someone may have already posted this, but I don't think you can compare the two. When AT&T had the iphone it was just released. Verizon is getting it after the fact. If anything its impressive the numbers are the same considering how many people already have one on AT&T.

AT&T is king

Wacko!

30% ex-Android users moving to iPhone on Verizon? That's a big plus for Apple.

Admittedly, they might be Apple-fans who were tied to Verizon and couldn't get the iPhone previously.

And they might be in a contract that they don't want to pay to break, especially since it's to another big company with little difference from AT&T.

But, seriously, ex-Android users?

Two things:

1. People waiting for the revised version of the iphone, and

2. Current customers are locked into AT&T or Verizon smart phones and cannot upgrade at the present moment.

Why spend the money to get out of the current contract?

The title of this thread is misleading. Verizon is matching and exceeding ATT sales.

But everyone is forgetting the pre-order event:

Verizon iPhone 4 Smartphones Sell Out During Preorder Offering
By: Michelle Maisto
2011-02-04

"Verizon Wireless has stopped taking orders for its soon-to-launch Apple iPhone 4, reporting that it has already sold through its initial inventory.

Verizon first introduced its CDMA version of the iPhone 4 Jan. 11, and began accepting preorders from existing customers on Feb.3 at 3 a.m. EST.

“This was an exciting day,” said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer for Verizon Wireless, said in a Feb. 4 statement. “In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history.”

The company stopped accepting orders at 8:10 p.m. on Feb 3.

..."

The question to ask here is how many iphones were sold in this store on a daily basis prior to the launch of the Verizon iphone? Has the matching of sales for the two in fact doubled sales of iphones all together?

As for ATT vs. Verizon, customers wanting to make the switch but needing to buy out of a contract will wait for the iphone 5 unless they live in an area with very poor reception. Why pay more for a buy out and then pay later for an upgraded phone?

As I live outside the US, I've not got first-hand experience of Verizon's market, and of course it's quite likely people are waiting for the new iPhone rather than buy one now or they are in a contract they don't want to get out of which has hit sales numbers. It does remind me a bit of all the people who were saying "I can't believe the phone doesn't have a front-facing camera".

I went from a Verizon Droid owner (Motorola Droid, V1) to the Verizon iPhone. So far so good. The iPhone has a much better screen, much better touchscreen dynamics, much easier to type on, much faster. Admittedly, the Droid has a much slower processor. Browser on the iPhone seems much faster than the Droid browser, too. Battery life so far seems about 50% better than the best I ever got out of the Droid. iPhone camera is just awesome! I do miss the built in speech to text on the Droid.

From what me and my friends have discussed, a lot of people may be waiting on the iPhone 5 release this summer... unless someone is just sick of their droid, they would probably want to wait for the next iPhone instead of buying the iPhone 4 and learning that it's just become obsolete in 4 months' time.

Congrats on your new iPhone! :)
as for speech --> text, try dragon dictation.

Agreed with everything about the touchscreen. Apple still kills Droid when it comes to touchscreen dynamics, although many HTC phones are very very good. My droid was getting sluggish. I did get pretty good battery out of my Droid though. The things I miss are:
1. Flawless voice integration and Google Maps turn by turn navigation
2. Notification system. It's lightyears better on Android.
3. Custom message tones for everything. Its ridiculous to me that you have to jailbreak to do this on an iPhone.

Other than that, the iPhone sweeps the rest. I've overall very happy with my decision to switch.

Don't mean to diss on the iPhone, but there is seriously no custom ring/notification tones?

I wish I had an iPhone to play around with sometimes.

The iPhone is a mini computer that also makes/receives calls. With AT&T 3G >2x faster than Verizon's and no simulataneuos voice & data on the Verizon network, I fail to see why anybody would think that a lot of AT&T iPhone owners would switch.

Custom ringtones, yes. You can use apps from the store to make ringtones out of your mp3 library, and it works really well. Notification tones though? No, you are stuck with the absolute garbage that comes stock on the phone. On Android, you can download soundboards from the market, hold on the button, and instantly save sounds as custom tones for all or some of your contact list. You should be able to do that on the iPhone too, but you cant. I had a "Guess Who" notification for my texts, it was Herbert from Family guy. Everyone at work loves it and knows its my phone, so it adds a nice personal touch. Cant do it though with my iphone. Overall though, not THAT big of a deal compared to everything else.

Will add that I love love love the phone interface on the iPhone 500000X better than on my droid. It responds so instantaneous, and the voicemail inbox is great.

That doesn't really make sense.

Every person who is buying an AT&T phone today is one who will not likely be switching to Verizon in two years.

People expected this mass exodus from Verizon to AT&T and it didn't happen and it is not going to happen.

As for people claiming everyone is waiting on the iPhone 5... almost anyone who wants an iPhone on Verizon has no idea about the iPhone 5 or when it might come out... So there is no way that is the reason for the overwhelming majority of people.

What it does is allow people with REAL signal issues to settle with Verizon on the iPhone. The reality is the number of people who fall under that umbrella are much smaller than lots of people here have been claiming for the past couple years.

Otherwise AT&T and Verizon are just resigning their own customers, new customers and trading some others between each other.

This move is not going to improve Verizon's marketshare over AT&T in any significant way, but it will keep them from losing marketshare.

The voice data thing is a problem and did get some press, but I am not sure the average user understands it.. Although they might because I hear it stupidly explained. I did not appreciate it on the original iPhone, so I certainly view it as a big negative.. but I don't have any reason to leave AT&T, so it is not even a consideration for me.

If i was having signaling problems with AT&T and wanted to switch, I would wait until they had a phone that allowed simultaneous usage, but that is only because I have first-hand experience with an iPhone that could not do it, and it blows.

My one week side by side comparison of both CDMA & GSM models reveals they're so much alike, I see no reason to buy now.

Apple is in an odd position. I'm sure there's a reason why, it better be a good one.

The anti-AT&T rhetoric for years has been based primarily on jealousy. Verizon users were stuck in a contract that could not get the prize phone. Now they can get the phone but its not as good as the AT&T version. The Verizon network is antiquated, and is not ready for the iPhone experience. AT&T did a brilliant thing by grabbing the exclusive rights to the iPhone, and they have done quite a job building out a network that supports it well. Do people get dropped calls? sure... Guess what, you'll get dropped calls on Verizon, or any other carrier. It's the technology... I prefer my dropped calls on a 50% faster network that lets me use my phone in duplex.

And 4G? Sure, I guess Verizon is coming out with 4G, as is AT&T but for now, its not really worth discussing because it is in its infancy.

Apple is known for holding back on technology a bit and using stable, known quality parts, software, etc. They are control freaks when it comes to their products. With that being said, if Verizon is so great and AT&T is so bad, why did Verizon not get the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, or even the first iPhone 4? If AT&T's Network was so bad, then Apple would have an out contractually...

The answer. AT&T was and still is the best network for the iPhone and any smartphone for that matter.

Really???

Ok I don't usually say much so I will try and keep this neat and quick

If eveyone follows the trends, where is technology leading us in the wireless industry? Data.... that being said think of this. When do you really talk on your phone? okay the one or two calls you make a day may be a factor to some people but mainly what do you really do with your phone these days? text, facebook, myspace, twitter, email, send pictures and video. I can't even remember the last time i called someone. not cause im too busy to talk or not because i dont wanna talk, its just easier to send a text and move on with what i am doing. Even now as you are reading this on your laptop or desktop, or maybe a rss feed or on your ipad or iphone you are continually using data.

My guess is the company that provides the best data-rich experience will win the battle. Phones are all the same now-a-days people are over the cool factor and becoming more about what it can do for me and my lifestyle.

Think about it...

Because both services are slow compared to high speed wifi anyway so if you use your phone as a phone and make use of it as a mini computer in wifi zones then perhaps the better cell phone service is the deciding factor.

I've found the 3G speeds to be not worth the time except for checking email or mapping a route. Forget streaming audio or video reliably. I'd rather just wait for a wifi location.

I think if I was out of contract I'd consider dropping down to no data plan at all for my iphone.

Wrong. If you travel through rural areas with your ATT phone you will lose coverage and likely guess the locals have no cell phone service. The truth is that Verizon likely has coverage. If you live in an urban area then it likely doesn't matter which service you have. I have heard some large cities have local problems with one or the other. So everyone has their preference based on their own location.

But for many people who find themselves living or traveling off of the main highways in rural areas, Verizon has proven to be the best coverage. It makes sense that once you know you can trust Verizon to give you signal, you'll stick with it.

not surprising...

with iPhone 5 right around the corner, why buy now? I'm sure Verizon will see more traffic at that time.

I wasn't "Wrong". I partially agree... If you travel through rural areas with Verizon or Sprint, you can lose your coverage too. Verizon has some rural areas covered that AT&T doesn't and Vice Versa. So I would agree that if you live in a rural area where Verizon has the upper hand, then you may be able to rule the air with an antique CDMA phone. For the rest of the country (probably 98%), AT&T 3G GSM is the ticket.

The point of the article is that people are not flocking to the Verizon Network. They are getting about half of the new sales. This means people are re-upping with AT&T which is quite interesting if you have followed the rhetoric for years.

My hat is still off to AT&T for giving an overall excellent experience to the first 4 generations of Apple Smart Phones.

iPhone is no longer cool with the kids. Why help prop up a vicious dictatorship when you can go Android and enjoy the sweet taste of freedom?
