No sprint??? :(

Yeah, Sprint is a CDMA carrier also, isn't it? Couldn't they just as easily use this CDMA iPhone? (oh, please, oh please, oh please, oh please!!!!)

I've never ever had a problem with Sprint service, and have loyally stuck by them ever since the iPhone release years ago, as I had absolutely no desire to go to lousy AT&T, and don't regret at all never having done so. I feel the same about Verizon... I'm loyal to Apple, but they are not the only people/company out there... I hope to one day have their phone on my carrier... why they just don't open up their phones to everybody now, now that they have both compatible version of phones available... I don't understand, their profits would go through the freakin' roof! Come on Apple and revolutionize the way wireless phone companies do business!

A WiFi hotspot sounds good until you have to disconnect to make or receive a call. No thanks!

The ability to MAKE a phone call and not have your call drop every 3 seconds is far more important than simultaneous voice/data. Start with the basics.

So the mobile hotspot is free, or are people assuming that it is free? I have handylight and I have hardly ever used it. It is nice to have the option to tether, but I never found myself in a situation where I needed to tether any device to my cellular.

People are assuming its free. It's an additional $20 / month plus the data plan for other smartphones on Verizon, I don't see why the iPhone would be any different.

I do understand about the speed and the triangulation, but how about accuracy? Is the sat more accurate or it isn't?

Think of it this way:

The GPS chip is more accurate, but as far as it knows it could be anywhere on the planet. So if you used only the GPS chip to find a location, it could take a long time, as it has to "look" for GPS satellites that could be anywhere. Once it finds you, though, it can tell very specifically where you are.

Cell triangulation works by seeing which towers you're connected to and telling the GPS chip "Hey, I know for sure that we're within this 500-meter (or whatever) circle!" Then the GPS only has to look for satellites that it knows would be visible from within that circle, rather than considering the possibility that you might be in Botswana or Antarctica when it first tries to lock on.

This is quite oversimplified and I'm sure gets a lot of the underlying technology concepts wrong, but at least you can get a model for how it works.

Just amazing.

1 - Same questions get asked over and over.

2 - How many times do people have to say "I told you so about Verizon and iphone". Get over it.

3 - CDMA radio inside the phone - and people want to use it somewhere without CDMA. Think people, think.

4 - Statement of the day - "AT&T is only in it for the money". Do you think they are in this for some feel good reason? Of course they are in it for the money. Duh!

The agony of all of this is amazing.

Momma always said, "Stupid is as stupid does." The stupid ones just like to exercise their pie holes, like me for instance.:p

I am also paying $30 for data on my iPad. One year of that service is $360. So, the big issue for me is, can I live with no data when I am on the phone....

but you don't even know what the pricing will be on verizon. look at how AT&T did the unlimited data when the iphone was announced and a few years later the unlimited part is gone. Verizon could do the exact same thing.

if AT&T allowed tethering with unlimited data which they may do now based on verizon's announcement, you wouldn't need to leave AT&T

No, I'm not off at all.
The iPhone does not support HSPA+... period.
It is uses HSDPA/UMTS, not HSPA+.
Correct.

The current iPhone does not have a HSPA+ radio. iPhone 4 owners get HSPA speeds, regardless of whether or not there's an active HSPA+ network in their area (like much of the world).

When AT&T turns on HSPA+ in a couple of months, their iPhone 4 subscribers will not see any difference.

My guess is that Apple will put an HSPA+ radio in the iPhone 5 this summer, now that HSPA+ network upgrades have been well established over much of this planet.

Other things I'm sick of hearing about the iPhone...

I'm sick of hearing about the use internationally. I know this is big for business but the iPhone has transcended to more than just business users. Matter of fact, it grew DESPITE business users in the early days who lived on crackberry. This is at best a SMALL factor when deciding if you get an iPhone for the MAJORITY of cell phone users.

I am preempting the complainers who buy an iPhone now and then in 4 months when a new one is announced are upset how "unfair" it is they just bought an iPhone 4 months ago and it doesn't have the new features! Well no kidding! here is a hint:

IF you are new to the iPhone and Apple - they normally update in June each year. Either buy now and be happy or have some patience and wait until June to see IF a new one is brought out. That might also mean waiting until August or Sept to actually get one. You've been warned!

I don't disagree, I think we are all waiting to see what the pricing is, ATT also grandfathered everyone in. I am kind of hoping ATT does start giving unlimted data with free hot spot, but I don't see it happending. I have no issues with ATT where I live, but when I go see my family in Florida, that is where I have an issue with ATT service.

People are assuming its free. It's an additional $20 / month plus the data plan for other smartphones on Verizon, I don't see why the iPhone would be any different.

That's the same price as the tethering option from AT&T except it's not over wifi, only usb and bluetooth to one device.

People are assuming. Most likely it will be $20/month.

If you read the SVDO spec, the network is fine but it's up to the handset maker to implement. That would put the ball in apple's court. It's apple not allowing it if I read the spec correctly. I guess you can say apple crippled the phone.

It may have required too much space or re-engineering of the internals to implement in a way that made Apple happy. Not knowing the details, I don't blame them too much.

<snip> a useless device as expected CDMA cannot be used at the same time for internet and voice what useless device!!!

Hardly usesless...especially for those with lousy AT&T coverage. Pathetic would be a good description of your post.

Yeah, Sprint is a CDMA carrier also, isn't it? Couldn't they just as easily use this CDMA iPhone? (oh, please, oh please, oh please, oh please!!!!)

The trick will be getting Sprint to add the phone to their database.

I'll bet Sprint is working on an iPhone already. Perhaps trying to get Apple to put in WiMax (yuk!).

For all of you who complain that the Verizon iPhone or AT&T iPhone doesn't meet your needs... I have great news for you. There are TONS of phones out there for you to buy. Many of them probably do exactly what you're looking for. Oh, sorry...they might not be made by Apple though. Deal breaker? :/

Now, call me crazy, but Verizon stated that they were testing for quite a while with "thousands of them". How could they go unnoticed?

My idea: That video we saw that had the correct CDMA antenna with a micro-sim slot were the test units. They for the most part look the same as the ATT to the average persion. If the Micro-sim slot was missing, someone could instantly jump to conclusions and say its a CDMA phone. A quick software change to display "AT&T" instead of Verizon ,and its identical to what everyone else has (for the most part).

It avoids the famous bar scenario.

Anyone agree?

because in a few months VZ is going to have phones that do 30Mbps of data throughput. the verizon iphone will do 1 or so. this is like offering free in network voice minutes after the voice network matured

if they can convert some of their ADSL customers to iphone customers it's a huge cost savings for them with the same speed being sold. they can probable even steal some sprint customers

yeah and the big thing is going to be price. i have look at their plans in the past and it would cost more for me to switch over with 2 phones with data.

also, not sure how it would work when i receive text over data via google voice. i receive texts all the time while i'm talking on the phone. verizon would cut those all out

Thanks for no thanks

No voice and data simultaneously no thanks.

Jailbreak does anything you want on AT&T. I am also grandfathered in to the unlimited plan.

You know how many times I'm on hold with pseg for example for an hour and I'm searching the Internet, downloading apps etc...

Or on the phone with my wife finding her the Address and number to a buisness.

Data and voice simultaneously is one of the best features that I personally love.

The one great thing is that brings competition. And competition is always Good.

I'll eat my words on Apple never producing a CDMA phone but that is a nightmare

this basically makes the iOS notification system useless. You will get flooded with notifications each time you get off the phone.

I'm not sure I would ever want to trade that off, along with Verizon upping their upgrade limit from 12 mo to 20.

Who makes voice calls anymore? That's so quaint. ;) And don't even get me started about the horrible inefficiency of voice mail.

But I agree: the whole iOS notification system needs a serious overhaul: queuing, review, calendar integration, whatever.

The problem with that is someone would've noticed the redesigned antenna. I would guess they just put a case on it and no one was the wiser.

Yes, they did!

But :apple: also listened to their,,,constituents (lol),,,,buyers,,board of directors, basically thousands of complaints and put a dollar figure to it and approved.

I do applaud :apple: for meeting the public demand with Verizon.

Good customer service goes to :apple: once again! Even if it's star product walks with a limp on certain networks for a little while.
