It is word play. They say you have unlimited data. They say they have the fastest/a fast network. They imply unlimited at the fast speeds in their ads. You have to figure out on your own that they are not connected.

That's a stretch. It's also not how it works despite you and others wanting it to work that way.

Yes, the use of the term "unlimited" is false advertising. It doesn't matter that they have a bunch of micro-text explaining that unlimited really doesn't mean unlimited.

No, it means unlimited. As in start a data connection and send data at 12:00am on 1/1 and you will still have a data connection at 11:59pm on 1/31. They make no guarantees on speed but you can consume all the data you can consume without charges throughout your billing period.

Whining about speeds and whatnot won't change anything as you are not paying for guaranteed speeds.

Now what Verizon did to the Fire Department was extremely wrong and they should face as much wrath as possible.

Don't you think that "data cap" might be a clue-bat?

I am not saying they don't tell you there is a throttle speed. I am just saying that they don't do enough to clarify what you are really paying for. Listen to the videos. They never say data cap.

Not even a little bit of a stretch. It's what they do. Listen to their ads. They never say data cap. Thomas Middleditch makes it sound like you will have reliable unlimited data to stream whatever you want. But that's not what they sell is it? It's word play, and adding tiny text or disclaimers on their website doesn't change that fact.

Here are two of them where they never say anything about caps:

I am paying for unlimited data and the best streaming service. If they throttle speeds then they can't claim the later.

Boohoo, you have to do some work and actually read the fine print to know what you signed up for. Nothing in life is served on a gold platter to you.

You get reliable, unlimited data at a throttled speed. It is still unlimited. Might not be "usable" in your terms, but it is still unlimited. You can use 40GB at over your 22GB and Verizon will never stop you. Hell, you could use a 1000GB after the 22GB - seems unlimited to me. As I have said over and over, this is an unlimited plan. Not "unlimited LTE".

Allowing companies to advertise "unlimited" where they get to redefine that word however they like is FRAUD, plain and simple. It always has been, and this is not a net neutrality issue -- it's a false advertising one.

I don't get how this isn't a blatantly obvious consumer protection.

Hey Verizon, this is what you wrote:

" Under this plan, users get an unlimited amount of data, but speeds are reduced when they exceed their allotment until the next billing cycle."

What a bunch of fracking double-speak. The ALLOTMENT is for UNLIMITED data. When the data allotment is UNLIMITED how the frack do you EXCEED it? How do you exceed UNLIMITED?

What a bunch of horse manure. I wish Apple would use its considerable resources to create its OWN mobile network and tell these jokers to stick it where the sun don't shine.

Nope. The ALLOTMENT is whatever the DATA CAP is for a particular plan. The more expensive the plan, the more non-throttled data (allotment) one gets. Simple, really.

Verizon representatives confirmed the throttling, but, rather than restoring us to an essential data transfer speed, they indicated that County Fire would have to switch to a new data plan at more than twice the cost, and they would only remove throttling after we contacted the Department that handles billing and switched to the new data plan.

Why is this Verizon’s fault?

This has absolutely nothing to do with Trump, net neutrality, or politics at all. Nothing.

They are still a customer of Verizon, just like any other customer. If they use up all of their data, their speeds get throttled, just like any other customer. Also just like every other carrier.

You don’t have to like it. I certainly don’t. I’ve always hated this fake unlimited thing (which went into effect during net neutrality, by the way). But you can’t get upset about a company enforcing their very plainly-worded policies.

Luckily they apparently do get exceptions for emergency services. They just had an idiot working that day, that’s all.

If data is to be throttled, what is a reasonable minimum speed? The fire department was saying their data was throttled to slower than dialup.

Maybe their policy should be not to throttle the emergency services ever, not just when they are called and begged.

Or emergencies services could just get on a plan that would cover this mess. I work at cell carrier and I get sick of people bitching about their service when they are the one's that pick the lower tiered unlimited plan. Even when I didn't work for my current employer I knew I wanted the most data at the fastest speed so I paid, you get what you pay for.

Come on, when AT&T was a monopoly, at least they were regulated enough that from the '20s on, the phone system actually worked at the maximum capacity it was capable of. These bastards not only get to run the pipes, but they want the content as well. And when technology is rapidly making truly unlimited connectivity possible, they're pricing it by the bit. Dishonest monopolists.

Glad I left Verizon. Emergency officials should have NO THROTTLING whatsoever. I like how Verizon has 3 “unlimited plans” unlimited should be unlimited.

What are you talking about? I’m sure if there was a truly unlimited plan the fire department would’ve had it. But as we all know none of the carriers have truly unlimited plans. Not anymore anyway.

Introducing the unlimited health care plan, where you have unlimited use of our surgeon!

*Unlimited use of surgeon will include 3 hours of surgery. Any surgery after the allotted time will result in the surgeon's hands will be tied behind his/her back.

Let me know when you find a mobile carrier that does not throttle after a certain data amount. I will be here waiting. T-Mobile? Check. Verizon? Check. AT&T? Check. Sprint? Check.

Your example is horrible. Because you would just go to the next surgeon.

the verizon shill ajit pai is a trump appointee who is a champion of killing net-neutrality. it's no surprise evil company like verizon that overcharges but provides little in return.

i was on this fire. and no fire engine needed wifi to do any life/property saving. this was the firefighters watching homes being bored out of their mind on their phones....

wifi has NEVER saved anyones life/limb or property.

You do not seem to know much about modern firefighting. WiFi is used at many fires. The old plan was to just pour water on it and sooner or later it would go out.

Fire departments now plan fire response. They scout businesses and areas to know what they will face, if there is a fire. They track weather. Which way is this wild fire likely to go? What are the dangers of the fire going that way? Is there a better path? There’s also coordination between departments.

WiFi has saved countless lives in firefighting.
