That's reasonable. But I've seen an awful lot of AT&T advertising lately featuring phones other than the iPhone. Which I didn't see much of at all 2007-2009.

that would be what as known as smart spending of advertising dollars. when you have a product locked in with another party and that party is spending a ton of money advertising it, you spend your money advertising your other products.

I agree with you. When verizon gets LTE to the masses, an iphone for verizon is much more likely to come out. plus, since att will be going to LTE also, there might be less to change for each version of the phone.

This might be a weird time to make a CDMA phone, unless the China market is a MAJOR motivating factor. Verizon is launching LTE this year. They have it up and running (for testing) in Boston and Seattle right now. I think they said 30 markets by the end of 2010, and "full coverage" of the US by 2014.

That would mean at least 3 years and probably 5. LTE still seems to be fighting over the voice spec and will probably be mainly for data for a while. Oh well

Ok, but then again how long till CDMA is shut down? Quite a while....
Any phone you buy in the next year will *probably* be replaced before Verizon's CDMA is shut down.

I’m convinced Apple leaks stuff like this to the WSJ to provide leverage for their contract negotiations with AT&T.

And give those planning to rush out and get a Nexus One on Verizon a reason to hold back until summer to see what Apple will bring...

Yes. Apple revises the iPhone hardware annually anyway. To bring out a CDMA iPhone for two, maybe three years and have the opportunity to capture part of their 90 million customers would certainly be cost effective. For Verizon's part, using the iPhone to improve their 23% share of the smart phone market is likewise a no-brainer.

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm still in the camp that believes AT&T did not give apple that no contract data plan for $30 without some concessions. Thy would be a fool.

Apple/Steve has a long vindictive memory and I bet they won't do business with a company that turned them down and now a days carries on bashing their product with their latest ad campaign.

You are way too stuck on Verizon turning down Apple before the iPhone even existed. :)

Open your eyes to the present, where Jobs is instead out to stop Google and Android.

Read this article for some ideas of what could happen if Verizon got the iPhone.

Steve would love it all.

Guess we won't see any more of those "Can your network and your phone do that?" commercials.

Will be interesting seeing a gimped iPhone. Where I live I have no problems with AT&T and would never switch to Verizon, or go from what I have now to a gimped phone.

Why is it gimped if it uses the new qualcomm chips? I think apple engineers are capable enough to use new technology.

there is no multi-tasking in the ipad which reduces network traffic along with the fact that most apps are crippled compared to what you can do with a netbook. along with AT&T not having to sell it, market it, support it, etc.

Absolutely. And in the current climate of even minimal traction from Droid/Nexus1, "leaking" news of a Verizon iPhone puts a big fly in Google's orange juice.

On AT&T I can be on a phone call and use the internet at the same time, can't do that with Verizon.

I have a Verizon smart phone now, have never missed that particular feature. I suspect that would be seen as a small price to pay for many who have to, or want to, use Verizon instead of AT&T.

Qualcomm said last Nov that they could and that mass supplies of the chips would be available the middle of this year. They reiterated that a couple months ago. Once the svdo spec was approved, they started working on it.

If Verizon gets the iphone, I have no doubt this will invoke some pricing wars between the two carriers - or at the very least, AT&T will deploy some retention department and some amazing incentives to prevent customers from switching over to Verizon.

It's going to be amazing to see how many AT&T customers make the switch. I will definitely be one of them, I have no signal in my apartment... Which just isn't going to work for me, so please Verizon, hurry up and get the iPhone! I can't stand the DROID or any of their other phones.

I've used the feature often so for me it'd make a big deal, add to the fact that I get better coverage from AT&T for where I need to be so switching would be unthinkable for me.

It's not the chip, but the network that needs to be upgraded. Verizon hasn't done this, seems that they're more focused on LTE.

I'm sure Apple will be fine with that. Their goal isn't going to be to try to get people to switch away from AT&T, but to try to get some of Verizon's 91 million customers to buy an iPhone. And it works out great for Verizon too, since they reportedly only have about 26% of the smartphone market.

Makes sense. Always take care of your needs.

For a CDMA handset to use SVDO (simultaneous voice and 3G) chips, no network modification is required.

You might be thinking of 1X Advanced, which greatly increases users and speed, and does require network changes.

I hope not! Go AT&T!

Why? I don't understand comments like this; your AT&T devices won't suddenly stop working just because Apple releases a Verizon device. If anything, it may perform a little better if heavy users leave the AT&T network.

Also, a few people have mentioned LTE. I thought I read somewhere that early speed tests weren't too good; does anyone have any speed test documentation somewhere?

I posted this on the Howard Forums a while back...

If Apple really wants to own the wireless industry...
4th Gen iPhone will be sold non-exclusive to any carrier....

It will have:
Quadband GSM
Quadband HSDPA (850/1900/2100/1700AWS)
Dual Band CDMA 1xEV-DO rev. A (850/1900)
(TRUE WORLD PHONE... oh... and it is definitely possible... many Blackberries ... including the Storm support all of these modes.... except AWS 1700)

You should be able to buy it from any of the major carriers... for the same price... but maybe 1 carrier can strike a deal to be the exclusive carrier advertised and sold with iPhone at Apple stores (AT&T and Verizon would likely fight for this deal).

Sprint would be the clear winner when it comes to plan pricing... $99 Everything Plans are cheaper than all others.

Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T all already have a Visual Voicemail service in place.

Apple would be the clear winner... selling more iPhones than ever... which also make APP sales go through the roof.

Steve Jobs.... are you reading this?

A world phone as defined by the US market. There are serious technical issues with supporting that CDMA/GSM combo. Can it be done? Yes. But what are the costs and benefits?

The argument is that Apple could 'own' the market. Not going to happen, because they already own the market. Specifically they own the segment of the market they wanted to own. Apple isn't obsessed with world domination (difficult to measure) to the same extent some of the people on Macrumors are.

Expect the eventual Verizon support to be in the form of an LTE phone which is a world standard. Not a CDMA or WiMax phone. Of course the downside is that with the current LTE 4G deployments require two devices since there hasn't been a combined GSM/UMTS/LTE chipset. So you carry a 3G and 4G device to get coverage.
