Take it as you will... this is a "breaking news" item on wsj.com right now:

Apple is developing a new iPhone to debut this summer and also appears to be working on another model for Verizon Wireless.

Also being reported at Engadget... http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/29/wsj-apple-developing-new-iphone-plus-another-for-verizon/

Apple Inc. is developing a new iPhone to debut this summer and also appears to be working on a model for U.S. mobile phone operator Verizon Wireless, say people briefed on the matter.

While Apple has unveiled a new iPhone every June or July since launching the product in 2007, the new model with CDMA capability, the cellular technology used by Verizon, is notable because Apple and AT&T Inc. have long had an exclusive relationship with the iPhone. That has given AT&T a competitive edge over other carriers including Verizon for the last three years.

The people briefed on the matter said one of the new iPhones is being manufactured by Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which produced Apple's previous iPhones. The model that has CDMA capability, used by Verizon Wireless, is being manufactured by Pegatron Technology Corp., the contract manufacturing subsidiary of Taiwan's ASUSTeK Computer Inc., said these people.

Interesting. Considering a major newspaper is placing this on their front page as a fact and not as speculation is certainly worth considering. Well I guess Apple was starting to get a little worried about all the android news and not enough iphone news so this is definitely an effective way of catching peoples attention.

And just like the endless reports before this one about a Verizon iPhone, it will never come to be and rumors will end up bein the same thing, rumors.

well whatever it is, at this point, I'm actually more excitied for the HTC incredible that will probably be out on Verizon in a few weeks and the Evo coming out on Sprint. Frankly, I'm not that interested in the iPhone as i used to be so I don't really care if it comes out on Verizon or not. The iPhone has lost it's charm for me. That being said, if it does come out, I would definitely consider purchasing it.

Two models for the US doesn't make a lot of sense. As much as anyone I've been skeptical of a CDMA iPhone. Time will tell, I guess. That exclusivity with AT&T will run out someday.

Not anytime soon. With the iPad's launch, Apple made 2 truly revolutionary delas. One, no lock of the device and two the cheap data plans with AT&T. For that deal to pass along with AT&T, Apple had to give up something, say more exclusivity for the iPhone.

Also Verizon's new 'Big Red' ads show an iPhone on par with some other phone. Not a good sign to bash a product you want to sell.

Do they have any more news than just that they're "working on" a CDMA version? Yeah, they're making some. Do they know how many?

I can promise you that they've been "working on" one since 2006, at least. This is the same company that kept an Intel-version of OS X locked up in a lab for years "just in case."

Of course they're working on one. What matters is what they DO with it.

That's reasonable. But I've seen an awful lot of AT&T advertising lately featuring phones other than the iPhone. Which I didn't see much of at all 2007-2009.

Well Verizon may have better service but they screwed me on our phone bill.. How you may ask? $1000 phone bill. I went and paid at the kiosk in the store and they said they never got it, for the previous month which was almost 400 bucks. Yeah screw them, I hope they choke on that iPhone, I dont think they are worthy to have it, not when they screw their customers like that.

I dont have the best service with at&t but at least I have a normal bill every month.

You don't honestly believe that Verizon is the only company capable of royally screwing up a bill do you?

I'd take Verizon over shoddy service any day. That is, after they surgically pry this goddamn iPhone from my hands.

I’m convinced Apple leaks stuff like this to the WSJ to provide leverage for their contract negotiations with AT&T.

Although with Android gaining more operating system share in the smartphone space, Apple may be ready to launch an all out assault. I do lend more credence to a Verizon iPhone this year than in the years past.

There's no doubt that Apple is developing a CDMA version. They have to. They need to have that bullet ready in case at&t steps out of line.

Now will it be released? I doubt it. But I wouldn't mind all the whiners leaving at&t and crashing another network.

Verizon iPhone in the Works?

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is working on two new iPhone models, one of which will be compatible with Verizon's CDMA network, for release this year.

According to the article, the two iPhone models will be produced by different manufacturers:

The people briefed on the matter said one of the new iPhones is being manufactured by Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which produced Apple's previous iPhones. The model that has CDMA capability, used by Verizon Wireless, is being manufactured by Pegatron Technology Corp., the contract manufacturing subsidiary of Taiwan's ASUSTeK Computer Inc., said these people.

The new GSM version would be released this summer while the CDMA model for Verizon would not go into production until September.

There has been much speculation about how much longer the iPhone will remain exclusively with AT&T in the U.S. A report earlier this year indicated that the exclusivity deal would end in 2010 and that AT&T was seeking to extend it.

Verizon is the largest cellular service provider in the U.S. with over 91 million subscribers. Reports earlier this year indicated that Verizon was in talks with Apple to gain access to the iPhone and the iPad, though no official news resulted. Verizon also purportedly claimed that its network is already ready for the iPhone and the associated network traffic it would bring.

Update 2 from Engadget......

Update 2: Soon after the news broke, we were informed that the next-generation iPhone would be announced on June 22nd (a Tuesday, naturally) and would be dubbed the iPhone HD (a name that has been tossed around before). That certainly makes sense given that Apple almost certainly has to up the pixel count in order to rival the EVO 4G, HD2 and all of those other high-res handsets, but we're still reserving judgment until we see that fateful media invite hit our inbox.

Wouldn't a CDMA phone not be able to talk and use data at the same time?

If a verizon iphone is released, I hope they at least offer some kind of a deal for those switching from the droid to iphone.

This is pretty funny. I can remember so many people on these forums saying the iPhone would NEVER come to Verizon. Man are they eating their words right now. :p
