The move may also threaten Android's growth in the U.S. with one analyst predicting that the iPhone will significantly cannibalize sales of competing models on Verizon's network.
Whis is also the reason Apple is doing this.

Unlimited Data.
I actually use it a lot, not to be rude but to actually give information to the person I am talking to...to look up something in an e-mail (if I'm on the phone because of a work related thing), or to find the address or phone number of a restaurant.
Would it prevent me from switching to Verizon because they don't offer it? No; but it sure comes in handy sometimes.
I haven't even come close to my 2GB limit. "Unlimited Data" seems like more of a marketing tactic to me.

Yes if the information your looking at is for the person you are talking to.. But some people do it when it has nothing to do with the person and I find that rude because you are caring more about a email then the person you are talking to..
Also how can you look at a email or web when talking to a person when you are driving? In most states you can not texts or read email when driving..

I can't wait to see all the people who shouted at the top of their lungs that Verizon will "NEVER EVER UNDERSCORE BOLD MANY EXCLAMATION POINTS FOLLOWING CONFIRMED" get the iPhone finally put their ignorance aside and shut up.
How is your OWN personal data usage relevant to anybody else's?
T-Mobile in the UK apparently has just changed their definition of "unlimited" from "unlimited as long as you don't use more than 3 GB per month" to "unlimited as long as you don't use more than 500 MB per month".
So I would first want to read the fineprint. And even that won't help you because the fineprint will just contain vague language that can mean anything.
Because no one needs unlimited? It's impossible to use it all.

Verizon's coverage here is bad. AT&T's is non-existant. But AT&T is launching their new (all-3G) network here, an overbuild of Alltel's CDMA network which already has far better coverage than Verizon (and AT&T is adding new sites to it as well), next month.
Bad timing, because Verizon definitely has a HUGE subscriber lead here over Alltel. I expected many to switch to get AT&T and the iPhone. If this announcement came in the summer, that'd have helped AT&T a lot!
You do know that Verizon bought out Alitel right?.. So that means Verizon has the same coverage as when it was Alitel because they are using the same towers that Alitel used...
Not completely correct, many markets, including mine, were mandated divestitures. In my market, Alltel was spun off and sold to AT&T, who is launching their new network on the Alltel sites next month.
http://www.att.com/mergers/alltel/index.jsp has more details!
Ok so how can AT&T use a tower that was made for CDMA? AT&T is GSM not CDMA..
Towers aren't made for anything, they're just that - towers. The electronics determine the technology. AT&T is adding UMTS (NOT GSM, pure-3G only) to the Alltel sites, and massively expanding backhaul. This work will be done next month. They're also adding many new sites planned to launch soon!
Isn't anyone surprised at how, in 2011 you have telco's that still use ageing CDMA while the rest of the world is in 3G and Edge, moving on.
It's incredible how people are willing to put up with these limitations from Verizon when the rest of the world has had these features for years. Hell even here in Australia where we have really stingy telcos we at least have rather decent cellular services.
Bit like how you's still broadcast some shows in letterbox 4:3. When we recieve them here, its so...fuzzy and compressed. 100% HD down under![]()
