I suggest we make a thread on who thinks this is a fake, and record all the screen names of all those who don't believe in it. When the day comes for the introduction of the new mini, then we will know who are the ones being owned big time.

I don't know what to believe though. But if I have to choose, I think this is the right deal.

WTF? Why are people getting so worked up over this one?

Here's the deal: nobody knows 100% so there's no reason to get worked up one way or the other. However, this Mini video has scored enough points on the fake-o-meter that it's probably a good bet to move on. And if you look back over the history of fakes on MacRumors, the site has an excellent track record of debunking even the most convincing fakes.

So, here are the main points as to why it's likely fake:

1. Does not match current consumer aesthetic and would be very out of character for Apple to re-use such a dated design. (Even the eMac got a makeover back in the gumdrop iMac era so there's precedent for Apple doing an updated design even for the low-end machines.)

2. Possible technical issue with the odd number of USB ports.

3. Questionable source and story.

4. Suspicious warping on the right side of the Mini's back panel suggests some shenanigans.

So, can you list the reasons why you think this is real? And remember, the fact that there's a video doesn't count. There have been videos of fakes in the past. A video of an actual object doesn't mean it's a real rumor--just means some people are willing to go to some surprising lengths to fool people.

My first reaction was - the amount of USB ports is so .. not Apple. Never mind anything else. I didn't even get that far to analyze shadows, angles, port orientation, port amounts, etc.

As for the odd amount, they could have reserved one internally. Remember the phantom evidence of the iPod dock on the original mini?

"The difference is, buying iMacs every two years, you would have had a better computer for 5 of those 7 years."

I do have a fall 2006 mini, the one with a 1.66 Ghz core duo. The quicksilver is faster where it counts, which is why it is still my main machine, and the mini is in the stereo cabinet. The next mini update was fall of 2007, so that was 5 1/2 years before a mini appeared that could outrun the G4. I'm not even sure it could, GMA 950 vs ATI 9600? 5400 rpm laptop drive vs 7200 Sata desktop drive? I think the overall performance results would still be up in the air even spotting the 2 Ghz mini the CPU edge.

USB 2 had a very fast takeover from USB 1. If I had a machine that did not have an expansion slot (Lampshade iMac or 2002 vintage) that would have been dumpster bait too. Ironically, Apple's iPod shuffle was the first peripheral that would not work on USB 1. It claimed it would; but it didn't. It worked fine (and still does) on the USB 2 card I put in the quicksilver. So I'm not sanguine about how long USB 2 will stay relevant.
It would be a fairer comparison if you compared iMacs, as I suggested. :)

I'm having a hard time remembering the rear of an iMac, but doesn't it only have 3 USB ports? That is 'odd'.

What about the design?

The plastic top I assume is for better wireless performance.

Again, the nVidia Ion platform supports 7 USB ports (nVidia's prototype had 6 physical USB ports)

And when did the eMac design change?

Not saying your points aren't valid, but doesn't the iMac and 17" MacBook Pro have 3 USB ports? Or is the "technical issue" just with odd numbers 5 or greater?

No, haha! I meant "odd" in the sense of unusual. Someone a few pages back pointed out some technical issues with having 5 USB ports which may cast doubt on the authenticity.

And when did the eMac design change?

It didn't get a design change per se. When the eMac came out, Apple was moving from translucent plastics to a white plastic aesthetic (think, early iPods, G4 iBooks, G4 iMacs, etc.) Apple could have just continued cranking out the old gumdrop iMacs and called it the eMac, but instead they went to the effort to update that look with the white plastic design style and reshaping it to fit the current line. It's a precedent for Apple paying attention to the design and look of their "low-end" products which makes me suspicious of any claims that an updated Mini will look like last generation Apple design.

I agree with your points, except you can use FCE and Illustrator just fine on a Mac mini, even the current one. Many people here think you need a Mac Pro to do anything other than check email and surf the web, which is frankly laughable. You'll hear things like "if you want to get real work done" than you need something with more power (be it graphics, memory, cpu, or whatever the complaint of the day is). I use the current version of FCE on a rev A iMac G5 with no problem. Yeah, it is faster on my Macbook, but it is not unusable by any stretch.

The fact of the matter is that even the current low-end Macs have plenty of power for all but the most serious of home users. But many here are just obsessed with having the latest and greatest even though they have no need for it.

Is the mini overpriced and in need of an upgrade? Yes, but that doesn't make it unusable.

True, the C2D minis can run a lot of the programs that more powerful Macs run. My point was that most people that buy the mini are not buying it to run FCE or CS4, even though it is capable of running them.

more!

There had better be more updates than that! I was hoping for some aluminum/iPhone 3G plastic hybrid mini!

fresh air please!

i like the mac mini, but it makes me sad that apple didn't invent a new form factor for it since all those years that it is on the market. similar to the change of the ipod shuffle it would be interesting to see how the design develops, but it seems like there is no energy left at apple to "think different" and invent something new.

one problems i have with the current mac mini is that you can not really let it stand up. when you do it, you have the bottom-plastic on one side, and an apple logo turned around on the other. i wish the mac mini could be used as a tower as well!

I think it's fake... but is about time apple releases a new mac mini!

And at the same time an apple tv that fully support 1080p output :p

While there's a high likelihood that someone with a little machine shop experience has too much time on his/her hands I'm not convinced that white plastic means it's fake.

Does Apple want to sell the mini at all? Probably only as a last resort when they can't talk you into MacBook or iMac. Thus it makes little or no sense for them to spend any money redesigning it.

Apple will never listen to me, but the mini was a mistake from day 1. It should never have been so small that it needed a unique logic board. There were two sensible choices that Apple ignored: (1) use the iBook logic board and parts, or (2) make it big enough to use inexpensive desktop parts.

Choice 1 would have required only one new part, a smaller version of the iBook case.

Choice 2 would have allowed them to make a small, inexpensive entry level machine to attract the initial wave of switchers and had the flexibility to include higher performance parts. As Apple's fortunes improved and they wanted to get away from the low end they would simply have put higher performance parts into the box and raised the price. A bigger, better "mini" would then appeal to a wider range of the kind of desktop customers Apple wants, those who can afford to pay more than $1000. They would have had an instant entry to the home server market, the "headless iMac" crowd and there would never have been an opportunity for Psystar, PearC and the other organized clone makers.

Apple realizes that the mini was a mistake and by leaving it unchanged for 18 months is hoping that people forget it.

I somehow can't see them keeping so much white on the mini after moving away from it in other products...

Ummm... let's see. The original iphone was Aluminum (mostly) and black. The current iPhones come in either black plastic or WHITE plastic.

That doesn't change the fact that they're moving away from white plastic. They're moving away from plastic entirely, it just seems it was necessary for the 3G.

Ok , this is a little out there so bear with me (I've already had a thread locked on this subject but have been told ok to post it here so...............

maybe there is a clue in his name somehow??

What I mean is that 'month' is the beginning of his name and 'y' at the end. monthy .

Will be see the Mini update in a month and it's simple child like speak or...

Is their a language in the world or some mathematical workings out or some 'thing' somewhere that could explain what month 'y' is ?

Just thinking different ;)

ps, and no I'm not smoking herbal mixtures like someone mentioned in my thread.

People have been saying "if you want to do real work.....blah blah blah" crap for ages, and they forget people have been doing really productive work on the Mac (video, audio, Photoshop, Illustrator) since the G3 days. I remember doing DVD quality video editing on a 450Mhz PowerMac back in 2001. Same goes for Pro Tools.

I still use my 400Mhz G4 PB for podcast stuff, and even at 24-bit hour long recordings, it never sneezes. Sure my MBP is way faster, but not everything requires 8 cores and 32GB of RAM. :D

as a really old mac head I've been using Macs since the Motorola days as a young designer, and back then they where the only game in town. Except for the odd Quantel Paint Box that is.

I still have an 840AV which boots first time and is great for imputing analogue video.

as for this rumour, it's a joke so many people believe it, it would have a mini display port for a start, without even considering all those USBs, the non changing form factor and inclusion of firewire 800...any one believing this one haven't really though about it, perhaps the lack of an update is clouding judgements....
