if this comes out. say bye bye to the resale value on my mac mini :(

Your 'resale value' has already been suspended at an unrealistically high level anyway, for an astounding amount of time, thanks to this riduculous gap in updates.

You should hardly be bitching. :)

I sure wish they hadn't done any updates since my powermac g4. Thanks to Apple's greed, now that system isn't worth much at all. Bastards.

The fact of the matter is that even the current low-end Macs have plenty of power for all but the most serious of home users. But many here are just obsessed with having the latest and greatest even though they have no need for it.

For most work, even photo or video editing, the current MacMini is still powerful enough. Well it takes a bit longer and some things are not as snappy as on a MacPro, but it is usable.

But you quickly hit a barrier, when it comes to play high-res H.264 video. And this is a hit or miss situation because watching a stuttering video is simply impossible. Either it works seamless or it doesn't work at all.

That said the current MacMini is really borderline for watching HD video - mainly due to the weak gpu.

The 2 ghz Mac Mini can play 1080p high bit rate video (e.g., Blu-ray) just fine, provided you have the right software.;)

It's not borderline. It can play it just fine. The gpu has nothing to do with video playback, other than displaying 1920x1200 images at 24 fps, which it's perfectly capable of doing.

I'd like for Apple to announce a refresh or kill it off entirely so I can commit to either a new mini or iMac.

When will this stupid ass cloud of everything must be kept top secret from the customers ever be lifted? It’s the dumbest thing I have ever seen in my life considering the fact that you can only legally run OS X on Apple hardware. What top secret is there to steal? Who wants it? I honestly have never understood this whole wizard of OZ type mentality that is used by Apple.

Why must everything be kept top secret until the day of the launch? Ever heard of press release a month or so in advance  are these all rules written in the sceret Apple Bible by his holiness SJ I really dont see how you guys put up with this clown. Reminds more of a soviet union dictator then a CEO.

It's all in the marketing and business planning. Of course everything do has to be kept secret, every company does that. Apple just does it better.

Business is like the cold war, if the Russians know you're working on the B-2 spirit before you even finish the plane, by the time it's out they'll have a counter to it.

You might not like it but that's how it is. Side effect is it create a lot more hype and once they deliver creates a lot more marketing potential.

Sorry but I am 46 years old with a solid good education and I know the basics of business marketing 101 and I must respectfully disagree, every company does not keep everything top secret! Your reply is laughable!

And yet, despite the shroud of secrecy, Apple has done well over the past 10 years. Apple goes against what common sense dictates. And yet they still succeed. Exceptions always exist.

All I am asking is why the cloud of secrecy? The hardware inside of most Apple machines is the same basic hardware inside every modern day computer young kids build them at home now days. So sure keep your design etc. under wraps I understand that but a simple black and white text press release stating the new Mac Mini or what ever new model will be introduced on 02-02-09 for example does not reveal any corporate or design secrets. It only alerts the consumer that a new product will be released on said date.

Apple doesn't do this. There's a cult to the company and cult's don't take well to change.

I love the shroud of secrecy. It's amusing the kinds of things people can dream up.

Question:

If you knew 100% that a new model was coming out in 6 weeks would you purchase a current model?

It isn't rocket science people.

So it's looking more and more likely that the Mini will get an update, judging by the rumour mill cranking up a gear ........

I ask you guys this: If you needed a computer ( and have for a while ) would you hang on for just a bit longer in the hope the Mini is coming quite soon or plump down $£ on a whitebook? and be done with it but feel disappointed when the new funky Mini comes out the week or two later.

you should know the answer if it isnt that hard to decrypt..

but ill answer it for you anyway
NO!

I, uh, think that's what he was saying, in response to dwl017. ;)

Apple keeps things a secret because, oh, I don't know, maybe, being a business, they want to sell the products they're currently selling.

If that means that you don't buy anything, you don't buy anything. There are millions more out there who couldn't care less and don't know better.

If you can choose either the Mac mini or the white MacBook, then you shouldn't wait. At best, in most people's opinion, the new Mac mini will be similar in specs to the aluminium MacBooks (but we're hoping it will keep FireWire 400, like the white MacBook). :D

FAKE! FAKE!

if it was real why would it not be removed at the request of Apple!

Apple hasn't always asked people to remove pictures, and they don't always have the right to. If that person is not under a Non-Disclosure Agreement and didn't obtain the information illegally, Apple would have no grounds to remove it. In addition, they seem to have chosen to ignore some things that were real recently in order to avoid confirming they were real by having them removed (of course, they don't have the ones that are fake removed either, so it muddies the water nicely).

There were pictures of MB/MBP cases and last gen. iPod nanos (not the chubby) that were left to fester.

Oh, yeah, of course.

But I'm talking about older stuff, like from the 3rd gen nano to the past, back in the days of ThinkSecret.

It was assumed that ThinkSecret had an informant inside Apple, so that would have been an NDA, but I just remember them requesting pictures being taken down without mention of NDA...

Maybe not.

It depends what you need and how bad you want the machine. I personally can hold off to buy another machine till they come out with the new mini (because I am not in need of another computer) and it is still yet to be decided if I will buy the new mini or not when it gets refreshed. For you, if the mini is what you truly desire and you can hold off for even longer than go ahead and wait.

Even if the video is a fake, I still think that Apple will be releasing a new mini in the near future.

You are correct. I think they've done everything they can to stop leaks but it seems Apple has realized that Chinese factory workers can't be totally stopped so they just quit commenting. No comment just lets the rumors or true facts perpetuate. This actually works in favor of Apple Inc. At least the rumors keep interest in Apple's then enthralling product line.

Need an update

I am a graphic designer and if the rumors are true about the release of the new mini will it be powerful enough to handle the adobe products. I will not be working with any large format projects (posters, panels or large signs). It will manly be used for side work ( brochures, invites and web page design) and a little low end photo editing and small imovie projects. I currently have an old G4 imac and need to know if I would be better off with a mac book or mac book pro, but definitely do not have the cash for a power mac.
