I thought Dynamic Island was cool. 🏝️

Dyn_Isd_1x1.png
I did too and I like it. I do have some apps that utilize DI and it has been nice. I recently took a Lyft and using the DI on it was cool.

It’s been great overall (owner of 14PM) I did notice that my battery health is down to 91% and it’s not even a year yet. Apple told me 80% or more is considered healthy but I know for a fact older models I owned (I have owned all iPhones) retained battery capacity after a year around 95%.

Those owners with a 14PM and battery life above 97% I would be curious if your charging habits. I never let my phone drain fully, and I rarely keep it charged after reaching 100%. I use fast chargers from Anker and Apple Duo Wireless Charger as my main chargers. I also have a 30W usb c port in my car I frequently use to charge.

Overall it’s a killer phone and the 15 doesn’t seem to offer a lot over this model. I always usually turn my phone in and get the new model but this year (and for the first time ever) I may keep my current version as the iPhone 16 is shaping up to be a killer update.
Mine is at 99%. I charge overnight using the 5w brick. I only charge in the car when using CarPlay. I use my portable charger box outside of home when the battery reaches 20%, which is only when I’m at work. I don't let the battery reach under 20%.

I put my phone on the apple puck around 8-9Pm at night I have it set to optimized battery charging so it finishes before I pick it back up around 7 -8am. I was was 100 percent health til the last two upgrades (16.5 and 16.6) and then it dropped to 99 after 16.5 and around time i upgraded to 16. To 98 percent.

I typically use it maybe quarter of day although today was a bit more and I have observed that folks who are on phone double to triple of me have lower battery health numbers so it seems to be use more than charging habbits

Launch day 14 Pro Max and use MagSafe exclusively for charging. Sitting at 96% battery health.

Of course apple hasn't taken full advantage of the dynamic island yet — it takes time. This responsibility also falls on developers, perhaps even more so.
Dynamic island. It’s more my a penal colony for my pixles.
It’s the worst things since removing the headphone jack. I won’t be upgrading to the 15. My 14PM makes me want to buy a folding Samsung. Tired of the heavy brick.

I had instant regret buying the Max. It's way too freaking heavy. Definitely going smaller next time, even if the camera is lesser, but even that's not a perfect fix. I'm fine compromising on thinness these days, but I'm tired of compromising on lightness. There has to be a better way...
That's interesting. I've gone Pro on every generation but was thinking of the Pro Max this year IF the optical camera zoom is really as rumored and the battery life is noticeably better. It is good to hear from experiences with the Max.

It’s interesting to hear people now bashing dynamic island. I haven’t tried it and thus can’t make an informed opinion, but this time last year it was the hottest new feature in iOS.
Now??? People have been bashing it since day one. It’s a step back, it’s not a feature. It’s not dynamic. It’s a penal colony for pixles. It makes watching content feel terrible, it makes games terrible.
Apple could have just made a very thin notch and no one would have had anything to complain about. It would have been actual progress. But nope, apple wanted under the screen technology before they were able to perfect it and chose to make all of us beta testers and investors for their future vision.
And well, it’s terrible.

Im having the same battery problems (14 pro iOS 16). Less than a year and my battery health is down to 94%. I find myself having to plug it in by 1-2pm with light to moderate use. And this phone does get hot! There are multiple times that I've noticed significant heat with almost no use. And I did my due diligence and made sure it wasn't an app or setting that was contributing (at least from what I could find). I would gladly exchange the dynamic island for whole day battery life.
My Pro is the same, but health is 89%. It does optimized charging etc. Opposite for my wife's 14 Pro (both 1st day) her's is at 100%. I do use mine more though. Both only wired charging.

I’m keeping my 14 Pro, so far no problems in the five months I’ve owned it, 100 percent battery health. Battery life is significantly better than my previous 12 Pro which shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who owned a 12 Pro. I’ve heard battery life on the 14 Pro is worse than the 13 Pro, but for someone who previously owned a 12 Pro…let’s just say it’s better. I usually buy my iPhones between December and March, so possibly in December 2024 or January 2025 I’ll get a 16 Pro…with a periscope lens included finally.

One problem with the d.i. is when two apps are showing up there like music and maps and pressing on music icon up there it brings music forward and the d.i. swaps with the map icons and if you hold too long or press twice it switches back to maps app again. It should swap it after a few seconds instead.

I too like the large form phones.
Year in I’m at 100% battery still.
I’m a heavy user, travel globally, tons of roaming, lots of actual phone calls, and lots of data use. I am typically 50-60% by end of day.
I only charge overnight. I never charge in car (car has wireless CarPlay),i use an Anker usb charger.
Phone is good, i do notice some funkiness when taking pics With auto focus at times, especially macros.
Happy with it.
Will get the next one, this will go in the hand-me down flow - to partner, to mom, to nephews etc. I get 5-6 years of use handing these out to the family.

The new United app is really well integrated into the dynamic island. I usually fly American and BA, and neither of those has done as nice a job as UAL. Their app is solid.

I have the 14 PM and I've done a yearly upgrade since the iPhone 5, on Verizon.

It is frustrating to read this review. The reviewer mentions the issue with battery life which I've witnessed as well.
But perhaps the most important upgrade year after year, especially since the first 5G modem in the iPhone 12 is the Qualcomm modem (now X65 soon to be X70) and the accompanying RF electronics. Each modem upgrade lowers battery usage on 5G.

Modem upgrades also is important for signal reach for weak signals (< 120 dBm). This is especially important in skyscrapers, subways, basements, underground parking garages, cities with high population density and lots of congestion.

Dynamic island, etc. isn't so functional if you can't reach a cell tower with good signal and data.

I use the phone a lot for tethering which also draws more power. I also own an M1 iPad Pro which works great on cellular. Because of the much larger form factor and antennas, the signal works very well without modem upgrades.

The battery life should also be improved with the new N3 process for the A17 processor.
Thus, with the larger battery, the improved modem, the improved process, the battery life promises to be a major improvement.

“Dynamic Island” is just marketing spin for a notification UI that could have always existed but was brought forward to account for holes in the middle of a display lol.

None of the animations even use the still effectively dead space where the notch was. This and the “floating” Dock drive me crazy. Just bring them to the edge and stop wasting a strip of space.

This is a little disingenuous. Every feature is just a marketing name for something - hardware or software. Action Mode is just marketing spin for stability control. Ceramic shield is just tough glass. FaceID is just a facial recognition system. TouchID is just a fingerprint scanner. Adaptive transparency is just marketing spin for fancy noise cancellation. etc etc

Yeah but they were a bit more blatant this generation. Things like telling people they no longer “have to deal with” a SIM card. Apple uses tons of proper nouns to describe features, but this generation it seems like they were reaching a little.

They’ve been on this track a while really. “ProMotion” for a 120Hz display. “Dynamic Island” for a hole punch camera. I’m surprised they didn’t try to come up with a name for widgets. All things we’ve seen before.

I’m much the same. My partner has a 12, regularly runs it to the point it switches off. Her battery health is 87%, only about 18 months old. However, my 12 Pro had terrible battery life-I sold that after 2 years and its battery health was at 81%. I’m a light/casual user.

I have a 14PM, it was replaced under AC+ between Christmas Day/New Year and my battery is still at 100%. I could almost get two days out of it, but it doesn’t always quite make it to bedtime the second day. I use a slow wireless charger every night, and my percentage is usually between 40-45% when I do this. Even on iOS 17 Beta it’s hitting the same levels.

To those worrying about battery performance, our household experiences with a 12/12 Pro battery have not been great. My experience with my 14PMax has been brilliant. I’m not one to get seriously hooked on my gadgets, but do love this phone. It is weighty, but not that much-I don’t really notice it now.

I wouldn’t splash out for one now, but if any are in the market post-15 release, it’s a hell of a phone.
I've been using my 14 PM constantly and daily as well as fast charging the phone since the day it was released and my battery health is 100% and still lasts almost two days between charges. I have optimized charging turned off. It doesn't seem to affect my battery health whatsoever.

My thoughts on the Apple iPhone 13 Pro are that I like it even more now that it's almost paid off on my Apple iCard via Apple Installment iPayments.

One thing I’ve noticed about the 14 Pro Max camera: my GF and I were taking pictures of the same exact sunset, me with my 14 Pro Max and her with her 13 Pro and her photo was warmer and the sunset subjectively more beautiful. There is some difference between the 13 and 14 camera sensors with the 13 Pro being warmer, prettier. I have 13 envy ;)

Really? I find to it be very comfortable to the point that it’s 100% caseless.

Zollo from youtube uses a lot of wireless charging and possibly throughout the night! doing that you leave your phone vulnerable to the heat spikes from the initial fast charge.. Now imagine many people don't remove their cases and that just makes heat dissipation even slower which just leaves the battery degrading for an hour or more.

Ashamed to admit I've owned every iteration of the iPhone. So many I have adored, but the iPhone 14 Pro is, by far, my least favorite of all. The battery life and thermal issues are awful. The heat generated beside the camera during regular use or charging (plugged, in particular) often causes the phone to constantly shut down.

Perhaps it was the pandemic, but the iOS 16/ iP14 cycle was Apple at its worst for me as a user. I suffered all the initial bugs: faulty screen, eSim activation, dead camera module—it's unacceptable.

The only things that drives me insane about the Dynamic Island is it's included in screenshots and way more noticeable than the original chin.

I could not be more excited for the 15, but the 14's put a ding in my defensive Apple armor.
