At first, I was kind of astonished by all the denial in this thread. But then I figured, given the mountains of evidence that that have already been dismissed and denied regarding the Verizon iPhone, what's one more press invitation?

I don't think it is an iphone announcement because apple will do it. The only thing telling me that it might be verizon announcing it is the fact that it would be a dead give away if it was apple.

I already have had the iphone since the original launch and personally can't wait for people to rush out and get the IPHONE 4 3-5 months before the new one comes out and then either just be stuck with the iphone 4 or just cough up the extra money to cancel there contract and make another one.

wow. this is insane. I've heard rumors for release in february, in 4 months, in 6 months, 2012, and June 2012. Now I'm hearing, next week??? I can just picture it. This is going to be like when Apple made a big deal of releasing the Beatles on iTunes. Everybody's going to be so pissed 'cause they were fooled again. You know what I think? I think Verizon is taking advantage of this stir-up of information. Their "big" announcement will draw many eyes and ears, more than if there were no iPhone rumors. And thus whatever they release will get more publicity. They are taking advantage of your gullibility!!!

But I guess we can only hope......cross your fingers for a Verizon iphone everyone!! :)

Me thinks you're giving Verizon too much credit. They aren't that clever :)

the plot thickens

actually what they said at Giz does make a little sense:

"Verizon's holding a special event on January 11. They're announcing the Verizon iPhone. We're almost certain of it, and here's why:

There's been a Verizon event making the rounds—it's next Tuesday, January 11th. The invite has been sent to MG Siegler of Techcrunch and Jim Dalrymple of Loop Insight—both pretty prolific Apple reporter/writers/bloggers/whatever. And, as MG himself notes:

I don't typically get invites directly from Verizon to anything. At least not that I can recall. They usually send those directly to the MobileCrunch and CrunchGear guys. But this invite appears to very specifically be for me - it's non-transferable. Would Verizon send me such an invite unless it was specially about Apple?

Here's what's key: We're great friends with Verizon. (Hi guys!) We've worked with them for years, and we've been to like every event they've had over the last three years. We haven't gotten an invite. Which is weird. We've reached out to Verizon to see why, exactly, we weren't invited, but we've gotten no comment yet. (And they're super on their game, so they're usually pretty quick to reply.) The obvious answer is that it's an Apple event, and Steve doesn't want us there. You know the story.

Added to everything that's been reported over the last few months—and again today in the Times, we think Verizon's announcing the iPhone."

Hard to say that this is what the rumor alleges, especially since Verizon has been busy rolling out their faster network. Could likely be a 4G LTE announcement.

VZW already announced their 4G network. There have been advertisements already around this online and offline for some time now.

It's been pointed out numerous times already, in other countries where iPhone has been opened up to other carriers, NONE of those have there been an Apple event for. For the most part, it was the CARRIER'S press release that announced it.

Why would VZW be any different? ESPECIALLY since it's (essentially) the same phone!

This is all I need to see.

Disagree. This is apples standard procedure. Verzion is just another carrier to apple. Its the same iphone 4. Therefore, I can see apple saying well to us its just another carrier let them announce it just like its done for international carriers. Plus it feeds apples ego that mightly Verizon is not even important that we have to be the ones making the announcement. But this is obviously 10 - 30 m units a year. Damn I love apple. <---- FANBOY.

not an apple event? hmmm… maybe, but a break from standard operating procedure.

Question: is it still iPhone 4 or the new iPhone 5 to be announced on the 11th?

Nobody knows. It's a mysteryyyyyyy. But ya, we'll find out on the 11th. And you can't say there will be an iPhone 5 or a Verizon iphone. The invitation says nothing of the matter. There may be or there may be not. I'm gonna bet they're just going to say something like "4G is released in more than 10 more countries!" Everybody will be really disappointed. Of course, I could be wrong.

Maybe it's just an announcement that the new iPhone will be out this summer on Verizon. At the same time the new version comes out on AT&T.

No way Apple would let Verizon introduce a new hardware refresh. No way.

Look, this is going to be the Verizon iPhone. There is loads of evidence and Gizmodo is not invited:D

Apple wouldn't do a whole event just on this, they didn't for any other carrier or country in the world so why would they for Verizon?

I am pleased for the americans here that another carrier is getting the iPhone, competition is great for the consumer, as it has been proven all over the world.

Take it from someone who is not from the USA and thus not emotionally attached to this story and say what you want, but this will be the Verizon iPhone announcement. End of.

Anything is possible but if it is an announcement. I expect a device within 2 weeks. No way apple would announce and slow down sales of at&t iphones.

Won't a Verizon iPhone released now do just that? The fact that a newer iPhone is coming this summer is going to make me wait.

This is the feeling I get:

VW wanted to really debut the VW iPhone, a compromise made by Apple, which is why VW is holding the event. I think most of know that VW was always trying to get more from Apple than Apple was willing to give, since they are both control freaks. This may have been the big compromise, since Jobs loves to talk.

VW already discussed their 2011 plans at CES, meaning they took care of business and want to steal the thunder right after CES (this was already rumored). No one will remember CES this year if VW/Apple debut the iPhone a day after it is over.

The original iPad was debuted early Feb and didnt ship till mid April. Seems like the 11th for iPad 2 is premature to debut (but this is hard since we dont have an idea of Apple's product cycle, since we have no history on models).

My gut feels like we will see the iPhone next Tuesday, but the debut at VW still feels odd though. I say 80% yes.

Also, VW will debuting a version of the iPhone that has been out, nothing new, which is why Apple may not debut it, cause this is more VWs benefit than Apple, Apple has nothing new to show, so Jobs doesnt need to sell it twice. Hmm.

I hope this doesn't have anything to do with an Apple product. Verizon announcing an iPhone or iPad would make it appear Verizon is calling the shots instead of Apple. It's already starting to look like Verizon is abusing Android (Bing on the Galaxy S?!), and basically coaxed Google into changing its stance on net neutrality. I only fear how Verizon would abuse a relationship with Apple.
