it's a shame ATT had nearly four years to get their network up to speed with Verizon's or at the very least, fix their image that their network was just as strong. I don't think they've done either.

I have to agree with this, even though it's been the most persistent rumor since the iPhone was launched. look at the evidence...

-Early upgrades for most iPhone owners
-Move away from unlimited data plans which was a huge incentive for Apple to go with AT&T initially. I doubt AT&T would have pulled this crap if their exclusivity agreement with Apple wasn't almost up anyway.

put the pieces together...actions speak louder than words.

This is pretty much a given considering AT&T raised their cancellation fees and gave most of us upgrade pricing on iPhone 4. Otherwise we all would have jumped ship come January, which is about the time our upgrade would have become active. Now we are stuck for two years, but it's not a big deal for me where I live. I get 4-6mbps down and 1-1.5mbps up.

I wonder how many people will still pay the fee and switch? I bet more than AT&T thinks.

Well, this site is called Mac "rumors" but I guess the title could be more specific.

CNBC also just picked up the story.

Bloomberg is fairly reputable and would not speculate without there being some back up. So it will likely be a while before an official statement is made, there is likely to be more truth to it than perhaps in the past with January being a fair time frame.

If true, will be interesting if design is slightly different and how many new AT&T subs jump back and pay the fee. VZ could get aggressive and pay that early term fee.

I heard from my INSIDE source...Apple is changing their name from Apple to banana.

Banana phone. (probably sell 5 million phones per second)

Two things in life you can take for granted each day:

The sun will rise in the morning and there will be a report saying Verizon is getting the iPhone.

It's not like I haven't been wrong before but these rumors about iPhone on Verizon never have any air of authenticity to them. I think part of it is how eager Verizon execs are to make public statements about these things. One thing that has always been consistent about companies that Apple partners with--they become very quiet about their plans. If Verizon suddenly clams up and starts issuing a lot of "no comment" type responses, then maybe I'll start buying these rumors.

Hearing about this mythical joint venture between Apple and Verizon is getting as tiresome as the 2012 End-Of-World stories people just won't shut up about. Ugh!

I'll believe this rumor a full THREE days after it actually happens, and not a moment before.

I mean, I certainly HOPE it happens so people leave AT&T and free up some of my bandwidth, but... c'mon.

.

Sounds to me like someone's trying to pump the stock again with more rumors from "credible" sources.

Now the iPhone can cripple that network. Can't wait for all the switchers to start complaining about how Verizon's network sucks. LOL

Whoa! I know everyone says, "yeah, so tell me a NEW rumor!" But, if true, imagine having over 1.5 million new and renewed customers thinking that they just got a phone that didn't cost $199 or $299, but more like $400 or $500...considering the early term fee they're going to pay to switch to VZW...maybe only to have similarly clogged networks. Not good. Not good at all.

Presumably Apple would announce it before it went on sale - I'd guess as early as September (at the traditional iPod refresh event), or as late as November.
