Maybe all the employees can raise $199 for the employer to buy a decent wireless router? :) Maybe a bake sale...or a We-Still-Don't-Have-WIFI-And-It's-Almost-2013 Fundraiser? :)

She's a NYC employee. Suprise, a city department is behind the times. But I'll pass your message to Mayor Bloomberg.

I hate that AT&T makes us use their new mobile share plan to use this feature and they act like the new share plans are so much better for us. We're sticking with AT&T though I guess. LTE seems quick in San Diego area.

ATT acts like the new share plans are better for consumers? How? Clearly, when they don't allow grandfathered plans to tether or use FT it's b/c they know they need to give consumers a reason to switch to the worse for most, more expensive share plan. It's not enough reason for me to dump unlimited -- I could not care less about tethering or FT, but for some it could be an incentive.

But the wider question is would you rather ATT just kill the "unlimited" plan altogether, because they are in their right to do that the second you get a new phone. People need to stop B*ing. LTE roll out costs $$ and ATT has to recoup that cost somewhere.

If you don't like it switch to Sprint. You'll get unlimited everything as long as you are in a major city. Or you can switch to VZW which is even more expensive on most plans than ATT.

I wonder if all these people whining realize that Skype can do video chatting just fine, on ALL devices going all the way back to iOS 4 (even devices without cameras in receive only), and it's cross platform so you can video chat with your friends on PCs and Macs running OS X pre-Mountain Lion and Android phones as well?

Oh wait, they probably don't. Let's not tell them because their whining is freaking hilarious. :)

So what's the catch Verizon?

I think it's because you're already forced into the share everything plan with verizon....where at&t you can keep you're unlimited plan w/out facetime over cellular or you can switch to their mobile share plan and have the facetime over cellular.

You realize that many (most?) companies regularly and actively block non-corporate content like video chat, youtube, pandora, etc. on their networks?

1)I think my post was pretty clear it was a bit of a joke

2)Yes, many companies do block/filter stuff...especially bandwidth hogging stuff like streaming video. It also depends on the size of the company, # of offices, # of people, # of people who may want those services, etc. FT doesn't hog anywhere near as much bandwidth as the 720p or higher video clips on Youtube and other sites.

But anyway, yes, I am aware.

I'm not buying the iPhone 5. But when the time does come to get a new iPhone, my plan will be to tell AT&T to stick it where the sun doesn't shine and switch to Verizon.

Mark

didn't Verizon Drop the unlimited and FORCE everyone to newer and sometimes more expensive plans?

granted you can use Facetime over Wifi...just like AT&T, once you make the switch that Verizon FORCED you to make already.

I'd have to get my parents, GF etc to sign up for Skype and then teach them how to use a new program - where as they already have iPhones and know how to use it.

AT&T = BULL$H*T

I hope SOMEONE can start a protest for AT&T being so freaking greedy
I mean if their price was lower it would be fine but they are overpriced and they want to charge you for many things and even if you don't use them they would charge you and they WILL CHARGE PEOPLE TWICE
for something they are already paying for. Like that's just messed up
I hope someone understands this so at least they can do something about this corruption. We the Good people have to stop the greedy selfish people.

Why don't you start a protest? By not buying AT&T phones. They understand money, so don't give it to them.

Novel concept, AMIRITE?

I could care less what AT&T does.
I have 25% off my bill from my employer & $30/mo off for another 5 months (free family messaging)

When my $30/mo promo expires, Ill call again and get my discount again.

Im currently on a 700 minute family plan
2 iPhones
mine = unlimited data & isnurance
mom = 2gb data

I pay $102/mo, including taxes.
Who cares what AT&T says. I have a cheap bill and when the jailbreak comes out, Ill be facetiming on 3g just like I did on my iPhone 4s (which my mother now uses)

Maybe if i'm still grandfathered in I can use iPhone over cell with AT&T on the iPhone 10.

Technically they didn't force people off unlimited. You can keep your unlimited plans, but you don't get subsidized pricing on your phone.

how are you getting the free family messaging?

If you're on a 700 minute family plan or higher, you get free unlimited messaging.

Gotta agree with you there....this was a much bigger deal when facetime was first introduced. I'll never use anyway. If I need to videochat, the Skype app works like a charm.

doesnt the Syype app cost to video chat?

They play the odds, just like every other carrier. They calculate the lost customers based on facetime over cellular over cost savings on not having to handle the bandwidth on the unlimited plan. They see that the amount of customers that makes facetime over cellular/unlimited data as a deal breaker (seeing as Sprint is the only carrier option who has both if they decide to jump ship) will more than be covered by the bandwidth savings not having to support the people who are on unlimited and use facetime.

In reality, the vast majority of people don't care about facetime, and those who do will not make it a deal breaker, simply because they would have to go to Sprint's inferior network in order to have facetime and unlimited data.

I contacted AT&T support just now and I asked whether having the Unlimited Data Plan for iPhone 4S would allow me to used FT over cellular. I asked this in many different ways so as to be sure to get a crystal clear understanding. No matter how I asked the question, the representative always replied in the affirmative. According to this person we will NOT need to change our plans to a mobile share plan to support FT over cellular.

If this is the case, then the AT&T comment might have been a slight misstatement, and likely meant "data plan" in general.

Single instance, so take it for what’s its worth.

I don't ever believe what AT&T support has to say. THEY ARE NEVER RIGHT.

I'd take AT&T official statement release over what a lowly customer service employee says.

Their statement was...

"AT&T will offer FaceTime over Cellular as an added benefit of our new Mobile Share data plans, which were created to meet customers' growing data needs at a great value. With Mobile Share, the more data you use, the more you save. FaceTime will continue to be available over Wi-Fi for all our customers."

Pretty clear, you want FaceTime over Cellular, you need a shared plan, otherwise, you're on WiFi only.

Dear AT&T: I have an individual plan, why do I need a shared data plan to use FaceTime over 3G if I have an INDIVIDUAL plan? Who would you suggest that I SHARE my data with, myself?
