I'm not on VZW for phone just iPad. But I did start off with AT&T. I switched the SIMs and switched it and it worked, no changing plans. And since I have the Verizon version now, I can insert the iPhone SIM in the iPad. I have done this and it worked. Popped it out when I was done and then put it back in my phone. I had no issues with my phone, I just restarted it just so it can be in a "better" condition. But, I never had to change any account settings.

when you check your online account, does it just display whatever device is currently using the sim?

I'm not sure what the phone account page looks like since I only have a data only account. However, I'm pretty sure it's the same. When I put the SIM card into the iPad, the picture/device changed from the MiFi to iPad. Switching SIMs does the same thing also.

Yes, Verizon is able to detect what type of device you have the SIM in, and your account management screen will update automatically.. and immediately. As soon as I switched the SIM from my phone to my iPad, the account management screen immediately showed the iPad as having unlimited data. Actually, initially, both the iPad and the phone were both listed on there as an iPad until I had the SIM from the ipad, now in my phone, reprogrammed to have a voice plan with it. But, if you are moving a SIM with a voice plan between the iPad and the phone, it will update which device it is in automatically in the account section.

Hoping someone can help me with my questions!

I have a 4S on an unlimited plan, and iPad is on the post-paid 2gb plan. I am about to be getting a company-paid cell phone, so I don't need to add another line to get voice service. I'll just forward calls to the new phone until everyone has the new number.

My question is around the no changing of plan options. The whole reason I went post-paid is because I wanted the ability for international use - mainly on cruises. I add an international data plan for when I'll be gone, and cancel it when I get back. So I'm assuming that if I just order an LTE microSIM I won't be able to do this? But if I did somehow activate a 4g phone on my line I would be able to do this?

I'm thinking that even if I can't use international data until the new iPhone, I'm much better off switching anyway, and just paying for the ship's unreliable Internet service for the 2 cruises we have before October. Just wanted to confirm what I was thinking so at least I'll know. I think I may be ordering myself a new SIM card today though! Thanks to everyone who's posted in this thread!

Thanks for the reply. If my Verizon account shows the ipad as being the primary device now, does that mean that my phone is currently not tied to any SIM? I've enabled call forwarding, so any calls to the number goes to a different phone. Because of this, I basically have an LTE phone that is not doing anything at the moment. Is the ESN on the LTE phone considered clean now?

Yea......so basically if you have a Verizon 4G LTE unlimited sim card, you can just plug that into your new iPad Verizon 4G LTE and it will work for unlimited data. And the sim card can be swapped back and forth between the 4G LTE iPad/phone without issues?

If this is true, I would love to dedicate one of my unlimited 4G LTE data/phone lines to just the iPad.

Can anyone confirm this?

I did this exactly what you want to do.

Call Verizon and tell them you are going to switch to a 4g phone that requires a microsim. They tell you that you can go to the store but they'll charge you $25 if you do so ask them to send you one which will be free and 2nd day shipped to you. Once you receive it call the 800 number provided in the paperwork and tell the rep you are still choosing your phone but you want to activate the microsim without the phone, he/she will ask for the long 89 number on the card the microsim is attached too and will work so if get a person who says that won't work don't believe them hang up and call again. Afterwards be asked to be transferred to a sales rep as you want to add a line of service, once you do so tell them you activated your sim and getting a new line for your current iPhone as its going to someone else and you are getting a new phone. WHEN YOU DO THIS MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE YOUR TEXT PLAN FOR THE UNLIMITED PLAN AS IT WONT DO ANY GOOD TO PAY FOR IT AND YOU CAN'T USE IT, MORE ON THIS LATER. They'll act confused as your old number isn't showing a phone but still active just ignore them blabbering itll work. You pay a activation fee but doesn't hurt to ask for a waiver of that fee, and a new line of service is $9.99 plus $30 for a 2GB plan. You'll get a new number of course and that's that. You'll have to wait a little while for activation I had to wait an hour but this was when the new iPad was released.

After all that turn off your iPad, insert the microsim, turn it on, go to settings/general/reset/subscribers sevices/ reprovision account. Afterwards it should work. It did take a bit to get it working it'll say LTE and so far it's unlimited.

Now the downside, when you go to verizonwireless.com it'll notice you are on a iPad and if you go to change anything on your plan it'll say you need to upgrade your device which means you can't change anything like I said make sure you got your text plan set, I didn't now I'm paying $5 for almost nothing.

Other than that works great, loving my unlimited iPad LTE. Sure I'm paying the same as a 3GB equivalent plan but I'd rather have unlimited as LTE is broadband speeds and 3Gb is a nights worth of Netflix and web surfing. So far i've used 1GB already and I personally don't think i've used it much.

Enjoy! Msg me if you have any questions.

Yes. Verizon officially supports this. I do it as well. My data contract plan with Verizon is now my iPad after I swapped the SIM from my MiFi hotspot. Verizon online reflects this change in device as well. So, basically I don't have a pre paid plan. The contract data line is now my iPad but I can always switch the SIMs and also keep the pre paid SIM active (by paying monthly $).

Thank you for that!

The CSR's at the Verizon stores swear that swapping in a VZ 4G sim card will not work. I knew they either don't know jack or they're trained to say idiotic things like that. I was even told today that transferring the unlimited data plan from one owner to another would change the unlimited data plan to a 2gb data plan (probably because they manually replace the unlimited with tiered in order to get rid of unlimited data plans). I was able to call Verizon 800 and have it transferred without any problems.

This is the exactly reason I went with a Verizon LTE iPad over the AT&T or wifi only iPad.

If you are a Verizon customer already with an LTE android phone (especially those already with the microsim droid razr and galaxy nexus). It's a no brainer.

I have my galaxy nexus micro sim LTE chip inside my iPad these days. Actually just sold off my galaxy nexus cause the antenna us just horrible on that phone. Loved the phone/ice cream sandwich/screen. But a phone has to be a phone first.

I'll probably try to pick up a cheap Droid Charge or Thunderbolt on Craigslist soon to replace the nexus. (I have a microsim adapter ) so can slide the microsim LTE into any phone.

Wow. Just turned on LTE w/ my Verizon iPad...ridiculously fast. Too bad I have an iPhone on an unlimited plan and I just won't want to give up my unlimited plan.

However...I'm really tempted to just open a new line, get a new number, and transfer my existing unlimited plan to my iPad...

However...why are people saying to sign up with unlimited texting on the switched unlimited data plan (iPhone > iPad data plan)? That's the only thing I'm confused on.

And from what I've read...I'll only end up paying about $40 extra a month for unlimited...right?

EDIT: Also, is there a way to forward calls from the old unlimited number to the new one?

No sure where the unlimited msg on ipad came from that'd be a waste.

As for forwarding straight from their website.

How to Get It
Call Forwarding is an included feature that is typically added to your account when you first activate service. If you wish to confirm

To Activate:

Press *72.
Enter the phone number where you want calls to be forwarded. (e.g. *72-908-123-4567).
Press SEND and wait for confirmation. You should hear a confirmation tone or a message.
Press END.
To Deactivate:
Press *73.
Press SEND and wait for confirmation. You should hear a confirmation tone or a message.
Press END.

As for the price its a little more than $40 because of tax, local tax, fees, etc. Also there will be a activation fee.

I suggest going to their website and searching call forwarding for more info.

This is what I've been wondering, If you move the LTE sim to the ipad from your phone, does that mean that the phone is free now and that the ESN is clean for someone else to activate the phone? I would like to sell my phone now that I have the SIM in my ipad, but I want to make sure that it is completely untied to my account before doing so.

Uh are you on contract? Is that what you're asking?

You are free to sell any device you own whether it's on contract or not.

The only other option i see, if you dont feel like switching sims and you have an android phone.
You can root it and use wifi tether to tether it to the iPad.

I just purchased and awaiting delivery of my new Ipad 3 64 GB with Verizon 4G LTE.

I have my Verizon Iphone 4S on the grandfathered unlimited plan can't I just setup tethering on my phone for $20 bucks a month and then the Ipad will be on the unlimited plan through the phone? Has anyone tried this?

on edit I know I will not have 4G speeds since going through my Iphone but where I live 4G is not available anyway.

While true, they can see the iPad or whatever device it tethered to your rooted phone and if your not paying for the tether... they can legally cancel your contract and you lose the unlimited plan. They cannot however restrict what device you use your LTE sim card in so much better option to move the sim. Not to mention my Droid Razor can easily tether off my iPad that has a free, and legally in terms of the contract and I use Skype to make a call, although I already have an iPhone lol. It's still worth the $81 or $82 a mothe for me to pay for the extra line with unlimited data. I cut my home service to the basic speed and save nearly $45 a month on that as my iPad is my primary device I use in the web.

IMO its worth finding and buying a unlimited plan and phone, eventually when I move my iPhone to Verizon I'll just combine the lines into a family plan and save even more. The speed is incredible on LTE and taking my Internet with me all the time with unlimited data and a free hotspot is worth jumping thru a few hoops.

No they can't. All your doing is turning your device into a router.. This has been myth for the last two years that I have been doing it, and there has not been any evidence to show otherwise.

Nope. Only 2gb allowed when you tether. Only 4G phones have unlimited tethering. iPhones do not since they are 3G.

Using the 3G CDMA network, you are correct. However on LTE it is basically a corporate private network using 10.x.x.x subneting and it IS very traceable. LTE is a very different network setup and yes the phone is a wifi router, but the device hooking up now requests a seperate IP on the network. AT&T has always been able to track this type of usage, Verizon has not until now. They may no do anything unless the bandwidth is excessive, but im playing it safe and moving the sim card which is covered by the FCC regulations put in place on Verizon when they were given access to the 700Mhz spectrum to provide broadband to rural America.

Do I think it's BS they restrict anyone for using data they paid for? YES. Do I want to take a chance they kill my unlimited plan because I'm too lazy to move a sim card and violate my contract on the phone? Nope.

So yes, for the past several years this is a bogus claim, but that has changed as LTE is an entirely new type of network.

Or you can just pay an extra $30 for the unlimited mobile hotspot (if you have a 4G phone w/unlimited data plan of course).

Nope. Only 2gb allowed when you tether. Only 4G phones have unlimited tethering. iPhones do not since they are 3G.

My question is whether they will still offer unlimited 4g tethering when the new iPhone comes out. If so I don't mind waiting until that happens then just pay the extra $30/month and use the iPhone as a hotspot to connect my iPad and whatever else I want to. Although I guess that would mean I should have gotten the WiFi only model instead of the 4g model.

And your point is...?

Here's the answer from Verizon's website.

Can I use my Verizon Wireless 4G SIM in more than one device?

Yes, the Verizon Wireless 4G SIM card contains all of your subscriber information, so the SIM card is portable and can be used in any Verizon Wireless-certified 4G device. All usage will be billed to the account associated with the 4G SIM card.
