I have a iP4 and 4S on verizon running iOS6 GM, both phones have the setting for use facetime over cellular enabled.

Interesting since the iP4 is not technically supported (according to Apple's website). I hope this is true; otherwise, I am not sure that there is much to offer iP4 users. Most 'features' are not supported on the iP4 :(

Dear AT&T: I have an individual plan, why do I need a shared data plan to use FaceTime over 3G if I have an INDIVIDUAL plan? Who would you suggest that I SHARE my data with, myself?

The sharing plan is not only about phones, it's about devices. You have the option to add devices or add a mobile hotspot to the shared plan, which will share your data allowance.

So, basically, AT&T wants me to sign up for something I don't need. I don't have a laptop and my Ipad is Verizon, since AT&T hasn't bothered to roll out LTE in my area (Philadelphia). It would make more sense if they limited FaceTime over 3G to people that do not have unlimited data. That's effectively what they did with tethering. But to tell people that they need a shared data plan, even if they have no need to share is preposterous.

I know people threaten to leave ATT over a policy all the time, but this Facetime only on the shared plans was enough to make me act on that threat.

LOL... Everyone threatens, some leave, and most go back to AT&T after tasting Verizon.

I've got three kids... used it twice when it came out first and haven't since. If I want to talk to my kids, I go see them.

Its a good thing everyone is exactly like you and has the option to go see people in person all the time.

Oh. Wait. They aren't and they don't.

My parents used it to talk to my brother while he was living half way across the country. I used it to talk to them while on vacation...in Japan, half way across the WORLD. Just because YOU don't have a need for it doesn't mean lots of other people don't. Get over yourself.

How is this entire thing even an issue?

Use Skype and be done!

A few more taps isn't going to kill anybody!

since LTE is separate from voice - i wonder if on Verizon you'll be able to do both at the same time

Yeah, I agree. Folks complain all the time about AT&T. I've had nothing but good service from them.
Unfortunately If I upgrade to the i5 I'll have to lose my unlimited data plan. That does stink but I can probably live with it.
I looked at the plans from AT&T and Verizon and the costs are very similar. Nothing there to make me want to move away from AT&T.

One catch is that if you're an iPhone 4 customer with unlimited data, you'll need to upgrade to a new phone (4s or 5) in order to get Facetime over Cellular. In that case you'll either have to pay full price for the phone, or lose your unlimited plan.

Yes, effectively forcing you to pay $25 extra for unlimited data, gotta love them!

Funny

So technically I cant FaceTime on my phone if I have the 5g hotspot plan but I can tether to my IPad or give my friend Internet and they can FaceTime. Makes sense

I'm not buying the iPhone 5. But when the time does come to get a new iPhone, my plan will be to tell AT&T to stick it where the sun doesn't shine and switch to Verizon.

Mark

Suggest you take a good look at the Verizon plans. Cost wise, you're not going to save anything.

Performance is another area, altogether. Personally, I've had great service from AT&T for all the years I've been with them. OTOH, others have had better luck with Verizon.

Man I love Sprint's customer view so much better than AT&T. We don't discriminate over data!!! Heck yes! Does anyone have access to their LTE? Is service really that bad? I'm in So California.

Why can't an iPhone 4 make a FaceTime call over cellular? It was promoted as a feature of the iPhone 4 when it was released (with the caveat that the carriers had to allow it.)

Now that the carriers will allow FaceTime over cellular, Apple says, "Nope, sorry -- 4S and 5 only." I know Apple is big on planned obsolescence, but it's a little insane that a phone that was initially touted as having FaceTime over cellular by Apple will never get it now (thanks to Apple) unless it's jailbroken.

Sorry. I am still learning about all of the ways in which to use the iPhone. Skype is something I will look into--I noticed it in other comments after I posted.

Thanks.

As a single device user, AT&T has given me no choice

Single device users CAN'T sign up for a mobile share plan without purchasing a second device. So if I want to use FaceTime on an non-jailbroken iPhone, I have to switch providers. I can't even pay more for that feature without getting something I don't even remotely need. Smart move AT&T.

Can't upgrade from the 4S to 5 since ATT changed their upgrade eligibility policy. So, I could 1) wait till May to upgrade, 2) Pay $250 + iPhone, or 3) Pay $215 and get out of my contract and go to Verizon.

I'll probably just wait and then get out of my contract.

What I've read is that in areas with LTE coverage, Verizon iPhone 5 handsets will be able to do simultaneous voice/data. In areas without LTE coverage, I've read that the phone will fall back to EV-DO/1X and the phone won't be able to do simultaneous voice/data in those areas.

That all makes sense, but it's just what I've seen others saying. I guess those in Verizon LTE coverage areas who get iPhone 5's will know definitively come September 21st.

If you've been using it already, you've been doing it solely over wifi. Nothing is changing for you then. You can still use it over cellular on every US carrier.

You make it sound like FaceTime is the killer app and there is no other options available.

Incorrect, you can get a single phone on the shared data plans. There is a charge for data then per phone. There isn't a minimum 2 phone requirement.

LTE does allow simultaneous data and voice. If it falls back to the 3G CDMA network while doing this, you'll lose data.

I couldn't do it on ATT's website so I just went to the store near my office and the salesman told me you have to have multiple devices.
