iJon

since i started using a mac 4 years ago, i forgot how to solve various problems that some of my PC friends have been asking me about lately since i never have any problems on my computer ... LOL

Winess to great service at Apple

While I sympathize with the original problem, I witnessed the exact opposite while in an apple store.

I was buying some software at a register while next to me someone came in and asked the cashier for an ipod. She asked what size and he said the 399 one. She then checked to find out his computer type. His answer was not an apple. She asked if he had a firewire port on it, he said, and I quote "Yeah, I have Windows XP."

Needless to say this went on for literally the enitre 5 minutes I was in line as he had no idea what he was talking about.

So before anyone blames apple, realize that not all employees are created equal.

As others have said, just relax, in three days your nephew won't remember that he couldn't use it on christmas day as he will be listening to his music wherever he goes. You got him a great gift!

What a lot of noise

Ya buy something, realize you may need something else to take full advantage of the product (such as "batteries not included") so ya go take care of it. What IS the big deal here?

I couldn't care less if it's Apple's "fault", customer ignorance, what is says on the box or not...breakdowns of communciation happen from time to time...Good Lord, there are people dying every day in this country and around the world for no good reason at all, and to see that someone actually took the time to log onto their computer, go to MacRumors.com, post a message throwing a hissy fit over a cable that can easily be picked up the next day...we are a spoiled nation indeed.

In the great scheme of things, this is truly embarrassing. Happy Holidays, Good Will Towards Men.

Oh, a cunning linguist! Wow.

But say "I am a tourist and I am going to Cupertino", and do you think hes just going to offer up directions?

Now say "I am buying an iPod for my nephew with a Windows PC using USB" and you expect the sales guy to offer a cable up? I wouldn't.

rephrase "I don't have a USB cable and I am buying...". Now he might feel the need to offer one up.

or better yet "Do I need anything else to make this work on a Windows PC with USB???" and I am sure the half-brained minimum wage earning sales guy would offer you one.

How the heck is he supposed to know that you aren't going to Radio Shack to buy the USB cable?

Everyone seems to put all the blame on the sales people for their own mistakes. Obviously DeadlyBreakfast knows the difference between USB and Firewire (based on the statement to the sales guy), therefore should have known to just look at the box.

Enough English debates, although fun and distracting, it doesn't help Deadly's prob. :D

Exactly, enough English debates, this is starting to get carried away...

Haha - nice one! He's got you there iPost, that was a pretty amazing statement. I think I already replied to it once, but after reading it again I just couldn't resist. ;) Good idea io_burn, I think I'll pass it around the office as well...

Bought a digital camera yesterday. Fuji. It came with a USB cable, yes. Bought an iTrust webcam a month or two ago. It came with a USB cable.

iPods are dear enough; it wouldn't kill Apple to ship them with USB cables, and it would be a courtesy to its customers.

But of course, this is the company that charged me three thousand euro for a computer that costs two thousand euro equivalent in the US. And don't say that's all tax.

apple would be wasting so much money if they included the usb cables. I will almost bet you over 80% of iPod users use the firewire cable, that is why they have the usb cable as an extra. it would be like putting a trailer hitch on every truck or suv, it would only be a nice gesture to the few people who would use it, but would waste more money than its worth. your cameras came with usb cables simply becaue thats the only thing they can use im assuming, which isnt that same as the ipods situation, that would be if the ipod came with no cables at all.

iJon

I have a question, I know if you connect an iPod to a Macintosh it will charge via the firewire cable, but is this the same case for a PC? I don't think USB 2.0 is able to charge. If I owned a PC I'd elect to get a firewire card just for the ease of charging and transferring of songs utilizing the cradle or mere firewire cable. Having to use the power adapter seems cumbersome.

that is why apple ships the cable with two usb cables. well its one cable with two usb ends coming out.

iJon

Your right about the 2 cables iJon but your wrong about the USB part. 2 cables one USB one firewire, so you can plug the firewire into the regular firewire adapter for charging from the wall.

Wait, so you're not able to charge just using the firewire cable on a firewire equipped PC?

iPod and USB cable

I can definitely understand your frustration, BUT think it's way out of line. I actually WORK at an Apple Retail Store and you have no idea the frustration stemming from windows users. I cannot count the number of times ppl have no clue what computer they have, no idea what kind of ports, blah blah blah blah....Then they misread the box and discover at home that their 8 year old computer running windows 95 is not compatible with something that came out a year ago. Who knew?
No one I have helped has EVER left the store without the proper cable, but I am sure it's possible. It's the holiday season, ppl are standing ten deep with lists because they research BEFOREHAND what they wanted to buy. Give the guy a break, it happens to everyone. I once bought a usb printer not knowing I needed a USB cable to connect it. My fault? yes. Retail employees fault? Kinda, but he can't read my mind.
Besides, if you want to make sure every apple product will be compatible with your computer, buy a mac. Your frustrations will end there...

Yeah...that's exactly what I meant. Sometimes it helps to know what you have if you want to add to it. Go try to buy a headlight at an auto store without knowing the make, model and year of your car...

Did the salseman at the apple store say anything about buying a cable when I told him I was buying it for use on a windows machine with USB?? Hell no!! I am so freaking pissed right now becuase my nephew cant use the gift I got him until he gets the cable. All the guy had to do was tell me.. I had it wrapped next to the apple store no I neve got a chance to read the fraking box, if it even said anything about it.. I Jobs was here right now I'd punch him in the dam head!!

My god man. That's not a big deal. Did little Timmy start crying when he realized there was no cable?

"YOU RUINED CHRISTMAS!"

Unlikely. There's a simple solution to this; get your ass out to the store and get a cable. If little Timmy had opened the iPod box and found a dildo packed in there instead, yeah, you can get angry.

I think that all printers should come with the necessary cables to hook up to a computer. Its like if apple were to ship Powermacs without the power cable and you had to go buy one. It just diesn't make any sense. (besides the fact it saves Epson a bunch of money)

i agree, but a lot of people i work with prefer many different lenghts of cables so its not that bad, plus they arent that expensive anyways, but thats just an opinion.

I'd love to know what is the version of the salesman, i'm almost sure he never heard about the Windows - USB thing. Besides, if Apple start down that "full (or is it fool?) service" road, pretty soon PC users are going to ask that someone from Apple comes along to install iTunes in their house... but wait, didn't that actually happen with the 20th anniversary Mac? jejeje

2004 is going to be a great year for Apple!
