I hope Verizon doesn't cripple anything on the phone for you lucky bastards who are going to get one :D

I would love to have an iPhone but don't want to pay for a data package. I would only like to use the Wi-Fi. And since I know that is impossible I guess I will just stick with an iPod Touch.

Unlimited Data is mostly a marketing thing as parents with kids have been charged for thousands of dollars, eventhough they have a Unlimited plan, because their teens are always on the phone and ranking up the text and data.

I actually use it a lot, not to be rude but to actually give information to the person I am talking to...to look up something in an e-mail (if I'm on the phone because of a work related thing), or to find the address or phone number of a restaurant.

Would it prevent me from switching to Verizon because they don't offer it? No; but it sure comes in handy sometimes.

Yes if the information your looking at is for the person you are talking to.. But some people do it when it has nothing to do with the person and I find that rude because you are caring more about a email then the person you are talking to.. Also how can you look at a email or web when talking to a person when you are driving? In most states you can not texts or read email when driving..

Too bad, I will alsleep, since I work overnight. I will awake in the afternoon to read what happen. I hoping for cdma/gsm/lte radio. However, I may just wait for the iphone 5.

2 Words:

Unlimited Data.

T-Mobile in the UK apparently has just changed their definition of "unlimited" from "unlimited as long as you don't use more than 3 GB per month" to "unlimited as long as you don't use more than 500 MB per month".

So I would first want to read the fineprint. And even that won't help you because the fineprint will just contain vague language that can mean anything.

I agree to a point. If it is not related to the call, I too find it rude. Just like when you hang out with people and they text all the time while around you

Or when you are in line at a store and the service rep drops everything, including helping you, to assist the customer on the phone. Man that really bugs me

Also how can you look at a email or web when talking to a person when you are driving? In most states you can not texts or read email when driving..

True.....but no-one brought up driving when saying they like that feature. Think along the lines at a coffee shop, or as a passenger, or wherever.

Everyone uses different features in different ways. You asked who and why..

And who ever said I was driving? I said I give addresses and phone numbers to the person I am talking to...

And, in Texas, they only limit texting while driving to drivers under 17 and everyone driving in a school zone. ;)

I can't wait to see all the people who shouted at the top of their lungs that Verizon will "NEVER EVER UNDERSCORE BOLD MANY EXCLAMATION POINTS FOLLOWING CONFIRMED" get the iPhone finally put their ignorance aside and shut up.

Yeah... You been waiting for this to happen for the last 4 years? Because that was totally worth it.

So how long is CDMA going to be around? Surely iPhone will head in the LTE direction soon. Is Verizon going to go to LTE or WiMAX or what?

I guess this is just a short-term stepping stone to make some extra bucks for Apple. Pretty frustrating that "latest and greatest" Steve will have CDMA but not Blu-Ray in Macs...

How is your OWN personal data usage relevant to anybody else's?

Because no one needs unlimited? It's impossible to use it all. ;)

Also, mobile networks are better with limits. Otherwise you oversubscribe the network. I have 6GB a month on the best mobile network in the world and I struggle to use it (~100MB in an average month, few GB if I tether, for free).

Also you probably won't get free tethering if it's unlimited, whereas having a cap means you are paying for X data, so they generally don't care if you use it on the phone or on the Mac/PC.

Then that is not unlimited then.. It dose not matter how they definition unlimited.. If there is a cap or a limit then it is not unlimited.. Here we call that fault advertisement and breaking the law.. So you can sue for fault advertisement..

.

Ridiculous response of the month.

Duh.

Do you feel better about yourself now?

...and your point about free tethering is flawed. AT&T does not offer free tethering in the US AND it has caps. There goes your theory...but what else is new???

Verizon's coverage here is bad. AT&T's is non-existant. But AT&T is launching their new (all-3G) network here, an overbuild of Alltel's CDMA network which already has far better coverage than Verizon (and AT&T is adding new sites to it as well), next month.

Bad timing, because Verizon definitely has a HUGE subscriber lead here over Alltel. I expected many to switch to get AT&T and the iPhone. If this announcement came in the summer, that'd have helped AT&T a lot!

You do know that Verizon bought out Alitel right?.. So that means Verizon has the same coverage as when it was Alitel because they are using the same towers that Alitel used...

Im really excited for the iPhone to come to Verizon. Im already on Verizon using the Droid X and wouldn't leave Verizon for any other service. I live in Pittsburgh, PA and my service is incredible. AT&T is shotty even in the city center. I have no intentions on switching to the iPhone this year tho as i love my Droid (not trying to start a fan war because im a huge apple user also). Unlimited data is awesome, not because I really use more then 2gb in a month, but because I tether my Macbook Pro to it (for free :D ) and dont have to worry about going over. Welcome to Verizon all who come!

Not completely correct, many markets, including mine, were mandated divestitures. In my market, Alltel was spun off and sold to AT&T, who is launching their new network on the Alltel sites next month.

http://www.att.com/mergers/alltel/index.jsp has more details!

Oh, and I'm really happy - the Alltel to AT&T markets that have already been converted have even better coverage than Alltel had, along with much faster data speeds. And my BlackBerry Tour (out of contract) is getting replaced for free with a Samsung Captivate (I had a choice of free smartphones - Samsung Captivate, BlackBerry Torch, BlackBerry Curve, HTC Aria, Samsung Focus, LG Quantum, HTC Surround, or Palm Pre Plus) - and no contract or change to my plan!

However, if I go iPhone, I have to pay, sign a contract, and give up my Alltel plan :(

This is a good news for consumers. The more choice the better. But for some of us who travel internationally, a CDMA-based phone is simply not an option.

If a million people leave ATT for Verizon, will my iPhone start working as a phone?

Ok so how can AT&T use a tower that was made for CDMA? AT&T is GSM not CDMA..

Towers aren't made for anything, they're just that - towers. The electronics determine the technology. AT&T is adding UMTS (NOT GSM, pure-3G only) to the Alltel sites, and massively expanding backhaul. This work will be done next month. They're also adding many new sites planned to launch soon!

Hmm...

Isn't anyone surprised at how, in 2011 you have telco's that still use ageing CDMA while the rest of the world is in 3G and Edge, moving on.

It's incredible how people are willing to put up with these limitations from Verizon when the rest of the world has had these features for years. Hell even here in Australia where we have really stingy telcos we at least have rather decent cellular services.

Bit like how you's still broadcast some shows in letterbox 4:3. When we recieve them here, its so...fuzzy and compressed. 100% HD down under :D

Really because with your link

A new phone or data device

AT&T will provide Alltel's individual and family plan customers with a new, FREE phone or data device comparable to the one they have today with no additional contract term required. You will also have the option of upgrading to the latest technology and the most innovative devices AT&T has to offer.

Prepaid customers will also have the opportunity to purchase new AT&T phones at deeply discounted prices and transfer their current account balance to their new AT&T GoPhone® prepaid plan account.

It looks to me AT&T only took over the accounts in your area but not the towers because they would not be giving out FREE Phones other wise.. Towers are built with CDMA or UMTS..

Again AT&T ONLY USE GSM/UMITS Phones....

CDMA2000 EVDO blows away GSM EDGE. Also, CDMA is newer than GSM. And it is 3G. 3G means many things.

CDMA *feels* old and low-tech because Qualcomm made it AMPS-compatible, so it uses the same switching. Thus why it doesn't support true 3-way and conference calling (just a very basic form of 3-way calling) or simultaneous voice and data. Qualcomm had a proposal called CDMA 1X to use a GSM MAP core network and switches with CDMA once CDMA deployment was complete to modernize the functionality and roaming abilities, but carriers never bought into it.

UMTS is much newer and faster, but coverage is still limited compared to CDMA. GSM to UMTS is an expensive and difficult migration still not totally complete by most carriers.
