Hopefully a long way, the nano sims are bad enough if you want to switch to a non official carrier. If you integrated the sim into the hardware then you'd be locked into one carrier unless you want to buy a new phone like you already are with CDMA.

IIRC... Steve was pro integrated SIM b/c, as I understood it, it was OPPOSITE of what you described. Any carrier could flash the internal SIM to their network. Obviously, the networks were completely against it.. but I would love to see somebody like Apple force it through anyway. Reminds me of when BIOS started getting replaced by EFI..

Should macrumours stop calling it the "iphone 5"?

Radio

No, not at all. iPhone 5 has been the unofficial name used by every news outlet, website and tech blogger on the planet since the 4 was released. It's the iPhone 5 until apple announces the official name.

Should Radio stop being redundant by signing hs name to every post?

Wow! those are really small <1.0 mm?!?

I see 0.5 mm on the scale - so the main numbers must be millimetres - rather than centimetres. Given 0.5 mm is the thickness of a mechanical pencil lead those new chips are going to be awfully easy to lose.

Interesting to see that even old fashioned hardware suffers from 'bugs'.

So... the second update makes the first update incorrect but the second update supplies the same information that was supplied with the original post so there really haven't been any updates... right?

I actually learned something new in the video that I really like...The thinner ringer on/off switch. I always thought the current switch was a bit cumbersome. Especially when the phone is in a case. Thinner I think is going to be much better.

Nope, but I am annoyed by repeated childish statements. The first time or two it was funny...but now it's just old.

i haven't frequented the comments enough to get annoyed yet.

I believe it will take a few years for everyone to get steve jobs out of our system. :(

How times change. I remember back in the day when Apple would completely surprise us with each shiny new iProduct. We'd all ooh and aaah at the keynote, and the next day we'd gaze at the innards on some tear-down website.

Now it's all backwards. :)

the internet wasn't nearly as big as it is now IMO

there is so many ways to spread information so it's impossible to control.

the iphone was unexpected.

now be blow a load every time a new part comes out so by the time the phone is announced we are just going to get disappointed.

it's like the 1st time u have sex with a girl. feels amazing but then after a couple times its just not the same.

Not liking the gunmetal so much. Hopefully it will be more hot when the iPhone comes out.

Basically an integrated sim would be the same as CDMA for portability, in theory you can move your device to another carrier, which is what Apple would say when they released it, but in practice almost no carriers allow you to activate a device from another carrier they'd rather have you buy a new one from them.

With the iPhone Apple might get some of their official carriers to go along with it, but good luck getting it on an unofficial carrier if it has an integrated sim.

I am SOOOO looking forward to gunmetal! One of my favorite colors. :D

<snip> which is what Apple would say when they released it <snip>

People keep talking about this as if Apple can just force it on the carriers. Considering that, at least in the EU, there is a governing organization that has to approve that change, Apple can't just force it. They will have to use what the ETSI approves...at least in the EU. And I don't see them making 2 models for a feature like this.

Sim from 3GS cut to fit 5?

So the question is... Other than size are there any real differences with the SIM card? I have a 3GS will I be able to just cut the sim card to make it work in my new 5 when I buy it? or is there some fundamental difference in technology too?

I doubt it will work and there is no "fundamental difference in technology" with the new sim. A sim card is a sim card, the new one is just smaller!!

Oh wow! Another iPhone 5 leak! This is so exciting! So many new things to be revealed!! Wooo hoooooo!!!!

I was thinking you could, but the nano-SIM is 15% thinner, so there's a great possiblity that your SIM card could be too thick to slide in.

In the US, all the carriers provide a SIM with the phone, so no big deal here.
