This is dumb... Just received my Verizon ordered iphone. It's carrier locked!!! Checked Verizon's webpage and it states that it doesn't lock any of it's post paid phones, whether its on a device payment plan or not.

Need to have this phone to use another SIM as I travel internationally and frequently use the local SIMs for data. What is going on here?? Verizon tech support has no clue and they're just handing me off to the next person to have me restart the phone... :-(
All of the Verizon phones are now locked for at least 60 days. It has been that way for a while.

Verizon has never locked an iOS device. I’ve bought every single iPhone since the 5 through them on subsidy, installment and outright.

I was always able to pop my Australian SIM in them. The only true world phone iPhones were Verizon.

So if they’ve changed it up with the XS then that’s disappointing. Also makes the dual SIM function useless as if it’s locked to a carrier both SIMs are locked to that carrier.

Hope it’s just an issue related to the other activation issues.
Correction: Verizon had (past tense) never locked LTE devices due to an agreement with the US government when they won the bid of some LTE frequencies. But apparently now they managed to get away from that with the excuse of theft prevention (as if that actually matters). So now we’re back to the old Verizon with locked phones. A bit sad.

I have never understood the built in sim thing - I want dual sim where I can put in one sim from verizon and one from mintsim or att or whatever in any combination I want.
Nobody does. Case in point only a minuscule number of carriers support it. Apple is on their own on this eSIM thing. The worse part is they’re advertising the new iPhones as dual SIM in ALL markets, even in markets where no carriers support the eSIM. It’s quite idiotic.

Okay, I just chatted with a Verizon rep: IF the phone is purchased through Verizon, with Verizon financing (not bought outright paid in full), then the iPhone is carrier locked until it’s paid off. From this I would take it to mean that if the phone was purchased through IUP (any other financing) it *should* be sold unlocked.

Verizon has gone back Sim locking lte devices for a while now..this was a headline months again as they used to not Sim lock any devices..but due to fraud and ppl taking devices on financed accounts and using/selling them with other carriers/countries they made the decision to Sim lock again..

Been in place since February.
I don’t understand the relationship between a financed account and the device needing to be locked. I mean really, even if the person sold the device, he/she is still under contract and has to finish his/her payments. The device should be independent. In Singapore, there are subsidized and financed accounts, but all handsets are unlocked out of the box. No carriers screaming theft/fraud there. It’s just Verizon being Verizon wanting to lock phones.

Sorry, nothing against you here, just expressing my frustration with US carriers.

No iOS device on Verizon has ever been SIM locked. LTE or not. I have them all.

Don’t know about the XS as this thread has two opposing data points.

I have an old free T-Mobile 200 mb sim card from my iPad, and installed it in my Max. The phone is locked, and I paid full price for it. Refused to accept the sim. Place the same sim in my X, and had no issue after turning it on.

Called Verizon on newly purchased iPhone XS (via payment plan on business account). Just receive this afternoon and activated with the verizon sim inserted. Took out and replaced with SIM from ATT (personal) and it came up with invalid SIM.
Rep stated that it takes about 24 hours before you can officially use these new iphones on another carrier, but that it WOULD in fact be unlocked. Waiting and staring at my new iphone XS (that looks strikingly similar to my current iPhone X).
Will update tomorrow if it does in fact unlock at some point. I'm sure all carrier's activation services are gridlocked today.

Thanks. I will be keeping my X for a little while longer until this is cleared up. Traveling internationally next month and won't sell my X until I know for sure.

I just chatted with a rep and he was adamant that financed phones are locked until paid off. I wish they were consistent, one way or the other.

Verizon release new policy about unlocked Verizon's phone. They now start to LOCK DEVICE .

Only full price at Apple Store are unlocked ( doesnt matter what carrier ) . Finance mean LOCK

not according to their website.

Postpay Device Unlocking Policy
  • We do not lock most phones or tablets that are activated with our postpay service either during or after the term of your service contract or Device Payment Plan installment sales agreement.

Your first post shows what you thought the agreement was, and the fine print shows what it actually was. You thought there was no wiggle room, Verizon made sure there was. Verizon has said that this is a move to combat theft, it would be a little weird then to not to use it on a 1K device.

The rest of the world doesn't have to deal with locked phones..but in the us it's a common thing..lesson learned if u want to guarantee an unlocked device but direct from apple Sim free...I understand the frustration.

So how is this going to work with the dual Sim stuff? If Verizon Sim locks it then the double Sim card stuff is completely useless. How can they get away with that people would go bananas ?

Unless I’m not understanding how the double sim thing works but from the way I understand it using the second Sim would be just like inserting a new Sim so how can it be locked to Verizon??!?
