Apple always charges $30 for adaptors. Get a third-party one or a Chinese knockoff.

As a matter of principle, that farking adapter should be free.
As a gesture of good will, and so that people can continue to use their docks.
Especially on the release of the first device to use it.

I know what will happen now, all the defenders of apple will come out and say otherwise, but it would only cost them a couple of bucks to produce, and it should be included with a $1000 device.

One thing I have seen repeatedly on the forums about the keynote is how it just wasn't the same as when it was Steve. Yes, that is true, but then again, that is what made Steve so great. If you started watching a keynote and it was the same as Steve, things wouldn't be right. Any Apple fan that is expecting that same thing from someone else is always going to be let down.

As much as it may suck, Steve is gone and Apple is currently trying to continue down the path he built in order to set them up for the future. Failing to accept that and expecting the same performance on stage will not make things any easier. Let's not forget that Steve was great at selling products. He could redesign a button on an iPod, change nothing else and pitch it to you as "amazing" or "fantastic" and convince many of us that we needed it. Just because the new guys performing the keynote aren't as good as Steve was does not mean that the products are of a lesser quality and assuming that, in a way is saying that Steve didn't do his job to set the company up for the future.

It's incredible not just how emotional people get about a phone, but how 'keen apple fans' feel the need to write an essay about the impact that such devices/products might or might not have on their lives. I'm not taking the pi55 here - knock yourself out - just try to remember; it's just a phone. If you don't need it don't buy it. If you don't want it, don't buy it. If it isn't everything you'd hoped for, get over it.
Announcements like this are doomed to failure simply because the insane level of entitlement/expectation from 'fans'. When that expected hit isn't delivered, people seem to crumble and get themselves down. And falling in love with the way an enormous company like Apple sell you things, and market at you as part of the experience is needy and a little bit weird.
I'll say it again: It's just a phone. Apple released it, showed it to us, and told us what it does. Your assessment of how that announcement has underwhelmed you, but you'll still buy it really just sounds like a cry for help.
And One More Thing...
I'm guessing Apple won't be too worried about the tragic loss of their magic, and their desperate struggle without Steve Jobs' presentation to snag customers, when after all you will be "preordering and/or standing in line to get one"!!
I think that's some voodoo.

I can see your point of view, and of course you are right, it is just a phone.

But, as you say yourself, there is a lot more going on here, a lot of people are feeling much more of an interest and fascination with Apple than could be explained by just some company releasing an updated phone.

I don't agree with your explanation that this is a 'cry for help', but perhaps you are right.

For me it is simply that Apple seem to stand for some kind of ideology that other companies don't. Im not saying that there is necessary any substance behind this view, it may just be marketing or an accident, but it does seem that by supporting Apple you are also supporting a set of values.

And I don't see those same values attached to Samsung or Microsoft or Google at the moment.

So yeh, whilst I do agree with you in some ways, I don't think the answer to the mystery is by criticising the Apple fans, or by pointing out ways in which Apple doesn't meet the ideological image that some people hold of it.

The fascinating question to me, is why does it have such an image at all?

Yeh, the power adapter for the new mac book pro is pretty cheap, and given away free with the cinema display as well.

I wonder if they wanted to make sure that the cost of the new lightning cable was going to be less than buying an old cable and adapter.

What Tim Cook should have done before the conference:

Tim: Siri, what is the thinnest smartphone in the world?
Siri: The Oppo Finder

Tim: How many smartphones out there are thinner than 7.6 mm?
Siri: More than 5.

Tim: Shhhh------t

Note: I don't care if iPhone 5 is the thinnest smartphone or not, but I care when Apple claims things that are simply untrue

The Oppo Finder promotional materials include measurements without factoring in the camera protrusion. Same trick Motorola pulls with the RAZR, as does the Huawei Ascend P1.

iPhone 5 is uniform so there is no "cheating" or asymmetric shapes.

I don't know if the iPhone 5 is really the thinnest phone in the world, but at least the numbers are real.

First of all these phones are not cheating as this is the industry standard way of measuring phone thickness, second of all the Oppo Finder at it's thickest point is still 7.1 mm.

Here's a comparison image (with the leaked parts, which turned out to be the real deal):

In realtime, with all the correction work that the iPhone 5 also does on the image? Or some more primitive form?

What's so great about what the iPhone 5 does ? You've obviously played with one and have already vast knowledge of the internals of the software powering panoramic mode from your comment.

No, don't be fooled guys, this is exactly like the home screen wallpapers. The iPhone 3G couldn't do all the correction work that the 3GS/4 also did on the image. Any wallpapers you've had on lesser powered phones were more primitive forms of the homescreen wallpapers found in iOS 4 that could only run on the 3GS.

Are you guys really trying to pretend this is not Apple forcing obsolescence ?

So you mean those devices achieve thinnest without sacrificing the optics of the camera ? ;)

I find Tim C. is annoying to listen to. Is he gay?

WOW, I can't agree more (about the annoying).

I agree completely. I have been writing about this since the new Macbook Retina came out. Disposable $3k laptops that throw away ethernet, optical, and the ability to replace minor components like HD and memory. You get 1YR warranty or you pay $350+ tax (like $400) for 2 additional years. After that you buy new or get a $1k-$1.5k repair bill. All for 3/16 of an inch and the Fanboy "WOW thats thin" I gotta get me one of those reactions.

I see this as a turning point for Apple, especially in this economy. I have been swearing by Apple for many years and own nothing but Apple products but I sense my mindset changing. I can not see myself with a Mac laptop if they ever get rid of the current line of non-retinas.

Its all about greed. Just look at the $29 adapter they are selling. Has to cost them .20 cents to make in bulk.

I'm willing to bet the camera and software that panorama used don't compare. :)

7 years ago is a long time. Obviously things have moved forward but yet again apple talks like this is a new feature its bringing to the world.

Nothing is new with the iPhone 5, more of the same. They are playing catch up with the rest of the market now

WOW, I can't agree more (about the annoying).

His problem is that he just tries too hard to be enthusiastic in a way that isn't his personality. Steve was a great presenter because he spoke with an authentic voice. He spoke at keynotes as if it were just you and him in your living room.

But honestly, part of the reason Steve is remembered for wowing us is because the products in and of themselves were revolutionary. It's not possible to do that every year. As long as Apple continues to churn out solid products that are pleasing to use, along with a customer service experience that wows customers, they'll do fine. And when the next revolutionary product comes out, people will say Apple has regained its magic. Their hype machine has just created unrealistic expectations for each product release.

The iphone black version looks so much better than the gunmetal colour that was leaked

I'll wait for the DVD box set.

What? No Blu-ray box set? LOL

Found this - it's quite accurate...

Clever AND funny! Enjoyed reading that!

God I miss the Jobs showmanship.

....just how much I still miss Steve Jobs. The keynote presentations, no matter how great (or not-so-great) the product, are just not the same without him......One reason is because so many of the new features and such were already guessed-at on the various forums, which then takes away the surprise element which is usually part of the fun.....but I have to admit that, yeah, I'm not all that excited about it. One huge reason I think I was just not excited at today's keynote is....well....for me, the magic is gone......no one, and I mean NO ONE, can ever arouse the level of enthusiasm and excitement about an Apple product the way Steve Jobs could. His "reality distortion field" had the viewer/listener wrapped around his little finger in nothing flat. His charisma, his ability to charm everyone into seeing the magic of whatever new Apple product he was talking about is just not there any more. I really missed him today and I'll bet I am far from the only one who did.

Totally agree with both of you! Steve was, well....MAGICAL....a one-of-a-kind!!

Just started watching the keynote, and what the hell is up with Cook's voice. I understand some intonation required for some statements, but my God he's over using it way too much. It like he's been instructed to talk like this to make the numbers sound amazing. Just talk like a normal human being. He's hamming it up to another level of incredulity that makes it literally unbelievable or desperate.

i actually like this design better

I do too. I have the previous generation "clip" model, and the display looks cool, but it's too small to be useful. I do love that you can just clip it anywhere and it disappears.

Mine pretty much lives in my car 100% of the time though, tucked away in the center console hooked into the iPod connector.

Did Apple announce when you can pre order an "OFF CONTRACT" version of the iPhone 5? I didn't hear any mention of it at the keynote or see anything about it on the website.

I know they offer an off contract iPhone 4S...but I want the larger screen and bigger storage space of the iPhone 5.

I travel a lot, and do not want to be locked into an overpriced contract.

I am almost tempted to get one of the new iPod touches instead and use it with VoIP and my google phone number. The countries I travel to are covered in free wifi, and my home city of NY is full of free hotspots as well. So it's tempting to ditch the smartphone all together.

He didn't talk like this before, he's clearly been doing some public speaking training. Unfortunately it got way too dramatic. The mix of Alabama, effeminate and Shakespearean is strangely captivating, but mostly just strange.

Other than that I think they're handling it quite well without Steve. My only gripe is the oft-repeated phrase "The best [insert product name here] we've ever made". Well DUHH. Like they were gonna say "This is almost as good as the last model, overall I think this ranks #3 or #4 of all the iPhones we've made".
Reminds me of Ford Prefect's observation on humans, their habit of continually stating and repeating the very very obvious, as in "It's a nice day", or "You're very tall", or "Oh dear you seem to have fallen down a thirty-foot well, are you alright?"

Mr. Cook should really dress age appropriately. He just looks silly trying to be someone he isn't.

Actually, he is. Do gay people annoy you for any legitimate reason?

Damn I am a dude but is he single? ;)

Thats a lot of money right there.

Topic: checked out his speaking tone and he changed it up a bit. Kind of sounds as if he is trying to emulate Steve. Meh, I think Apple is better with a more creative mind at the very top personally. A creative mind that likes powerful computers and form along with function to boot. Not 1 mm thinner BS.
