Blimey, you pay a lot for your phone plans in the US.

 I paid about the same upfront but pay half that a month for a similar deal. That was a month after the 4 came out, prices have come down a little since then.

Makes me feel better about Mac prices in the UK. :D

I find surprising how some people were expecting a significant difference with verizon, when virtually they have the same plans in everything else, why should things be different with the Iphone?

Is about time to realize that the communication business in America is not about competition... at least not between companies, if something is between customers versus companies, we (customers) are just trying not to too scwed, that's why so many use MyWi and such, them (the companies) have each other.

Wow those plans are expensive in the US. Sure I paid a lot for the phone without a plan but I only pay $15 for 200 minutes or text and unlimited 3G data. I don't need any more minutes or text messages when using Viber and What's App a lot.

Suddenly £35 a month for an Ip4 with 5000 texts, 2000 minutes and unlimited data sounds a lot better compared to these!

which carrier?

most of the european carriers i've seen have data plans around 500MB

From what I have read EU carriers seem to be moving to something like what we have here. O2 for example is suppose to be removing Unlimited usage and implementing tariff.

I guess if you like watching netflix all day on the iphone you use up to much bandwidth. All this cool tech and its only marginal better than the old days. Oh well it was nice while it lasted. Back to WiFi. :(

No Surprise

On par with current Verizon offerings. Wasn't expecting them to up and change it all like eccrine was thinking they might.

Three (UK operator) one current deal they have-

£69 upfront for 16Gb iPhone 4 (~$110), £35/month (~$55) for 24 months-

2000 mins
5000 texts
5000 3-to-3 mins (ie same network)
Unlimited data

Hmmm. I have AT&T but not a smart phone of iPhone yet and my 2 year contract is about up. I was hoping for competitive rates from Verizon but I don't see it at all. I think I'll stick with my AT&T plan when I get a iPhone especially since they offer rollover minutes.

Isn't competition supposed to favor the consumer? I'm just not seeing that right now. :(

No... You can preorder Feb. 3rd if you are already a customer and if not you can buy it Feb. 10th, as stated many times in previous MR articles..

I know about those dates. From MR's screen shots it looked like you could go threw the process of selecting plans to purchase. That's why I asked.

Yeah in Europe we get screwed with every Mac we buy, getting a conversion rate of $ to € that's almost one to one .

At least the iPhone is 'cheap' for us. Seems like European carriers are in a more fierce competition then the US carriers are.

Why would oligopoly compete? It would make no sense to them. Just make more money so it does not hurt as much. :D

or if you're REALLY smart, make enough money doing what you love and find ways not to get financially pillaged by these companies. For me, it's jailbreaking and tethering for free unlimited data :D and with my company discount I only pay $65/mo after taxes

Guess I won't be saving much (if at all) if I switch my family to iPhones. The real question I have.. is the antenna in the iPhone better/same/worse than the antenna in my Blackberry Tour? I have to rely on tethering my BB for 'broadband* internet' and hate to think switching to the iPhone would be worse.

*: I use the term 'broadband' as absolutely loosely as possible.

I have to disagree. The cost of my iPhone plan on AT&T has done nothing but go down over the past years. Along with the costs of any cell phone plan.

The funny thing is, many of the complainers here all want 4G no matter where they go, but think all this build out to support their need to surf on the go is free and takes no investment by the phone companies. But of course, it's the same crowd that thinks any company that tries to make a profit is just plain evil too.

Yes, it's expensive, but history has shown it continues to come down in price as each of them try to stay competitive with the other. But, keep in mind, all the bells and whistles we want here in the US don't come cheap either. It cost real money to add towers and implement 4G networks.

You could go through the process earlier today (maybe not as far as checkout, but you could select phone and plans), but it was obviously a mistake on Apple's part - they removed the pages.

Wow, you yanks are bent over.

I paid $600 for my iPhone 4 unlocked on launch day, then I pay (vodafone) $20 a month for 1200 minutes 3000 texts and 1gb of data a month.

So the cost of my iPhone is (for a year) $840

You're all a bit supid over there

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

You'd think Verizon would have taken this chance to compete and severely undercut AT&T.

But nooooo.

I suddenly don't feel so bad about buying an AT&T iPhone in November. My current plan (including tethering) would actually cost MORE under Verizon. Fools!

I totally agree, personally I think they(Telecoms) are all in it together. I mean they absolutely don't care about us as customers. Who in their right mind would have passed up the opportunity to not just hurt, but destroy the competition by offering deals that would be sure to entice? These deals are poor at best, and I'm lost, which only leads me to believe that they (verizion & At&t) made a deal together. Makes no sense! Had it of been me, I would have undercut At&t, to where it would actually make sense to switch, or see if what the competition was made of. Can they compete with my network, and ability to give great prices! A bad day for competition today...

Way too expensive

Makes me wonder what kind of back door deals are going on among carriers in the US.

Weird

I clicked on the 16GB link in the news about the Verizon plans and it took me to the apple website. It asked if I was an existing Verizon wireless customer and if I wanted to upgrade from an existing phone. Then I entered in my information, cell phone number, billing zip code, last four of social, and password. Then it took me through what plan I wanted voice, data, and messaging. But after I submitted the messaging option it took forever to load and then popped up some weird message.

I contacted Apple and they acted like they didn't have a clue. Strange that you could get all the way through the package and then it not complete.

would have been nice to give us consumers more a price break
now we need other carriers on board to get more price and performance competition going
