Yes, US carriers compete on phone exclusitivity and technology rather than price. They roll out huge expensive networks, charge you an arm and a leg for it, and then shortly after, the price of the network goes way down, but not your monthly bill.

I have to disagree. The cost of my iPhone plan on AT&T has done nothing but go down over the past years. Along with the costs of any cell phone plan.

The funny thing is, many of the complainers here all want 4G no matter where they go, but think all this build out to support their need to surf on the go is free and takes no investment by the phone companies. But of course, it's the same crowd that thinks any company that tries to make a profit is just plain evil too.

Yes, it's expensive, but history has shown it continues to come down in price as each of them try to stay competitive with the other. But, keep in mind, all the bells and whistles we want here in the US don't come cheap either. It cost real money to add towers and implement 4G networks.

I see your point, I believe part of what happened with the new/old Verizon Iphone, was the unrealistic expectations we get every time apple is ready to get a new product in the market, look at everything that some are expecting from the IPad 2, at the end, we get only a gradual improvement... if not a step backwards (I still can get over the firewire issue with MacBooks).

Agreed! Who cares! Other than the fact that people have too much money to spend on all this data, hotspot and texting. $100 plus per person for a mobile phone.

$100 a person? That would only be if you were going BY YOURSELF! If you are part of a family plan... it's not $100 a person. Just wanted to clarify.

So what you guys saw on Apple.com is just for regular ordering starting on the 10th, right? I thought the 2/3 preordering was only at Verizon.com?

Also, so does this mean those of us who want to buy the phone at full retail price will not be able to order online? I know AT&T and Apple both require you to visit a store if you want the AT&T iPhone at full retail, so I guess it's safe to assume it will work the same way with Verizon. In that case, we'll have to wait in the mob lines on the 10th to get a full retail phone, eh?

And I guess this pretty much confirms no 1-year contract pricing, unless Verizon offers it themselves...

Wow, you yanks are bent over.

I paid $600 for my iPhone 4 unlocked on launch day, then I pay (vodafone) $20 a month for 1200 minutes 3000 texts and 1gb of data a month.

So the cost of my iPhone is (for a year) $840

You're all a bit supid over there

Most Americans are ignorant of what they pay. But for those of us who do know better, where do you suppose we go? The carriers don't compete, it is what it is.

For those not on verizon, I pay ~$200 a month for 2 Blackberry Tours (one enterprise data plan, one regular data plan), 1400 minutes, 500 texts, and tethering capability. That is WITH a discount I get through my employer.

Do I pay too much? Hell yes I do.

holy hell you yanks get ripped off!

i pay what, £24 a month which is roughly $39? what do i get?

600 mins
unlimited texts
unlimited data

suckers!

Do you have monthly contracts sim only there?

I have a month to month contract, that's 1200 mins, 3000 texts and 1gb of data for $20 a month.

Do you have something like that?

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

You'd think Verizon would have taken this chance to compete and severely undercut AT&T.

But nooooo.

I suddenly don't feel so bad about buying an AT&T iPhone in November. My current plan (including tethering) would actually cost MORE under Verizon. Fools!

I don't see why they would. Here in the UK, Orange and Vodafone did exactly the same as Verizon are. They put out contracts that were either the same price or about £0.05 cheaper!!

Et tu Brute?

Just cracks me up how Verizon's pricing is no better than AT&T's. But everyone just couldn't wait for angelic Verizon to get the iPhone, and "give it all away".

ha, ha

Wow! It does seem expensive compared to over here. You start with a basic voice plan for $40, then you have to add data for $30, and then another $5 for the basic messaging tariff! Thats $75 = £45. OK, so the iPhone is slightly cheaper (but not by that much), but our iPhones are unlocked (even if you buy it on a carrier, they often unlock it after your first contract period is over).

I suppose here we have much more competition compared to just 2 carriers. I'm just surprised that it costs so much even for the 'cheapest' tariff

T-Mobile offers slight discounts for non-contract phones, which is similar to Sim-Only except there are very few phones that come unlocked in the U.S. None of the majors ones do, iPhone included. The only other Sim-Only network that you can use is an MVNO that runs off T-Mobile's network called Simple Mobile. $60 unlimited everything. Unfortunately, T-Mobile is pathetic and is only an option for those who live in cities. As far as AT&T goes, your pretty much out of luck as far as getting any discount. Sprint and Verizon are CDMA networks, so all of their phones are locked to them, and even though you technically can unlock CDMA phones, Sprint and Verizon will not activate each other's phones. Sprint has some great prepaid options, such as Virgin Mobile's $25 a month for 300 mins, Unlimited Texts and Web. But your locked to their phones, which currently tops out at an LG Optimus.

Et troll, Brute?

"Everyone" couldn't wait for Verizon to get the iPhone for their superior coverage, not because we expected them to give it away.

Yes America, you are getting ripped off.

I lived in Paris in 2008-2009 and I was not only able to get the iPhone 3G on a 2 year cheaper than the US was selling at the time (€99 vs $199) but my monthly bill was ~€38 per month which included unlimited text, unlimited data. I only had about 120 minutes but remember that in Europe all incoming calls are free, I did not need any more than that. And the carrier unlocked my phone with no hassles when I returned to the US. Unfortunately I had to sell it as I had Verizon in the US...

We don't demand change. We allow the rip off to continue without much complaining. 20 cents for each text, and $20 for unlimited text has been going on for years across most carriers when it is known it costs them a fraction of a cent for each one. And you thought they were raking in the bucks with the outrageous data charges? It's texts they make a killing on.

So keep electing politicians in the pockets of the wireless companies and deregulation fanatics America! Soon $100 a month will seem cheap in comparison to what they'll force us to pay once 4G starts going online.

Its called government sanctioned monopoly. Check out our cable specials.

Lets not get started on health care, glad I am not that 50% plus percent of the population that has non :D

Still much easier to take money from the populous here. Oh how I love American Hillbillies.

Exactly right. The wireless companies pay bribes to the FCC (in the form of wireless spectrum auctions) and in return, they get to fix prices with each other & lock their phones, all in the name of "competition". This isn't unexpected, although a lost opportunity Verizon's part. Looks like I'll be sticking with AT&T after all.

It is going to be difficult to switch off of Sprint only to pay so much more. Damn. I wanted an :apple: iPhone with coverage, even if it was only 3G.

Don't worry. They more than make up for it with their ridiculously cheap gas and generally EVERYTHING else being cheaper than the UK as well. So funny to see all these Europeans come out of the woodwork to laugh at Americans for high prices.

Text messaging is so utterly ridiculous if you have a smartphone

Only if all of your friends have a smartphone as well.

Also I prefer to keep the two types of communication separate. I would like to be alerted every time I get a text. I do not want to be alerted whenever I get an email.
