Haha I know!!!! For better or worse, my family and all my friends are on Verizon so I'll be on Verizon's network for a long, long time. I've been patiently waiting for this announcement, and I couldn't believe how vehemently so many of the people on here bashed Verizon.

I don't even understand why, it's not like the iPhone coming to Verizon makes the one in your pocket any better or worse, it just means more of us are happy! I would never want anybody to not have access to a product that they like! Anyway, woohoo! I can't wait haha. I was going to buy some kind of Android phone when my contract was up but now I'm waiting for the iPhone!

Some people have to justify buying a phone on a carrier they didn't want by convincing themselves that the other carriers all suck. That way they feel better about their purchase. Basic human psychology. Most of those people will be dumping Atnt and getting a Verizon iPhone.

I was planning on getting the Nexus One once it came to Verizon...but this sounds like a good enough reason to wait a few months.

I don't know anything about the technology, but I don't see why not? Or is it like AT&T vs. Tmobile 3G?
CDMA = talk or data but not at the same time. Phones are programmed to a specific network at the factor. There is no such thing as an unlocked CDMA phone. CDMA is used in the US on Verizon and Sprint, the legacy (old) network for Bell and Telus in Canada and on some smaller budget carriers in other parts of the world.

GSM = talk and data at the same time. Phones can be manufactured as not locked into a specific carrier or as locked to a specific carrier. In either case, all GSM phones use SIM cards which can be swapped into other GSM phones as long that phone is not locked to a different carrier. GSM is used all over the world and has become the standard in most of Canada now which used to be split like the US is between GSM and CDMA carriers. AT&T and T-Mobile in the US are both GSM but T-Mobile uses strange 1700 Hz frequency for their 3G service making phones specific to their service not work on AT&T or visa versa.

HSPA/UMTS = 3G GSM. It uses a standard called WCDMA for the radio interface which is not to be confused with CDMA (CDMA2000). It uses SIM cards like earlier GSM standards like Edge.

LTE = Long Term Evolution is the 4th generation standard for GSM technology and it is based on HSPA/UMTS.

SIM = Subscriber Information Module. It is a small card that stores your identity including your phone number on the cellular network. Some phones also use it to store a small contact list.

The iPhone 3G/3GS work on both Edge (2G) and HSPA/UMTS (3G) networks it does not work with CDMA2000 networks.

I would say it is more likely Apple is working on 4g technology now and will carry on with AT&T until the LTE rollout on VZW is up to scratch. Then you might see an iPhone on Verizon.

I agree with you. When verizon gets LTE to the masses, an iphone for verizon is much more likely to come out. plus, since att will be going to LTE also, there might be less to change for each version of the phone.

I've been with AT&T/Cingular/AT&T since 1999, so i doubt I would switch, but this would bring more competition to the table. Verizon would want switchers, so they would sweeten their deals....AT&T would want to keep current and attract new customers, so they would sweeten their deals... at least I hope.

True, time will tell. In the world of droid, nexus, pre, and storm, i hope that :apple: really sends out a kick ass phone with a greatly refreshed OS. it's year 4 and face hasn't changed much... we need awesome features and a new look. When the 3G came out, everyone knew you had a 3G. When the 3Gs was released, no one knew the difference if you were just holding it. This new one needs to be a new form and look, so that we can be special again!!!!

This is pretty funny. I can remember so many people on these forums saying the iPhone would NEVER come to Verizon. Man are they eating their words right now. :p

Ummm, how are we/they eating our words? Is this an official announcement? Doesn't look it to me, looks like every other VZW/iPhone article ever....until I see Steve-O-Jobs saying guess what we're on Verizon now, then I'll believe it....but your statement is retarded considering this isn't an announcement and no one as of yet has to eat any words....

Unlocked...Sprint? That would be even better.

CDMA - Sprint please!

As far as I'm aware, Sprint won't activate non-Sprint devices. It'll therefore require a deal between Apple and Sprint.

Sprint supposedly has a big employe conference scheduled tomorrow for some big announcement... just saying is all. I would be first in line for a Sprint iPhone.

This is untrue. You can use CDMA phones from one network on another, with the proper software unlocking. This happens all the time with Sprint branded handsets being used on TDSMetro, for example.

I assume that they would make it a "4G" capable device, so you would have talk and data on 4G, or when on wifi, but not with CDMA 3G service.

Here's to hoping!

iPhone HD Tuesday June 22nd, OMFG I CANT WAIT !!! and if the Verizon rumor is true than I'll get that one because I'm already on Verizon soo yeahh :D

You don't honestly believe that Verizon is the only company capable of royally screwing up a bill do you?

I'd take Verizon over shoddy service any day. That is, after they surgically pry this goddamn iPhone from my hands.

Valid point. However, my oldest son and I have iPhones on at&t. The Wife and younger son have Verizon. Wife won't come to at&t due to reception, and so on..... However, at&t's billing is seamless compared to Verizon by a mile. Looking at the Verizon Family Plan Bill each month is like having ones finger nails removed slowly.

I'll get her over this fall, and make the little one pay as they go. (oldest gets college subsidy from parents for 4 years).

Yup agreed, more than likely just a software tweak, as quite a number of LTE chipsets are going to support GSM/UMTS and CDMA2000

i was watching fast times or something on msnbc or something but they were talking about apple and had the guy from wsj on the phone and he was explaining it and what info he had.. the two points i got from him which i did not like is that there working on a cdma version for verizon which will be very similar to the 3gs xcept an even faster processor and the new iphone will be like the "nano" version of the the 3gs which is complete ********.. i dont want a smaller screen.. thats not revelutionary at all.. if this is true than **** apple i'll go get a ****ing android phone.. the new 4g evo with its 4.3' screen and front facing camera.. **** apple if thats the case

Nonono

Don't encourage the non GSM providers. That is like feeding the trolls.

Well, if you have to do it at least make it all in one device. Don't splinter the iphone into two types....

Well, I have waited forever for AT&T to rollout their Microcell so that I could get coverage at my house. If there is even a thought of a Verizon iPhone coming out this fall, I'll wait for that instead. 5 bars of Verizon goodness everywhere I go.

Yeah, opening the iPhone to all carriers would be a good move.
It opens the phone to a much larger range of customers,
which means more sales and more publicity of people using it.
What benefits does Apple get from staying exclusive with AT&T?
Do they make profits from the plans themselves or something?
I'd imagine Apple gets the profits from the phones being sold themselves.
At least the majority of it.
If anybody in America, no matter what carrier (aside Cricket and such) had access to the iPhone, that would be a ton more sales.
Apple's a product company, you would think they would want their product to be available to the biggest market possible.

June 28th ya mean :) WWDC starts then.. not 22nd

I was referring to the latest update on engadget:

Update 2: Soon after the news broke, we were informed that the next-generation iPhone would be announced on June 22nd (a Tuesday, naturally) and would be dubbed the iPhone HD (a name that has been tossed around before).

Yes I read engadget.. the logic makes no sense
