Verizon Offers Double the Data for 'MORE Everything' Plans

To me, it's sounding like folks in the EU don't do a lot of traveling out of their country.

And you would be correct. Some people do travel for holidays (but I'm not even sure that's the majority). And even for holidays, most people will stick to the couple of countries they're used to. But it remains an exception to change country for work.
You have to understand that Europe is not the USA. We still have different language, different cultures, different banking systems. For instance, corporate culture is very country specific - I could have a similar corporate cultural shock just working at one hour plane distance from home than you would by moving from the Middle West to California - well, probably even more so, because employment laws and syndicates are very different from one country to another.

I'm not sure how I could live over there and not take long weekends all over the EU anytime I could... so much awesome history, culture and geography!

Well, the thing is that is applies to each country too... For instance, without leaving my city, I can go watch some 2000 year old ruins or daring modern architecture, I can eat food from literally hundreds of culture, I can go to a farmer market or to the Chinese or Arabic market, I can go have a tea at the Mosque or visit a thousand year old cathedral, I can visit a hundred of museums...
Likewise, I can remain in my country and go to the sea, the mountain or the country, experience the whole range of climates between mediterranean, continental or semi-nordic.

As you said, we do have awesome history and culture. As a result, any country in Europe is the product of several cultures and sometimes even several languages. European countries are very dense and diverse, so the need to travel abroad is probably less as it takes a long while to know one's own country...

As for roaming, the workaround when it's just for holidays is just to have unlocked phones and to buy a prepaid plan when you're abroad... When people stay abroad for work for a significant while, they will just change for a plan in their new country.

Oh wow that seems steep to me! I pay £19/mo for unlimited calls and texts, and 10gb of 4G internet, that's what, $30?. It's only a tiny bit more a month for a lot more data but I don't need that much.

Haha, what! Can't he tell the difference? I drink a bunch of waters and they all taste different to me. Tap water is smooth and mildly tangy, filtered tap water is bland, Volvic is real smooth (my fave), Buxton is chalky, Strathmore is very chalky... etc!

Not only is MacRumors' headline misleading, what's almost as misleading is that table from Verizon. It's like, "look how cheap it would be to share all this data across your family. Now, if they want to be part of it, each family member has to shell out an additional $40 per line per month to get it."

It's not a $40 payment for everyone and for all devices.

Just a heads up for those of you trying to make the switch.. We are currently on the 14gb plan which wasn't part of the promotion. So yesterday I called and switched to the 16gb plan and was told the double the data promotion would take effect automatically if you were already enrolled in one of the participating plans. This was not correct information.

I viewed my online account and there was no change. I called vzw three times this morning.. the first rep knew nothing about it. Asked me where I saw the promotion. I hung up and called back. The second lady answered and I just knew she wasn't going to be able to help me so I hung up and called back again. Finally got someone who wasn't very knowledgeable about it but did his research and made the change for me.

The short answer is no, you are not automatically switched. You have to call and hope you get someone who has some idea of what you are talking about.

People just don't get it, do they. If the water is from a system that monitors the quality continuously, then it should not be a problem.

That isn't what I said. Roaming fees charge you a premium for using cellular service in a different country. When the EU abolishes roaming fees all it means is that the cost to the user will be the same across other member states compared to their own.

This doesn't mean that a contract tariff in the home country will automatically work in another EU country. It means that if a call costs, say, 10p per minute in Britain and you are a British cellular customer, then visit France for instance, that call must still be no more than 10p per minute.

To make it more of an apples to apples price comparison, does there not exist today a plan in your country that allows you to travel over the EU and use your minutes/data without roaming fees? We could compare the price of that to one of these AT&T/Verizon/T-Mobile/Sprint plans.

Yes. Almost all of the major carriers here offer plans where your minutes and texts can be used abroad. Data is not usually included, but some still offer it as an additional charge.

For instance, Three offer a inclusive "Feel at Home" service whereby all of their plans, including data, can be used across 16 different countries at no extra charge.

With this service, you are limited to 25GB of roaming data if you already have an unlimited data plan. The lowest price unlimited data plan on Three is £15 per month with a 12 month contract. That's about $25 per month for unlimited domestic data that also includes 25GB of roaming data.

Once again though, the average customer is not going to be travelling to a different country, just like the average American is not normally going to be travelling out of state every day.

Unfortunately in the US, AFAIK even the smaller regional carriers do not offer super-cheap plans that only work in the geographic area of "one state", so it'd be hard to compare the price of any US plan directly to a EU "one-country" plan.

Of course they don't, because the U.S. is one country. The fact that European cellular service is still cheaper even with roaming proves that it is more expensive in North America. Probably because you are more than willing to continue paying the higher prices. That, and the fact that there is practically no competition in the U.S. market.

I did OK with all the promotions, but it still cost real money. I'm one of these rural people without other broadband options so it does help. Verizon is only cell signal around, I get LTE but just barely so DL approx 5-10 MB/sec depending on time of day, etc

Agreed. I got switched into the 30GB this morning, plus the 1GB per new device promotion should give me another 5 GB of data. Last month my family used about 16GB of data so this new plan is a good new for me.

One doesn't necessarily mean the other. They can respond to a promotion to deal with the money and subscriber side of things, and still have to deal with congestion issues when and where they arise.

My extended family (all 6 of us) have iPhones, and we share 4GB of data per month. We have never gone over. Our bill is $320 per month.

I guess we get no deal. We need to spend $400 to get a deal. Got it.

On the one hand, I could just wait until she is a teen before getting her a phone (if we even have phone-type devices by then), but I also don't want to limit her potential development ans social skills relative to her peers. I've always tended to be the type to use "always connected internet" to my advantage by learning and reading a ton. It could be the same for her, or the worst decision I've ever made by getting her hooked on posting selfies and becoming a self absorbed, Facebook loving drama queen. Parenting freaks me out.

Call Verizon if you want one of these plans

I spoke to Verizon today and these plans do not upgrade automatically. They doubled my data today once I called in but was told that if I hadn't called in it wouldn't have happened automatically. Also, you have to get it doubled before EOM to be grandfathered in.

Following in the footsteps of AT&T and Sprint, Verizon today announced a promotion to expand the amount data available through its MORE Everything plans.

Customers on the 12GB plan will now get 15GB of data for the same $110 per month, while customers on the 16GB plan will now get 30GB of data for $130. Verizon has increased available data across the board, delivering up to double the data for consumers at no additional cost.

Customers will be able to get the expanded MORE Everything plans beginning on October 2, with customers able to sign up through October 31.

Does anyone know if this applies to the 4GB Share plan or if this is only on "More Everything" plans that are 12GB and up? I have two iPads, soon to be three, on a 4GB plan. If they change that plan to 6GB or more with no extra charge, then I won't spend more for more data to accommodate the third iPad.

It's just mind-boggling how overpriced mobile data is. Period. When do you think that bubble will burst? Remember when texts used to be like $0.50? I know that the cost on texting is essentially zero since it piggybacks on the tower ping, but there's got to be a point where data becomes reasonable.

Verizon is a despicable, evil company for sure (for trying to destroy the Internet by getting rid of net neutrality) but it's mobile data prices are not as bad as prices in some countries.

Do you know how mind-bogglingly expensive it is to build advanced cell towers every few miles? It is expensive for a reason. Verizon is a despicable, evil company for sure (for trying to destroy the Internet by getting rid of net neutrality) but it's mobile data prices are not as bad as prices in some countries.

I almost jumped at converting most or all of my UL data lines to an ME plan. I'm glad I waited. I also noted that Cricket, Sprint, ATTWS (which we use), and then VZW (which we use), all doubled up on certain data plans.

I don't have any insider information, but I suspect that the carriers are quite aware of what might be discussed (and passed) in a Report and Order on 10/17 at the next FCC's open meeting - usage of distributed antenna systems and small cell networks. If these systems are permitted, IMO the carriers will be all over it to fill in holes and enhance their networks at a much lower cost than current costs per tower/antenna assembly. We'll know more in a few weeks or less - and, who knows, maybe T-Mo and Sprint will actually work everywhere sooner, rather than later...

They probably could have not offered any increase for the 12 GB and started them at 15 GB and up. In that sense getting an extra 3 GB for free essentially is still pretty good considering it could have easily stayed at 12 GB. (And honestly, the way they did it, we can be frustrated that 10 GB didn't get any bump at all, not even to let's say 12 GB.)
