I'll see about itemizing it this week and reporting the process, I tend to not making it sound simple but it really is if you don't mind making some effort.

My bad I didn't realize it was you that made the post. lol

Here are my questions:

Did you have to get a new number for your iphone?

Can you turn off the LTE data plan with the iPad and still keep unlimited data (ie activate it for one month, then turn it off, then activate it again)?

How much extra does it cost you?

So basically if you have the iPhone 4 you're screwed? You need the Nexus...?

Ok, this isn't rocket science...yes, still some science, just not the kind required for rocketry. Short answer, yes, you're screwed.

iPhone 4 (or 4s) - NOT LTE CAPABLE on either AT&T or Verizon. It doesn't matter how much you hope, pray or wish...you'll never be able to pull an LTE sim out of any iPhone 4(s) since they can't use them.

The swap is easy if you're already an existing VZW customer with unlimited data on LTE. Same kind of micro-sim for VZW LTE phones as used in the Verizon iPads.

Cutwolf - if you don't already have an unlimited data plan with VZW or AT&T you won't be able to get one. Both providers switched to offering only tiered data plans to new customers last year.

Yes my iphone ended up with a new number, I use google voice so this wasn't a concern for me but might be for you also your iphone will be on verizon's 2GB data plan as they don't offer unlimited anymore.

I moved my iphone plan to my ipad but it's still considered a phone plan in verizon's systems (they see it as you moving to a 4G phone)and like any contract, your on it until its up unless you pay the cancellation fee. The only one I can cancel is the newly added family plan i added to the iphone(the 2gb one) because you are not receiving a new phone from them your not on any contract with that new number.

It's $40 plus taxes basically. $9.99 for a new line on my family plan, $30 for the 2GB data plan for that line, plus whatever state/local fees/taxes added so around $45ish.

There is also a one time activation fee of $35 but ask for it to get waived the fee.

Alright, that clears it up for me, thanks.

Not sure if I want to get stuck paying indefinitely as I'm around wifi most of the time. Might have to go and actually get a 4G phone and swap sims when I need it.

Damn tiered data plans!!!

You could always move your iphone to a "4g phone"(ipad) and use skype but you'd have to be around internet all the time.

I've got a friend who's giving me their Thunderbolt 4G and transferring their Verizon contract with unlimited 3G/4G data to me... and I just got myself a new Verizon LTE iPad, and I want to use this Thunderbolt's unlimited data on the iPad.

What's the best way to do this, and how much will I end up paying?

- do I need to keep it setup as a phone plan, or can it change to a "tablet plan" and still maintain unlimited data?
- if I keep it setup as a phone plan, do I have to pay for "phone service"
- since the Thunderbolt has a regular SIM, what's the best way for me to switch to a microSIM for my iPad? ... or, can I just have Verizon transfer the Thunderbolt service to the microSIM that comes with my iPad?

Thanks!

If you don't mind being under contract add a line to a share plan get an lte phone. Activate it then transfer your number to it. Then the new line will be your iPhone which will have a new number and a limited plan. If you don't want a new number call forwarde the lte phone line to your new number. This will allow you to receive calls as usual. Then put your lte phone sim which will be on a unlimited plan or double data (special promo) in your iPad.

If you want to avoid a long term contract you can add a line and buy a use Pantech Breakout off eBay for around $80.

I would only recommend this if you are a data hog.

My experience in getting an unlimited LTE verizon iPad

Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd share my experience of getting the unlimited LTE Verizon iPad. I only had a 3G Droid X, but had been thinking about upgrading to an LTE smartphone. I went to the local Verizon store with printouts in hand from the Internet that explained about moving the SIM card from a 4G capable phone to the iPad, and that Verizon wasn't able to keep you from doing this due to the agreement they made with the FCC. The lady initially told me it couldn't be done, even after reading over the papers. I told her I was pretty sure it would work. She went in the back and checked with their experts, which confirmed that it couldn't be done. I told her I wanted to try anyway. She said that she really hopes it works out for me, but that she doesn't think it will, but if it does, to be sure and let her know. So, I upgraded my Droid X to a Motorola Razr phone. I couldn't try the swap in the store since I didn't have a paperclip to eject the SIM from the iPad. So, I went home, swapped them, and suddenly had unlimited data on my iPad. I logged into my account and saw that it now showed the iPad with unlimited data. I was a happy camper! I then went back to the Verizon store and told the lady that it worked like a charm. She was really excited and couldn't believe it worked. She checked her system and agreed that I now have unlimited data on the ipad, and started telling her co-workers, "This guy has unlimited on his ipad!" None of the employees could believe it. Anyway, I put the SIM that had been in the iPad into the Motorola Razr. The Motorola Razr could now do only data since it had no voice plan. I had her add a voice plan to the SIM, and now I have unlimited data on the iPad and up to 4GB of data per month on the Motorola Razr. (They are running a promotion right now where you get double the data, so instead of 2GB, I get the 4GB.)

That's awesome thanks for sharing. So does that mean you can not get unlimited data on both devices? How much was the 4g on your phone?

So when you used the sim on the ipad, your voice plan immediately got canceled? i am asking because i thought you had to have a voice plan in order to maintain the unlimited data plan.

Right, since I only had one unlimited data plan, and moved it over to the iPad, I had to sign up for new service on the Droid Razr. Since they don't offer unlimited any more, I could only get the 4GB for $30 on the phone. No biggie, though.. no way I'll be going through 4GB on the phone with unlimited on the iPad.

No, the voice plan is still there, it is just unusable since it is on a SIM in an iPad. So, both my phone and my iPad technically have a voice plan. You can't get rid of the voice plan and maintain the unlimited data. So, it costs me about $40 plus taxes for the unlimited data on the iPad.

I think the part I was talking about was that my phone couldn't do voice immediately after I put the SIM from the iPad in it because the phone then didn't have a voice plan, only data.

if you don't need cell phone service, can you just avoid signing up for new service and still have the unlimited data on the ipad? i ask because i already have att and just bought an vzw unlimited line and am planning on moving the sim to my ipad. if i don't have to pay for a voice plan, that would be awesome.

As long as you can somehow get an unlimited data SIM, you can put it in the iPad. You don't have to have a cell phone service through them if you don't want to as long as you can somehow get the SIM card. (Also, note that it has to be a Micro SIM, not the Mini SIM which some phones use. I think there are ways to cut it down or something, but I haven't done that, so I don't know much about that part.)

Thanks for reply. I want the iPhone 5 when it comes out. So would I then put the sim card from the iPhone and put it in my iPad. Buy another sim data plan for iPhone and put new data plan sim In iPhone 5?

Yes, that is correct. The only complication I see if is the iPhone 5 has the mini SIM instead of the micro SIM (which the iPad uses). I think there is a way to cut it down, or have verizon transfer it from the mini sim to a micro sim to put into the iPad, but I haven't been down that road myself.

That would suck if they put mini in!

Tortri: any advice sir?

I've transferred over a 3g unlimited data account and I am trying to transfer that over to a 4g sim card so I can use in my ipad. Tried calling verizon 4 times tonight always getting the same answer "it cannot be activated without it being inside of a 4g device". Any advice on any "magic words" or phrases that can help me to convince them to transfer this account over to this microsim? Thinking I may have to plop down major cash for a phone I don't want http://cdn.macrumors.com/vb/images/smilies/frown.gif.

I did this exactly what you want to do.

Call Verizon and tell them you are going to switch to a 4g phone that requires a microsim. They tell you that you can go to the store but they'll charge you $25 if you do so ask them to send you one which will be free and 2nd day shipped to you. Once you receive it call the 800 number provided in the paperwork and tell the rep you are still choosing your phone but you want to activate the microsim without the phone, he/she will ask for the long 89 number on the card the microsim is attached too and will work so if get a person who says that won't work don't believe them hang up and call again. Afterwards be asked to be transferred to a sales rep as you want to add a line of service, once you do so tell them you activated your sim and getting a new line for your current iPhone as its going to someone else and you are getting a new phone. WHEN YOU DO THIS MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE YOUR TEXT PLAN FOR THE UNLIMITED PLAN AS IT WONT DO ANY GOOD TO PAY FOR IT AND YOU CAN'T USE IT, MORE ON THIS LATER. They'll act confused as your old number isn't showing a phone but still active just ignore them blabbering itll work. You pay a activation fee but doesn't hurt to ask for a waiver of that fee, and a new line of service is $9.99 plus $30 for a 2GB plan. You'll get a new number of course and that's that. You'll have to wait a little while for activation I had to wait an hour but this was when the new iPad was released.

After all that turn off your iPad, insert the microsim, turn it on, go to settings/general/reset/subscribers sevices/ reprovision account. Afterwards it should work. It did take a bit to get it working it'll say LTE and so far it's unlimited.

Now the downside, when you go to verizonwireless.com it'll notice you are on a iPad and if you go to change anything on your plan it'll say you need to upgrade your device which means you can't change anything like I said make sure you got your text plan set, I didn't now I'm paying $5 for almost nothing.

Other than that works great, loving my unlimited iPad LTE. Sure I'm paying the same as a 3GB equivalent plan but I'd rather have unlimited as LTE is broadband speeds and 3Gb is a nights worth of Netflix and web surfing. So far i've used 1GB already and I personally don't think i've used it much.

Enjoy! Msg me if you have any questions.

Your talking to a normal csr, when I got my sim card it had a 800 number to call let me find it I'll post it. I'll have it by tomorrow sometime.

Oops. Didnt realize we were talking about Verizon. I have no idea what Verizon's terms are. I used to have Verizon service but I'm with AT&T now.

Don't mind me...

Funny how quick people are to criticize....Verizon was only the first word in the title....

Probably not open at the moment.

Tell them you have the number off the sim that needs to be activated, if they act stupid tell them you can do it without the phone you had a friend that just did it the other day. Still giving you lip tell them what does it hurt to try? If it works it works if it doesn't then it doesn't.

Customer is always right lol.

Goodluck!

Good to go?

Yep, the magic words were "I have a sim card number I'd like to activate", it took 4 calls but eventually they did it. I'm still wondering if they are training their CSR's to deny this just so people can't put them in the iPad or if it's just a lack of training that they can activate sims without devices. Either way it's good to go now unlimited verizon iPad data! Thanks for the help Tortri!
