This really isn't an Apple announcement- it's a Verizon announcement. Nothing new on Apple's end- it's not a new product or upgrade. The carrier owns the hype for this.

You are 100 percent correct! This is a Verizon announcement. It will be an IPHONE 4 and it will have the CDMA chip in it...The Iphone 5 will have the combo CDMA\GSM chip in it. LTE next year...but we might be surprised that the LTE Iphone will be the IPhone 5.

Makes sense for Verizon to be doing the launch. It's the same phone on a different carrier, Apple doesn't need to be there to pimp it. Hope it really turns out to be the Vzw iPhone so, at the very least, these stories can stop. Similar to the long road of iPad rumors.

LTE is very limited right now - as much as Sprint's 4G. A majority of people who would probably buy the iPhone on Verizon probably wouldn't even care because of the basic allure of finally getting the iPhone and that they would have the same experience as AT&T customers (albeit with better coverage).

Now, will this be the Verizon iPhone? Maybe, because Gizmodo wasn't invited, but maybe not.

Here is an excerpt from PC Mag from last year:

According to that very source, Verizon hopes to hit 115 to 120 million customers with LTE coverage this year—a bit more than the aforementioned 100 million as told to PCMag.com by Verizon's vice president of network operations, Tony Malone.
As for 2011, most universities and cities in Lousiana will be covered by Verizon's LTE network. Joining them will be a number of cities in Mississippi, Alabama, and West Virginia, including Oxford, South Haven, Huntsville, Birmingham, and Montgomery. Again, that's not the full listing of cities. But if Malone's statements to PCMag.com hold up, expect LTE coverage to double by the end of the year/beginning of 2012.

This means that by the end of 2011 200 to 240 million people will have LTE coverage and those who will not probably have not heard about iPhone yet anyways :)

I hope this is true. Getting tired of hearing about market domination from the Fandroids (thanks a lot, AT&T iPhone exclusivity).

Time to level the playing field.

Now how about Sprint and T-Mobile too? Sprint has some killer plan prices.

Yeah android is about done after this....LMAO....at least they are trying in the tablet market. Android 3.0 is nice...but we all know ISO 5.0 on the IPAD 2 will gonna kill all. And the cool thing is that apple uses the same os for all of its IOSs...well its different on the IPAD vs Iphone...but it is till the basic os.

I'm looking forward to all the extra bandwidth on AT&T when the Verizon iPhone comes knocking!

Lol. I'm hoping that at least half of the iPhone users in San Francisco go rushing over to Verizon. I have zero issues with signal coverage or dropped calls in my town, but going to SF and trying to use my phone is basically IMPOSSIBLE.

Maybe it's the Verizon Android App Store!!!

(of course it's the CDMA iPhone for Verizon. 100%)

Not to burst your bubble, but competition in other countries didn't have much impact on the price of the iPhone or the wireless rates.

Yet we are not other countries :p

Perhaps it won't effect price, but it may push companies to [quickly] improve their infrastructure to entice more customers. Perhaps AT&T has been sitting on their cash reserve in anticipation that VW may agree to Apples' terms. Apple isn't known for disclosing its business practices keeping other companies on their toes. AT&T could have invested much of their reserve already but that would be a risk, so it may appear AT&T has been conservatively adjusting their network to consumer demand in order to keep a healthy reserve in case of such an event.

Who knows? Speculation is fun though :).

I just got word that they canceled the event because the invite was posted after they asked nicely to keep it to yourself.

Thanks MacRumors.

Are all of you that said iPhone will NEVER go to Verizon ready to be wrong?

Just asking ;)

P.S. Just think, if it doesn't happen tuesday how much of an douche I will look like! haha

UPDATE: Looks like all major media outlets were invited EXCEPT Gizmodo...

Won't a Verizon iPhone released now do just that? The fact that a newer iPhone is coming this summer is going to make me wait.

I was refereing to someone's comment where they said they would announce it now but not ship it until summer.

Honestly, what would Steve have to present in an entire, full fledged Apple event? He would pack in 5,000 people just to go on stage, show some fancy financial stats and then simply say "the iPhone is now available on Verizon Wireless."

No.

This is a Verizon announcement because Apple makes announcements for new products. This isn't a new product. Furthermore, by Apple making a big hype about Verizon, it will display to investors that Apple isn't confident about there decisions and is realizing they made a mistake with Verizon and AT&T. For PR reasons alone, it is better for Apple to let VZW make any sort of annoucement.

This is perfect logic.. Agreed 100%

Man, I feel like it's Christmas all over again. Sad I know. But the best phone on the best network. Guess I will have to get me a MacBook pro to complete my fanboyism.

If it is iPhone 4 the timing is just awful. Not only iPhone 5 is going to be announced soon, iPhone 4 is hopelessly outmatched on Verizon right now. It can not compete with LTE-capable phones. Who is going to buy 3G phone on 4G network?

For geeks this is an issue. For the vast majority who want a usable phone, non-issue. Verizon's LTE at this point isn't all that special anyways.

In 2007 those 2G iphones sold horribly with all those 3G phones out there, huh?

I saw a lot of smart chaps today saying Apple will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER let anyone annonce their product.

If this proves to be correct, your names WILL be dug out and put to shame. You will never be allowed to act smart ass again on this forum.
