Once you pay for your phone Verizon unlocks it - what's the big deal. If that's too difficult then don't buy directly from Verizon.

Verizon hasn't said that will be the case. they haven't said how long it will take before they unlock once you ask, whether it will automatically happen or whether you need to request it, etc. They haven't said it can happen right after purchase, and declined to say whether you will have to own the phone for 60 days or some other period before they will unlock.

I live in NYC and, from what I hear, T-Mobile is great here (I'm on AT&T). However, drive 30 miles north of the city and you're greeted with "No Service". My monthly bill for two unlimited lines, with a 15% FAN discount, is about the same as what I'd be paying for the same service on T-Mobile.
Ya I work in A facility outside of town. I have cricketwireless which runs on at&t and I have signal but most people with sprint and tmo are out of luck. Lol people at work say you have to stand at a certain spot to get signal if your.

Tmo subsidiary have really good deals and I would love to go to them but can’t. They bought wireless spectrum that will let them extend their range in buildings and rural areas so hopefully in a year or two it'll improve.

As a Verizon customer that is happy with the service, and getting an excellent discount through work, I am glad to see this. I am hopeful that the waiting period will be 90 days or less, and this should accomplish exactly what they're stating. When I worked at the Apple Store a few years back, scalpers lined up every day to buy as many Verizon models as we would sell, just to ship them overseas. This should help a lot more Verizon customers get the phones they want, and not have so many non-verizon users trying to take them to other networks.

This comment has to much astroturf the NFL wants to sign a contract with you.

Had you read my post you’d see I was trying to make a point. Watch them lock these phones for years and years requiring a difficult process to unlock. But it’s ok. Apparently lots of not reading happening today!

I’ve seen a few good stores but a lot of bad ones. Happier now dealing with just Apple.
While I typically recommend that people just go through Apple for iPhones, I've bought my last 4 iPhones through Verizon to take advantage of deals. That said, if Verizon makes me jump through hoops to unlock phones going forward, (and yes I'm aware the other carriers already do this, but I liked how Verizon were unlocked out of the box) I will just deal directly with Apple. Although, my experience with Verizon stores has been much better than yours.

I am a Verizon customer and this is not good for the customer. I hope that the FCC steps in and stops them. All phones should be sold unlocked.
You mean the same FCC that just gave all of the power to telecommunications providers? Yeah..... no.

I’m not happy about this but if they automatically unlock it without the customer having to go out of their way within 60 days of the phone purchase then I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

You must work in a pretty dodgy area if stores are getting robbed that often. In the last 6 years of working in customer facing jobs, I've experienced one shoplifter in a store I worked at and have heard of thefts from maybe 2 other stores in the area.
Nope. It just happens. I work in a very highly populated area. When I was working in Texas, it didn't happen near as much. Also, did your store have merchandise worth thousands of dollars for one item? I'd say invenetory itself is in the hundreds of thousands.

Also, I just realized you're in the UK....WAY different culture there. hahaha. But I love it! When travelling overseas in Europe I had to reassure my parents it was safer there than in the States. hahaha.

And this is the reason I have NOT changed or renewed my plan with AT&T since the first iPhone. Grandfathered unlimited data plan, never been throttled at least that I can tell and it works. Have Horizon on my tablet for tethering it was cheaper at the time and there signal is horrible, one day 5 bars, next day 3 bars same location and same weather pattern.

Don't you only get 2G then? I'm surprised they didn't "auto upgrade" your plan (or force you to do so) when activating a new device.

Some of the cameras and tv's we stocked would have been over $1000 but they are a fair bit bigger than a smartphone. Also I agree with you on culture. I've travelled to the US 4 times and I definitely wouldn't want to stick around areas that are not that friendly of tourists. Feels iffy when your away from the tourist hotspots. I've never had the same issue travelling in Europe.

Buh-bye, anti-net neutrality Verizon. When a payoff from another carrier offer zeros out our iPhone Xs payments, we are out of there.

And therein lies the problem.

I've pretty much cycled through all the carriers. Moving to another carrier from Verizon would be a step down IMO, no matter who they are and what they offer.

Free service for two years? Maybe then.

That's cute, but not really a response to anything I said. I know, being a happy Verizon customer is not a "popular" viewpoint around here, but I get a good discount through work, and they simply have the best network in Oregon.

Moved my whole family off of Verizon to T-Mobile (two 55+ year old parents with the two unlimited lines for $60 total with autopay) and my sister and I are on MetroPCS unlimited single lines ($60 a month for me for 50GB data + 15GB of hot spot data & $50 unlimited smartphone data for her line).

Was with Verizon since they were Airtouch Cellular. Most greedy company I've ever done business with. I'm so happy I've left them.

"Off of"?

Try "From", far better grammar.

The same competitor also has a fraction of Verizon's coverage, hence the better rates.

Maybe or maybe not true if you live in the boonies but in a metro T-Mobile is faster and less greedy than Verizon GUDP premium data. Verizon was good in 2011 but in 2018 T-Mobile is better.

There are areas I don't like going around either. haha. It's pretty scary in some places. I lived in the Middle East for three years in what the locals called the "ghetto" of Amman, and I never had any issues or felt threatened in any way. But here in California...not so much.

I was also thinking last night about what someone said, not sure if it was you, about it being on TV if it happened. Here in the States, school shootings aren't even on TV anymore. It's sad to live here now. :(

I live in NYC and am on AT&T, so I have no horse in this race. However, during a trip to the Renaissance Faire (about 30-40 miles north of Manhattan) last summer, I had 3 bars of LTE, whereas one of my friends who has T-Mobile had no service. Personally, I couldn’t care less about data speeds if the coverage is lacking.

Non-congested speed is just as important as reception. I've personally tried AT&T wireless in the same spot and have good reception but terrible congestion that made the speed slower than dial-up so useless for streaming, browsing, navigation, VOIP, etc.

Can’t speak for t-mobile but in my area Verizon has been upping their game.

I completely agree. However, if there’s no reception at all, speed is a moot point. Here’s a quick speed test I did on AT&T a couple of hours ago at a busy subway station in Brooklyn. My typical speeds vary between 15Mbps and as high as 80Mbps. I’ll take a consistent 15Mbps with good coverage, rather than sporadic bursts of 100Mbps.

That's expected if you're connected to a non-congested small cell out in the boonies that no one else is on. Very rare in a metro when I had Verizon. I could've survived with the slower metro speed but followed through with dumping Verizon after they raised the price on top of throttling streaming then charging extra to unthrottle. I'm no fanboy except to my wallet and good honest products and services.

Understand what you’re saying, but this was in the crowded ‘burbs.

It's time for Apple (and everybody else) to remove carrier locking capabilities from phones.

It never should have existed in the first place. But now that phones aren't actually subsidized at all any more, the capability should be gone from future phone firmware.
