i don't think the home button should go away.

On a multi touch device, there's always the chance that a user could inadvertently create the specific gesture that would send the user to the homescreen. That could potentially frustrate and confuse users. I can just see it now, you're in the middle of an intense game or something else- all of a sudden - poof there goes your app and there's the home screen.

what about people that lose fingers in oil field accidents and knife fights!!!!! I guess they can't use os4.3~~~

This would be interesting on the iPhone. Implement the pinch-to-homescreen gesture and remap the home button for the Camera app to serve as shutter release.

No, sorry, let's not start copying Android (Honeycomb). Every device needs physical buttons especially in times of software issues...

Last I counted there are as many as 3 other buttons. No need for the home button at all.

It looks nice and convenient, but if it can't be turned off, it destroys one of the main features of the iPad that appealed to me: for multiplayer/family gaming (i.e. playing with 3-4 people on one device)

If it can't be turned off, there goes games like Multipong, Party Quiz, and tons of other 4-player games that I purchased. :/

Maybe it is smart enough to not affect those applications. Then again, it might not be.

I would love a no home button iphone. But if someone is handicapped with 3 or 4 fingers. That would open this up to potential lawsuit no?

One of the most interesting new features found in iOS 4.3 is the introduction of four and five finger gestures for the iPad.
The above video shows the user four-finger swiping from left/right to switch between multitasking apps. Meanwhile pinching with 4 or 5 fingers can return you to the home screen, which potentially removes the need for a physical home button.

This is where I think WebOS and PlayBook OS have iOS beat. The use of the bezel to initiate system wide functions keeps this from being a problem by insuring a clean separation of system from application without physical buttons.

Seeing as that article was posted after my comment, no I had not seen it.

I think a home button on the side would be usable. I find that I try to navigate my iPod one-handed, and have to bust out my second hand if I'm watching something. (Yes, that sounds lazy, I know...) If the button were on the side, it would mean (for me, at least) not having to move my whole hand to return to the home screen.

you can always downgrade to any firmware that is most current. which right now is 4.2.1

No. You can't. Expired 4.2 beta on your iPad? Want to put 3.x back on? Sorry, tough luck. I know this for a fact, from first-hand personal experience.

There's one there already - not for the whole interface, cause the physical device rotate takes care of that, but in photos when you pinch in/out you can also rotate...

Um, no. It's not preserved. It's little more than an animation to open or close an album. It does not actually rotate the photo.

this is really really cool.

seeing it makes me wonder why apple didn't have this kind of touch gesturing when the ipad first launched last year. they had the gestures on the trackpad, so why wait this long to put it on the all touch device, ipad? seems a little weird. but still great to see the ipads will have this functionality too. i really hope the ipad 2 launches soon with 4.3

So you can use 5 fingers to exit the software and go back to the Desktop? Mmm I don't think so...

Personally, I think the new gestures are cool and welcome but I would rather keep the home button... From a User Experience it makes sense that the (physical) home button do just that... Exit and back to the Home screen and most importantly, shutting down the device, just like a Power button and any other device. A mix between iOS control gestures and App only gestures sounds confusing.

About time

About time! My Home button sometimes doesn't respond. Maybe it has been overused. I have suggested the use of gestures for Task Switching and Home screen access... Finally!:D

I've never used an iPad. 3,4,5 finger gestures just don't seem very intuitive to me.

20 more minutes for the download of Xcode 3.2.5(maybe a little different). Then just reboot to osx and install.. I wonder if I can check "use for development" without an actual dev account(I guess not, but worth a try)

you need a dev account

This is very cool most of the time, the only problem I see is that now these gestures are unavailable to developers for use in their own apps. Even if it's possible to override the system gestures, it'd probably be unwise to do so because it creates confusion.

I just predicted some of this stuff last week in what I called
taking OSX Lion "Back to the iPad"

VERY happy to see this actually happening!

Now what I want to see is Dashboard and Mission Control.

Make it so Jobs.

Before this multi-tasking news, I envisioned a gesture where you can pull the multi-tasking tray bar almost all the way to the top to reveal the bottom section with the fabric background. Top section can be all apps, bottom section can be widgets or whatever. Alternatively, they could also pull the top bar strip down.

um, do you know what the word current means? when 3.x was the most current you could. same now. if i upgraded to 4.3 beta i can downgrade to 4.2.1 right now no prob.

loaded up the beta on my iPad (64-3G), registered in xCode, gesture option works perfect :)

Now for the actual gestures, on my iPad they're extremely buggy, the app "shoots" back to the previous app. Example: In mail, swipe right to goto settings, it shows settings for a second, then shoots back to mail. it'll eventually work if you keep swiping, but its not as smooth for me like it is in the videos

Ya, I'm having the same issues. Pulling up the dock and closing apps works pretty well, but the app switching is really buggy. My iPad does the same thing you are describing and also has locked up on me a few times. Of course this is a beta, but you would think that they would at least of made sure it sorta works.
