1/5 coverage = not really a problem in the cities unless you live out on the countryside.

3x as many dropped calls = widely exaggerated. dropped calls are very rare.

I live in Orange County, CA. I get 3G coverage just about everywhere. I just drove through the dessert 340 miles each way; I had 3G coverage the whole way with the exception of a small strip of highway (about 5 miles).

BUT I have close to 75% or higher call drop rate. Almost every call I make or receive gets dropped. But oddly enough, if I call back, it almost never drops the second time. Almost sounds intentional -- if it is important enough they'll call back then we won't drop them (the drop happens almost always at the 2 minute mark).

...I'm just sayin'...

I think it's awesome how Verizon says they have the network issue that AT&T has "covered." All they're doing is limited people's bandwidth. Also, I read that Verizon will not allow multitasking on the network. So you can't check your email, surf the internet, or text while you're on the phone. I'd rather have the "lack of service" and have more features.

I am assuming you are referring to the inability to be able to use data while in a call?

its not by verizons choice....its because they are using CDMA rather than UMTS/GSM

Once the top 5% are gone, there is no need for throttling anymore. And I very much doubt that the go exactly by some percentage mark, but throttling will happen when their network reaches its capacity limits. If suddenly _everybody_ would try to download 50 GB per month then 100% of users would be throttled. They will be throttled anyway, even without any policy, because the network just couldn't handle it.

You should use some common sense and think about the purpose of throttling: Each customer produces a certain amount of revenue, and each customer produces a certain amount of cost. As long as you as a customer produce less cost than revenue, you will be fine. There is no purpose in throttling your access because they lose money if you leave. If you reach the range where you cost more than you pay, they will want you to leave.

You forget another main reason to throttle, besides revenue per customer. And that is for the carrier to be able to accomodate more and more customers on their network without cost of increasing bandwidth thereby increasing their margin. Communism works. We all know that. You get only one loaf of bread no more like everybody else. Doesn't matter if you are a 280 lbs 6' 4" hulk compared to the other guy in line who is 5' 9" at 150 lbs. Both get one loaf of bread.

wow. I think you maybe reading too much in to this. This is direct response to data abusers. You will not be affected as an average user. Optimaisation is a broad action. By throttling the service of the 5% the network runs better, hence network optimisation

I don't care about the throttling. That's fine. It's the compression of images/video that I'm saying no to.

I have no problem with this at all. However, it is a little sneaky that they chose to put it in the fine print right before the iPhone.

God, I wish I could "like" posts. Ha ha

Anyway, I'm all for people switching to Verizon. Please, SWITCH! I'm really looking forward to better voice connections when half of the iPhone users in my city switch over. I'll keep my fast data and rollover minutes, Thank you very much! Being able to text using google voice while talking on the phone to someone else is priceless.

I like the idea of Verizon throttling the top 5% as long as they are able to let everyone have unlimited data that way. If they switch to tiered pricing later it wouldn't seem fair anymore. That data optimization crap is yet another reason I wouldn't want to switch to Verizon myself. I wonder what that would do to apps like Netflix?

Awesome!
Verizon and Apple working hard to give the user the best experience.
If you don't like it, take a hike and try your luck with CrapT&T. :D

What's verizon's new ad campaign going to be.. "America's slowest network, now even slower! Thanks to our data throttling you can have your data even slower than before! At no extra charge!"

... but I thought Verizon's network could handle ANYTHING. It just keeps getting worse for Verizon fans. Years of whining and complaining and I bet most Americans will stick with AT&T due to all the cons of Verison.

Basically unless you use your iPhone more for talking than you do data, (I don't, and don't know anyone who does), then AT&T is the better choice.

+1. That is what I like about the iPhone getting on multiple networks. All the dirty laundry gets out there for all to see. For my needs, AT&T is better. Now they have a network to handle the drop call complainers and another to deal with multitasking the internet with a phone call.

Oh man the trolls are really out in force in this thread.

Anyways, makes sense to me to preserve the network for everyone. It does get old that these plans are being marketed as unlimited, though.

Oh yeah, it's worked out great so far. Let's take a look:

Verizon crippled the iPhone and took away:

  • Fast network access
  • voice and data multitasking
  • decent international coverage
  • rollover minutes
  • free wifi at the 'popular' chains

Verizon added:

  • unprecedented, unpredictable, unwarranted data throttling
  • compression of my data (pictures) which will ruin their resolution
  • higher prices points

Oh yes....this is a great customer experience! :D

Its interesting to see so many people stating that that the throttling policy is ok, I guess its the honeymoon period. That warm and fuzzy feeling will quickly be displaced with anger and whining once vzw starts throttling the content

In another month or two, we'll be seeing a number of threads complaining about VZW and their throttling tactics.

That's not a really big deal and probably wouldn't affect me.

If Verizon's speed is more reliable than AT&T's, I think I would prefer getting 1 megabit everywhere on Verizon to getting 3 megabits in some places but 0.3 megabits in many places including my neighborhood on AT&T.

so every review that came out last night LIED about dropping calls? Conspiracy...

dont care to read them really. i just know that since june ive only had a handful of dropped calls. i dont think its luck, its just ppl exaggerating about the dropped calls they get on ATT.

So according to some reviews Verizon's data is ~63% slower then ATT on downloads already, why would they need to throttle more. That said, this is still preferable to charging more or cutting you off after so much. I would prefer if instead of just 5% they said after xGB
