You are right... no talk and surf is a limitation of CDMA which Verizon is looking to rectify when it introduces LTE.

There was an article a few months back that Verizon IS looking to fix this with CDMA. There is new tower technology available that will allow it with no phone upgrades required.

/me goes to look for the link

jessicak0, where have you read that verizon is going to allow voice/data on CDMA? I knew this was something that would be able to be done on LTE, but not CDMA. If they do that would be way cool. Coming from att its gonna take a little adjustment for me to not be able to do that, but the idea of making a call and finishing it without it dropping is worth more! :)

They announced it at the verizon iphone announcement on 1/11/11.

Incorrect, CDMA is capable of simultaneous data & voice (SVDO). However, it requires some upgrades to CDMA2000 1X networks, which VZW has not implemented as of yet.

You guys are right, I remember reading that article. I can't see Verizon looking to invest in that. They already got the iPhone on their network. Next up will be LTE and the new iteration of the iPhone.

It is my understanding that you can be on a phone call and still browse the web if you are connected to WIFI. The call comes in on the CDMA network, but your data transmission can still connect through the LAN.

This can be done on a number of Verizon Android devices right now. I don't believe this was the context of the question.

I agree.

The Thunderbolt will be able to do it because LTE supports simultaneous data and voice. However, even it, initially, can only be done when in a 4G area (reliably). It will handle the call over 3G and data over 4G. Move outside of a 4G area and data will not be accessible while on a call.

If Verizon enables SVDO while on its CDMA network, it will not be consistent and will likely result in poor performance.

Any one planning on Jailbreaking? ...because this would be AWESOME

Is there (going to be) a way to jailbreak it? My boyfriend can't jailbreak his AT&T iphone4..

I would LOVE to right away.. There are a few apps that I want but the OS is too new according to every website I have looked at to even try to jailbreak my ipod and I have been ignoring every update since I upgraded to OS4.

I'm not 100% we will be able to do it right away. It will depend a lot on the firmware version. It is possible, if the firmware is too new, there are not jailbreak codes available yet. It is always best to wait a while after new firmware to let other people jailbreak first. That way, people realize what bugs there may be and perfect the process.

But if you are looking for some research, here is a good site to give you a good intro to jailbreaking.

yes it will be able to be jailbroken. They just came out with an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2 which is the current firmware for the att iphone 4. The talk is that it might just work on the verizon iphone. I am getting mine tomorrow and I think I will try and jailbreak it. Its just software so worst thing is ill just have to restore it. :D

cngREV, will you post the link to the software? Are you going to use greenpois0n?

While I will never be an AT&T customer EVER again, and I have hoped the iPhone would come to Verizon, this is a bit silly gang.

Thanks a lot. I am going to wait a few weeks before I think about jailbreaking, but I'm doing the research now. There are a lot of cool options. It is nice to have something a little different going on with your phone than every other person who has an iphone 4. A fancy lock screen is a good place to start.

Waiting sounds like a good plan. My husband ever so kindly jailbroke my iPad-
after THAT fiasco I told him he better keep his hands of my iPhone. I'd like it to work nicely for a while first :D

Stubee,
cmon now, don't be a spoilsport! Just because you HAVE a life.... some of us are not so lucky! lol

Besides, you couldn't pass this by now could you? ;)

finally some movement!

Its still 2-3 hours away though, it took them 37 hours to move the package through 2 states, doesn't sound like "air" to me! it better not take that long to move it up to MA!
