pre-paid option, you can still replenish your amount, before the monthly access is up, to avoid paying the $35.00 activation fee. Remember, you have 14 days to return or cancel the service and there is a $70.00 restocking fee, that will be billed to your account.

If you outright cancel service, there is no penalty since you would be purchasing the iPad 2 at full retail price. If you were to re-initiate service on month to month after canceling, you would pay the $35.00 activation fee. The special promotion for customers getting the pay-as-you-go, month to month service from the iPad 2 launch, is that with a debit or credit card, there is no activation fee. Not the same if service is cancelled or activated later after having the month-to-month pay-as-you-go plan.

In the event you need to contact me on my phone, you can call me directly at 240-568-2199 extension 7745.

Which is why I said "Verizon... on the whole".......

Further, it's my opinion. If you don't want AT&T don't get it, but I'd rather have quicker speeds.
