Actually, that's exactly what it means. Maybe not the fully non-subsidized $800, but definitely the part about one feeling entitled to things that one can't afford (especially such "necessities" as iPhones).

I'll be spending $330 on the phone, $170 to terminate my current line to get the phone, and I'm sure at least $100 in accessories within the first week. And no, that's not going to put me in the poor house or make me live on Ramen Noodles for the next year. This is just absolutely ridiculous. You people are basically saying that anyone who tries to get the best deal on something that they can, can't afford/shouldn't have whatever it is they're trying to buy.

Honestly I've never been to a forum where people concern themselves so much with other members' personal lives and business. I've seen members post a simple, honest question and end up getting ripped apart by some rude, sarcastic jack*** who has nothing better to do than try to make others feel inferior. Stop worrying about everyone else so much. We can take care of ourselves quite well and decide what we can and cannot afford, and what we would like to spend the money on that WE (not you or anyone else) earned, thank you. We've all managed to get this far into our existence without your infinitely wise advice and comments. I suspect we'll somehow manage to continue doing so.

I don't really think it's necessary for YOU to tell ME what I can and cannot afford. You know absolutely nothing about me or my financial situation. And you've clearly completely missed the point. The reason that I would need to add a line IS BECAUSE I AM NOT CURRENTLY ELIGIBLE FOR A DISCOUNTED UPGRADE ON MY LINE. Are you honestly telling me that you think everyone out there who owns an iPhone can/could afford to just buy one outright? **** no. Why do you think there are so many posts on here about people scrambling to figure out how to get the new phone at the discounted upgrade price? People do this all the time! Newsflash honey, not everyone out there can afford to drop $800 on a phone. THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY CAN'T "AFFORD" TO HAVE IT, OR THAT THEY DON'T DESERVE TO HAVE IT. That's honestly the dumbest, most arrogant and IGNORANT post I've read thus far on this forum, which is saying a lot.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

By the rage of your post I'm guessing you know deep down inside it's fiscally irresponsible to yourself and your family for you to buy this phone. The point is, you don't need the latest iPhone so only if you can afford it (either outright, or with a discount) should you buy it. Since you can't, you shouldn't.

But i'm sure you use the same logic when you go to Rent-A-Center to get a nice bigscreen tv you can't afford and don't need, and lease a car you can't afford and don't need, and buy that designer purse you can't afford and don't need.

It's definitely not necessary for me to tell you what you can and can't afford but in this case, with the information provided, what I'm telling you is correct. You can't afford an iPhone. Feel free to rage, curse, ignore or most likely all 3, but you have been given good advice to be satisfied with what you currently have and to save up for a day when you can purchase an iPhone in a responsible manner.

Have a great day! :)

Good grief, there are some sanctimonious jerks in this thread. I suppose if I search for coupons every week to save money on my groceries, I actually can't afford groceries and shouldn't buy them?

OP, I get it. You were hoping for a full upgrade, and sadly, found out those don't happen anymore unless the 2 years are truly up. So, you've found a way to do things that will save you some money. You haven't mentioned that you've opted not to have health insurance or plan to make your kids skip one meal a day, so I'm assuming this is more about saving yourself some money than it is about being poverty-stricken.

Go for it.

If you have to add a line to your plan so that you can "afford" the next iPhone it means you can't afford the new iPhone.

Do you understand?

To be fair, the OP said nothing about being able to afford the iPhone (unlike some of the threads). Adding a line to your plan for $120 per year actually makes good financial sense given that you'll be able to upgrade yearly (device swapping every other year) and ebay the old iPhone for $450+ (jailbroken and unlocked) each year.

Thank you both!! I'm honestly dumbfounded as to where this thread ended up. The logic (or lack thereof) of these people astounds me. You're both exactly right in what you said. The points you made are exactly the ones I was trying to reiterate! I'm not sure why he can't wrap his mind around such a simple concept. But it's good to know there are those out there who get what I was saying.

In the end, it's my money that I worked for, and I will spend it exactly how I see fit. I'm a full-time employed 29 year old woman with a 7 year old son and husband who owns his own business. I'm not (my family isn't) materialistic by any means (no expensive big screen tvs, no brand-new vehicles, no designer clothing and shoes), but I've decided I want to buy myself this phone and I really don't need to defend my spending choices to some self-righteous nobody on the internet. No more replies from me on this one.

First, you started your own thread, asking in posts #1, 10 how to handle your personal life and business. Receiving answers to these questions shouldn't shock you that much.

Second, if you last upgraded in March 2011, you should be eligible for full subsidy in Nov, I think it's actually 20 months, not 18 as mentioned. That's hardly a long time to wait (from late Sept release date, whatever it is) to save a few hundred dollars on the iPhone 5. It's very easy to find this precise date, simply log in to VZW online and it tells you right on the main account page. Also, you may be able to convince them to move it up a few weeks or a month or 2.

AT&T isn't offering upgrades either. I got the 4S on launch day and they want $250 in addition to the 2 year contract price for an upgrade.

It is cheaper for me to pay the etf, go to VZW and buy a subsidized phone than it is for me to stay at AT&T. Nobody sees this as a problem?

Verizon did away with the one-year contracts at least two years ago, probably longer.

No they did not. I bought a Droid X 2 years ago nearly to the day (today) and they had a 1 year contract. When I bought the iPhone last year they offered a 1 year contract on another Droid X, it was on their site as well for me. They said the iPhone never was nor will be available for a 1 year contract.

Wow, some of you people. Railing on posters trying to arrange the best deal possible for a phone, personally criticizing their lives, when at least one of you operates a thread comparing insurance plans costs down to the dollar as if you're planning on making claims (should I accuse insurance fraud?). Hypocrites.

To the OP, best of luck. Verizon had definitely positioned itself as the luxury carrier these days... little to no freebies anymore :( but the add-a-line switch sometimes ends up saving money.

Waa, waa, waa. God, you need to get over the entitlement. There was great advice in this thread, both about VZW timing/rules and financial points. And it was apparently ignored. The OP is the first one to go off on other posters, then responses to her got rougher.

Best advice in the thread: wait a couple months until the contract is up. Where was this? 1st reply.

If you can't wait and just gotta have it: that's entitlement. And that's sad.

(if you are right about the insurance thing, I agree about whomever you are talking about)

smdh! very ugly posts made by you. so sick of the holier than thou attitudes from people like you. everybody should get out of the business of telling others how they should spend their money. if he/she wants to terminate a contract, pay the penalty and buy the iPhone at 2 year contract price, that is their right and their money. your post just seems ignorant and mean. IMO.

haha! I was going to say the same thing about coupons but you beat me to it!!!

Your post has as much rage as the person I was talking to. Truth hurts. Sorry that you don't have people in your life that speak it and just let you be fiscally irresponsible. I know the motto of society today is, "EVERYTHING is OK as long as you don't harm another person" but that is a lie.

If you can't pay for an iPhone outright, you can't afford it. Feel free to justify all the hoops you have to jump through, and you can jump through those hoops to get it, but it still doesn't mean you SHOULD have.

Your response is typical for a lot of people today. Happy as long as everyone pats you on the back and says you are "good" or "alright" but once someone says you are wrong, all hell breaks loose.

Have a nice day! :)

I have Verizon and no annual upgrades here. In fact I have 5 lines with them. If you want the latest and greatest toys, you have to pay for them. I knew that when I signed up for them. It's ashame, but I knew what I was getting into. On that note, I will be buying their top of line iPhone in black. It's probably going to set me back about 1k, but I use my iPhone daily and feel its worth it to satisify my needs for the latest toys. Some think I'm crazy, but I'm paying for it and not you. Besides kind of need to since I have unlimited data. :)

If you are a single line account, than by all means do this. Carriers love individual line plans who like to pay $90-100 a month for that line.

But 60% of customers are on family plans these days so harder to move all family plans and pay 4-5 ETFs also.

But remember if you get new iPhone with Verizon. Verizon doesn't let you upgrade in 20 months also. So this time next year when 7th generation iphone comes out, you will be paying the $350 ETF-$10/month with Verizon to switch back to ATT to get the subsidized pricing again.

So let's do the math.
ATT ETF $325- $10/month (11 months). 325-110 equals $225 ETF plus $199 subsidized pricing with Verizon plus $35 new line activation. So $225 ETF plus $199 plus $35 so around $460 to switch to Verizon which has 2GB data limits for $30.

You can still get tiered Verizon minutes plans and texts if individual lines. All family lines for NEW customers have to switch to mobile sharing..

But if you pay ATT the $450 partial upgrade plus $36 upgrade fee. So your costs to partially upgrade with ATT is $486 vs. spending $460 for new service with Verizon.

Wow a $26 savings!! Plus you may be responsible for pro-rated charges with ATT for leaving and ATT often times does not refund you back the pro-rated charges. Say you ATT bill ends September 17th. You get new iPhone with Verizon on Sept 21st. You basically end up paying ATT for entire Sept 17-October 16 billing cycle PLUS new service with Verizon.

Think about that.

I have thought about it. Before, the only thing keeping me at AT&T was the ETF. Their service is terribad. If the cost is the same I would leave. That $26 is icing on the cake.

I have both ATT and Verizon.

If you are a big talker, just remember CDMA voice quality sounds very robotic vs. true WCDMA voice.

Otherwise, good luck with whatever decision you make. If Verizon service is superior than by all means switch.

Passive aggressive?

I often don't pay for things outright just because the froogle person in me KNOWS if there's a way to get something cheaper, then I don't like paying retail. Sure as hell doesn't mean I can't afford it. I never pay for games at retail $60, b/c I know there are ways around to get them cheaper. Just like in OP's case there are other ways to get the iPhone cheaper. No entitlement issues there, just trying to figure out ways to save money.

I want to start doing this. I just started with Verizon. Should I add a line when im ready to buy the new phone or add it now? I want to know how this works. thanks

Works the same way for me the other way. VZW has no early upgrade pricing, so I would pay $649.99 for an 16GB iPhone 5 with them, instead of $399.99 ($199.99 + $200.00 VZW ETF) to port to AT&T. I don't understand why they take so little off the ETF each month. It's still like $180 ETF when you are on the verge of getting a fully discounted upgrade. Or why they don't bank you so much of a discount toward your next upgrade for each month of your contract you fulfill.

The level of arrogance and stupid on this board knows no bounds. Now, back to work with you, those burgers are getting cold!

Yes, you are arrogant and stupid for thinking that I flip burgers and you are arrogant and stupid for thinking that flipping burgers is any less honorable a job to provide for a family than whatever you do.

Wow, I can't remember the last time someone has admitted publicly that they are arrogant and stupid. Thanks for the honesty groupersandwich!!

Yes, it's true. People actually have to fulfill the 24mo. contract they signed on the line.

If only Verizon was held to the same standard

Now, back to work with you, those burgers are getting cold!

To start with, I am an attorney.

But with that said, what exactly is the matter with making burgers?

It's a job. I applaud someone, anyone for working this job in today's economy. You speak of "stupid" yet then mock someone for working at a job that people like you look down upon and laugh at.

Yes, I agree....there is a lot of "stupid" on this forum
