I think this rumor is true. I've been reading these rumors for years, but in the last few months there has been a shift in tone and believability. I think we will see a non-AT&T iPhone early in 2011 in the U.S.

And about time.

The Verizon iPhone is like Santa Claus

You may as well add the iPhone VZW model to rumors such as Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Diet Dr Pepper Guy, Big Foot, etc.

Is it really real or another myth?

I swear I have heard this rumor before.:apple:

If true, I can't wait to see how Verizon gimps the iPhone. Will it be with special Verizon branded apps? Removed features? Pay extra for every little feature you want to enable? More expensive apps because VzW wants a piece of the action?

Yeah...this should be interesting to see (assuming it really happens this time).

If they fix the antenna issue then I think all iPhone 4 users should get a free upgrade.

I believe it this time.

I've been saying for the better part of a year that the timeline would be:
1. iphone 4 is released for AT&T only in the US
2. AT&T sells a butt-ton of them (while boosting their ETF as well)
3. AT&T has more or less finished "Release day" sales, and BANG announcement goes out for VZW

AT&T gets new subscribers and hardware sales, plus ETF for everyone who's been waiting to jump to VZW...at which point VZW gets to sell hardware and subscriptions, apple gets to sell hardware, AT&T collects subs they've already sold, and the ETF.

Everybody wins except joe consumer

The Verizon iPhone is almost bigger than the PowerBook G5

Now this does play along with other Verizon rumors, but this really doesn't tell us anything. Apple is working on generation 5 of the iPhone? Duh!

If the antenna issue had been an issue, I would have agreed.

I was just joking. I agree it is no issue. It's just anytime there is a rumor about any change to the iPhone design a bunch of people jump in saying they should get a free upgrade because of the antenna thing.

Separately, the newspaper also reports that Apple is developing a new iPhone model. This fifth-generation iPhone is said to have a different form factor than those currently available. They were unsure how soon this fifth-generation iPhone would become available on Verizon.

I was starting to get a little nervous, but good think we have the WSJ to re-assure us that Apple is not getting out of the phone business and is planning in advance to release another iPhone in 2011.

Now, can they confirm that an iPhone 6 will be released in 2012?

Cool, it is getting hard to play dumb. Too many real dumb people get in the way. Outlaw stupidity now!

Wow, I am surprised. Why would they do that? Guess nobody saw this coming. thanks WSJ for this cutting edge news.

Just a reminder, folks: Even in the story about the boy who cried "Wolf!" there came a point in the story when the wolf actually showed up.

So just because we've heard rumors in the past, this does not tell us anything about these new rumors. They live or die on their own.

Don't be like the townsfolk who got so sick of that boy crying wolf that they missed the real thing when it appeared. Cynicism must be balanced by realism.

I wonder if the 'iPhone being made for Verizon' is a subject MythBusters could address.....

Why are people assuming a CDMA iphone would go to Verizon?

There are other large CDMA markets in the world, e.g. China.

subject says it all.

it's not going to happen in my (your) lifetime.

get over it.

move along. nothing to see here.

Ooh, I love posts like this because you set in stone a prediction that is so obviously going to be proven wrong. In most countries Apple has multiple partners. It will happen in the U.S. too, guaranteed.

Set in stone :)
