I'm so disappointed that AT&T basically determines what gets enabled for all other GSM carriers in the world.

They don't like Mobile Hotspot, so just disable it for AT&Pee and enable it for the rest of the world :D Just like they did with Tethering.

MOBILE HOTSPOT FOR CANADA!

Still no 3G in the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek area from AT&T. Verizon has all of Michigan blanketed in 3G service, so that is something to consider for a lot of people still.

To each their own. But if I'm paying for 3G service I would like to use the service, you know? I can't be on wi-fi 24/7.

Not likely unfortunately, given Tim Cook's 'no comment' response:

Q: Did you change the antenna?
A: Cook: We've optimized things to work on CDMA, but I'm not commenting on anything beyond that.

Even if they didn't fix anything but just made it look like they did it could still turn out that people think that they fixed it. Let me explain:

-the antennagate issue affects iphones only when they are in an area with low signal (or at least thats when its noticeable)
-it could very well be that Verizon has such a good network that even if the antenna wasnt redesigned people still wouldnt notice it (not saying that it is so but just a suggestion)
-it could be that Tim Cook said 'no comment' because Apple didnt actually change anything about the antenna (except change it to work on CDMA networks) and just wants people to think that they did (1. iphone looks like antenna was changed 2. they are very confident it Verizon's network)

-and most importantly the issue was blown completely out of proportion by the media and it doesn't really affect calls as much as everyone was saying it does (its very well possible that if AT&T's network didnt suck as much no one would have noticed it)

No SIM in CDMA? Cool i didn't know!

@Tones2
Oh boy. A 7 month old phone that is not 4G and now can't to voice / data together with an uncertain pricing plan. Yeah - that's tempting
Are you trolling? iPhone 4 is awesome, screen, speed, gps and everything else. It is still the best on the market, even if it wasn't it rocks anyway even after years... so finally verizon users can use iPhone4 and you whine about "7 old phone"?

So can everyone who bought the iPhone 4 with the broken antenna go to the Apple Store and exchange it to this new iPhone 4 with a fixed antenna? :)

And I remember everyone saying few months back "that there won´t be a antenna fix until summer 2011"! I have this to say to them:

HAHAHHAHAHAHAAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!!!! :p

This isnt an antenna fix because the old one works, its probably just a redesign to improve the small issue.

that is all

hotspot is awesome. I've been with AT&T since they were AT&T wireless, (that is, to say, before the cingular merger.) I am not a fan of Verizon, but AT&T needs to add hotspot also or I might actually be tempted to leave.

Honestly, for me, it's not enough to switch from ATT to VZ. I like the hotspot, but don't like no data while on a call. I bet this was actually part of Apple's plan. They don't want people switching from their longtime partner, they want the phone to bring in new blood.

Now the question: Where does the IPhone go from here? What new feature compells me to upgrade my IPhone5 to IPhone6.

I wonder what WWDC will bring to the iPhone, if Apple continues its tradition of updating the iPhone at WWDC. Might see a mini/micro-USB port to comply with EU regulations. If this happens, might be in addition to the dock connector, not a replacement.

While LTE/4G and a combo GSM/CDMA phone will be nice, I'll wait & see. Don't want to get anyone's hopes up.

4.2.5 Hotspots.....looks like a new feature for all of us.

Um, no. This is essentially tethering. Verizon famously uses a hotspot idea instead of direct connection to a computer so this way you can have up to 5 devices off a wifi connection. AT&T offers a direct tethering solution. Hotspot is a Verizon feature, not an iPhone feature. Not to mention this will also be accompanied by extra data costs via Verizon, just as AT&T charges extra for tethering. This is a competitive move by Verizon, not an upgrade by Apple.

So can everyone who bought the iPhone 4 with the broken antenna go to the Apple Store and exchange it to this new iPhone 4 with a fixed antenna? :)

You're not serious. You understand the difference between the two phones, right? I hope you're not serious.

LTE, and thinner

The Cook Reality Distortion Field is weak sauce. Clearly the alteration is from their design flaw in the ATT iPhone 4

So I can't use my BRAND NEW GARMIN APP and be on the phone at the same time....really? I know no voice and data, but im not sure how that works since it may use GPS data and not cellular data. Don't flame me, im asking if there's a difference.

Why is that a new question? GPS apps have been available on Verizon phones for years already.
I simply have problems to believe that people commenting on an Apple news and rumours site have not heard about the simultaneous data/voice issue of Verizon's CDMA/EVDO network. There has been at least one article about this every single month for the last three years here and everywhere else.

It's funny how so many people have been knocking AT&T's network and didn't realize that Verizon's network does not allow you to be on the phone and use data at the same time. And no one really mentions that when comparing Android phones on Verizon to AT&T's iPhone either.

I use that feature quite a few times myself but honestly I would prefer the mobile hotspot if I had a choice so it's not a deal breaker. Hopefully this makes it over to AT&T soon or I can see a lot of people leaving who own laptops and tablets.

It does not disable the phone functionality. If you're using the hotspot and a call comes it, it pauses the data session and delivers the call.

So instead of disabling your phone functionality it will pause (and therefore disable) the internet functionality for you and the 4 other people using your hotspot.

What are the chances of reversing this process so that you force calls to go straight to voicemail as not not disrupt your internet?

Honestly, for me, it's not enough to switch from ATT to VZ. I like the hotspot, but don't like no data while on a call.

I've always felt this was like backwards compatibility in the PS3 or Xbox 360. Everyone says they want it, but only a vocal minority use it.

And for them, AT&T has that option covered.

People who got the AT&T broken antenna iPhone 4, must be pretty pissed right now. Well at least they got a free bumper (which was pile of cr@p).

That guy's an idiot. You don't get redirected to voicemail when you're on a data session and a call comes in. The call pauses the data session and is delivered.

As for Facetime on 3G, I don't know if that's been confirmed or not.

Facetime on 3G for AT&T, if and when AT&T brings that to the iPhone, which they very may well do soon because of the Verizon iPhone.

Facetime on 3G for Verizon, might not be able to simply because most Facetime starts out as a voice call and initiates a data transfer. The call does terminate. But I'm not sure it would be as easy for Verizon to implement if they can at all. AT&T on the other hand everyone says has faster data speeds though less consistent signal strength, so when you are getting a good signal, Facetime would work better over 3G on AT&T than Verizon.

Yeah, that´s right "nothing to see here". The good old jedi mind trick.

Ignorance is bliss.

The "old" antenna does work, ive never had issues with it on my iphone 4.

the "new" one is probably just an improvement to the antennas sensibility or a way to avoid the contact bridging that could cause the issue.

Oh boy. A 7 month old phone that is not 4G and now can't to voice / data together with an uncertain pricing plan. Yeah - that's tempting.

Exactly. Just make sure no one calls you during that 50mb file download (that will now take longer to download under CDMA)....you may have to begin again (and chew up another 50mb on your 150mb plan!).

Now I know why Jobs skipped this event.

Well, I might have gone for it, by CMDA only doesn't appeal to me. I travel internationally, so would want one that handles both. Maybe iPhone 5.

I hear you. Based on the leaked prototypes, I was hoping for a dual/global phone. Some competitors provide this type of configuration. Oh, well. Apple has always been willing to leave market share on the table, rather than reduce their margins or provide a lot of configuration options.

wouldn't personal hotspot disable your phone functionality? You wouldn't be able to make or receive calls, or if you do, it'll disable the hotspot.. very incovenient..

But I could make a phonecall from within a building in midcoast Maine. Suddenly, this phone is VERY convenient!
