Mr. Cook should really dress age appropriately. He just looks silly trying to be someone he isn't.
He dresses like the CEO of a hip Silicon Valley company, age is irrelevant. It's the Apple style and they should stick to it. Few things are more depressing to watch than vintage keynotes with Steve in suit and bow tie. Talk about trying to be someone he wasn't...

You get a cable with the phone. You don't "need" this.

I don't "need" a new phone, but if I were to buy an iPhone 5, I would "need" to be able to use my existing cables that charge all my other Apple crap. So, yes, I need it and I bet most agree.

You'll use Siri. Maybe not every day. Maybe not for everything Siri can do. But Siri does certain tasks so much faster than you can do manually, it's pretty crazy not to use it. If you ever use alarms, or timers, Siri is faster. (....)

I've said this a few times already, Siri has been useless outside the US - it simply has a hard time recognising what you say. Unless this has been improved in iPhone 5, it will remain pretty useless for many non-Americans. So in theory Siri is good, especially now after the update (because I still think it's mostly a gimmick), but unfortunately only in theory.

Google Voice Search on the other hand has been superior for many years now and understands my British accent 95% of the time, so it is possible.

I find it amazing how people are complaining about lack of surprises and secrecy when they're racking up 100s and 1000s of posts on a site called MacRumours. They're going to be shipping millions of these things for sale around the world in 8 days.. what do you really expect?

7 years ago is a long time. Obviously things have moved forward but yet again apple talks like this is a new feature its bringing to the world.

Nothing is new with the iPhone 5, more of the same. They are playing catch up with the rest of the market now

And in my opinion, they spent two years and didn't catch up yet. The Galaxy III is a better piece of hardware so far as I can tell. It is WAY better then the 4s and the 5 (or 4L) is just another "WOW, that's thin" upgrade for the most part. They should spend more time innovating rather than litigating.

Do tell me how the S3 is better than the iPhone. The A6 is believed to be an A15 processor, something Samsung is still testing and has not implemented yet.

What is the difference between the S2 and S3, not all that much difference other than the companies new insight into natures pebble.

I'm willing to bet the camera and software that panorama used don't compare. :)

Either way, anything Apple adds will be criticized because it was already available or something. If Apple adds a radio, Pandamonia will say that Apple is horrible because radios were invented long ago.

----------

From a quick scan of the Compare iPhones page on the Apple site, the rear camera of the iPhone 5 has the exact same specs as the one on the iPhone 4S, with the one in the iPhone 4 being (obviously) different. It could be as simple as "same hardware, same feature". Maybe with a touch of "enough processing power" tossed in.

Why no Siri on the iPhone 4 or 3GS? Siri requires the 2nd core for the background Wolfram Alpha processing. Only the A5 and above have multi-cores.

I went up and down the spec sheet and read the model disclaimers for the iOS 6 features. It mapped out pretty consistently. I found no place where a feature was not available where there was equivolent hardware.

Yes, but there's no way the iPhone 4's hardware is too weak for panorama. There are apps that do it, and there are cheap cameras that do it. You can even put Siri on an iPhone 4 with a hack, but you need a Siri proxy on your computer or a public one for it to work.

Fragmentation / Planned Obsolescence

Hi,

Although expected, I was quite disappointed that Apple changed the screen ratio on the new iPhone. Sure, existing apps will work (with black bands), but what about the current iPhones? Apps designed for iPhone 5 will not work on the older iPhones. So, we will have some serious fragmentation.

In some 6-12 months, I suspect a lot of developers will focus on the new iPhone, not bothering with the old. So, the current iPhones will become obsolete. People will be disappointed and this will hurt Apple.

Was it really necessary to change the screen ratio? I wonder if Jobs would have allowed this to happen? I think the current iPhone is just the perfect size. I don't think a lot of people watch a full length movie regularly on an iPhone. To me, the 16x9 is not a natural ratio of general apps, especially in landscape mode.

The situation is similar for iPads, with the iOS 6 not being supported on the first iPad.

Tim Cook is a clown, he is very fake. I don't even think he knows what the post PC era is.

This may be the first keynote I don't watch.

Seriously think they should have given the job to Phil.

It's not the camera that's the problem, it's the processing power it takes to do the stitching magic.

Which is not the problem because my old Samsung feature phone was able to do it without issue. This is simply a way to force the upgrade.

I've been pretty solidly in the camp of 'it'll be a great phone/we don't need a complete redesign/it's not ugly' camp up til now but post announcement, well, I'm having doubts about this phone.

First, I think this is the phone that should have been launched last year, which has lead to 2 years running of slightly underwhelming releases: the 4S was a stop gap, the 5 was last years phone. Both ok in their own right, but I don't think we were unreasonable to expect a little more.

Now it's here and I know I'm not looking at a prototype - again, it's not ugly, it's just a little taller, but there are things that grate. For me, the bands on the back and position of the camera which is no longer centered on the radiused corner of the phone and sits too close to the edge of the band, is just clumsy and looks almost arbitrary. The 4 and 4S were pretty much aesthetically perfect. This just isn't.

My brother asked me what was new and I said it's a little taller, a little thinner, a little lighter, a little faster... a little disappointing? I wasn't expecting fireworks, but when that's all I could say about it, it doesn't sound like I'm describing the most hotly anticipated product of the year does it?

And there just aren't ANY new features. NONE. I live in Europe and I wanted NFC. That would have been new, useful and for the iPhone at least, revolutionary. NFC is a mature and widely used standard whatever Schiller and the deniers claim.

And 4G? Now I knew the UK was lagging behind, and we'd probably have to wait til next year, but now I read that the 4G frequencies being auctioned off aren't supported by the iPhone 5. What??? Is it possible that next year if I do want to take advantage of 4G I'll have to upgrade my phone again? Apple and the UK carriers sure are keeping that one quiet huh?

I only have a 3G and am desperate for an upgrade now but I'm seriously considering a 4S. It's nearly £80 cheaper than a 5, does literally everything the 5 does and in my opinion - it's probably the pinnacle of the Job's era apple products, while the 5 might well be the phone he wouldn't let them release last time because it just wasn't right.

Actually, he is. Do gay people annoy you for any legitimate reason?

His presentation was hard to listen to because he feels he must emphasize most of his words for effect. After a few minutes, it is so distracting, it takes away from the message itself.

But then, on top of that, it figures then. Some gay males: their speech is elongated/ whiny. Don't know why. I hear some gay men speak normally. The others sound different. But it's very irritating.

The only top people @ Apple who should present are Scott, Bob and Jony.

Man, I miss SJ.

What good is an A15 CPU when your OS is locked down to hell and you cant do anything that Apple doesnt want you to do?

iPhone 5 has a smaller odd looking 16:9 screen with a battery you cant remove and low storage memory for very high price that you cant increase yourself unless you pay Apple serious money.

IOS has no Google maps any more. BIG LOSS. iOS 6 looks like iOS 1 and basically doesnt do much else than it did 5 years ago. Boringly dull OS and limited freedom to do what you want on YOUR device. Apple thinks the iPhone belongs to them even AFTER you paid for it.

i can go on and on but lets face it everyone knows the S3 is a better phone and the iPhone is just way behind the times. People have been waiting 2 years for this? LOL. The only really good looking and interesting phone was the iPhone 5 that was never released when they dropped the 4S on everyone instead.

Jobs is dead and so is Apple it seems. No wonder they need the US patent system now they forgot how to innovate.

Found this - it's quite accurate...

As the late great popular pianist Liberace told Johnny Carson when asked about how all the criticism affected him, "I cry all the way to the bank." Is that all you iHaters have left? Only stupid people buy Apple products while you, the enlightened beings who live in your parent's basement, know different?

Well, I guess the new Iphone will do just right, but not my cup of tea anymore, no since I sold my Iphone 4 and bought something bigger called HTC EVO 4G LTE, not even the most powerful of all the coming Android phones out there, but it does the job smoothly and fine!!, It can kill the Iphones everyday, and we are not even talking about Galaxy S3, or the Samsung Note!! (Quadcore phones!!).

So, eventually all the people will realize that the same phone desing over and over again will make them get a newer, bigger phone, it'll happen eventually, it's not a hate thing, just a realization, having money to buy an Iproduct won't make a difference as well.

Did someone pee in your cheerios?

No one is calling Apple customers stupid. No one is saying those that buy others are more enlightened. Did the comic (you know - intended for humor) hit a raw nerve? Must have since you resorted to the 1980s cliche of referring to anyone who doesn't think or act exactly as you as living in their parent's basement. I mean really. Quite dated.

Too bad they hired the Foo Fighters. If Apple really had music in it's DNA they would of picked someone safer than the lame and safe Foo Fighters.

Meh

Not impressed with the lack of design change (same steel band around it). That being said, I still prefer iOS to Android and the new widescreen landscape sat nav feature is a big winner for me. I've been using Photosynth for Panoramic shots on my iPhone 4 for a while but Apple's looks way more polished, especially with that gem of a camera.
It's gonna cost a lot, but hey a 4S cost that much so why should this new model be any less? It's gonna hurt my pocket but if I bought a 4S now, every time I saw a 5 for the next 2 years it would hurt my soul.

A well-reasoned, surely well-informed post!

So, being that you know everything about the guy, why exactly is he such a clown?

no one, and I mean NO ONE, can ever arouse the level of enthusiasm and excitement about an Apple product the way Steve Jobs could.

I completely agree. I think the missing component in the presenters is "mad genius". The only one who comes close is J. Ive. The other guys are good and they have a video vault they can use to study and practice to get better, but still not the same. The apple presenters are still the gold standard, though. No body presents as well as they do.
