Anyone else thinks the iPhone will get alittle bigger?

4 inches at least? I can see these gestures coming to the iPhone at 4 inches but with 2 and 3 fingers as opposed to 4 and 5.

That would be cool.

I just can’t believe how impressed you all are about multitouch.

What is so special? It is about the same… using home button or five fingers pinch and as someone mentioned already … this is electronics, complex software, you need a hardware alternative, if something goes wrong! Let’s face it, Apple is not almighty!

I would rather see Apple working on e.g. Numbers for iPad. Just yesterday I imported Excel file with VLOOKUP function (all references in the same file) and it is not working … a simple VLOOKUP… so, Apple don’t try to impress me with image!

It's not that difficult to pull off, yet it's not an action you'd likely perform accidentally. It may need to be disabled when using music apps and games, though.

i do these gestures all the time in Fruit Ninja, they need to be disabled in games but that that would make the feature inconsistent.

Apple owes me a job!

I just predicted some of this stuff last week in what I called
taking OSX Lion "Back to the iPad"

VERY happy to see this actually happening!

Now what I want to see is Dashboard and Mission Control.

Make it so Jobs.

omg, that's awesome, sign me up

title says it all. That is beyond awesome, i always wondered why they didn't do that? I also would like to see gesture in safari. Three finger swipe right back, forward, etc.. new page.. i just never understood why they didn't implement that stuff.

Man that looks cool. But I would like to use the 5-finger grip to invoke an expose like overview over running applications.

And Apple should get to work on the multitasking a bit more. They need to figure out a way to visualize what apps are running and which had been shut down in the meantime. Keeping all apps ever open in the tray defeats the purpose.

Wonder if they bring something like that to the iPhone as well (sorry if that was covered already).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-gb) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

This is interesting and acts great, but I just thought
what about apps that use four/five fingers? I can't think of many off the top of my head, but surely there are some apps out there that would have to be changed due to this.

I could be wrong, but wont these gestures interfere with certain apps? What if a game requires you to swipe up? Or what if you're messing with a music app and you use four fingers? Unless the gestures are disabled automatically for these types of apps, I could see this being incredibly annoying at times. Still, it's optional.. so no big deal.

Doubt there are many apps that regularly require 4 and 5 finger gesters.

I totally agree and have been thinking the same thing since before they even implemented multi-tasking. Palm really got it right with Web OS I have to say!

If they do these gestures and ditch the home button I wonder how Apple will rework the features like voice control and taking screen shots. Also it kind of makes it impossible to use these devices one handed for good now.

Sorry for the double post. Mod you can combine please. Thanks!

This looks awesome, I've been waiting for quite awhile for Apple to add gestures!
Looks like they've got it perfect too.

It's also nice to see this in a smaller update, not a milestone update like 4.5 or 5.0.

so whats special about multi finger pinching and zooming? we can already do that with 2 fingers... i dont see the point of this demo. it does not show anything new.

You can already do that to switch apps? To close apps? To open the bottom bar??

Currently on the iPhone you can hold your iphone with just one hand and push the home button with your thumb.

Try that with multitouch!!

Kiss the home button good bye!!!

I guarantee this is the first step in Steve making the home button disappear.

Yes, I also thought of "Honeycomb" BUT, Apple actually has done this already in the new iPod nano with a long press. Does that make you feel better now lol? Also, "Honeycomb" adds a second bar at the bottom of the screen for the "home", "back" and "multi-tasking" commands which takes up screen real estate. I think multi-touch gestures are a much more elegant solution!

P.S. Matias Duarte designed WebOS which is very nice next to iOS and has the best multi-tasking UI implementation, and is now at Google heading up the new "Honeycomb" UI. I may not like Android or Google, but he is a pretty good designer and has some good ideas. I think it makes sense to make tablets orientation agnostic, especially when it is so nicely and easily done with multi-touch gestures like these!

Now I'm not sure about the volume, mute, sleep/wake buttons.

Is it just my eyes or was the settings app stretching (rather than bouncing) as he tried to swipe to where there were no more apps?

Nice to see the iPad will finally be multitouch - up until now it's actually only been dual-touch.

I think the more likely scenario is the iPad 2 will have a home button but they will have be watching closely the statistics of how much the button is used compared to the gestures. A good adoption of the gestures means the home button is gone on iPad 3.

This really highlights the multitasking capabilities and I bet it will make the iPad seem a lot more like a laptop to a lot of people. At the very least I'll be using the horizontal gestures for sure.

If you want a laptop, get a laptop. Why the desire by people to morph this into something that already exists? iPad is a different device category, it's not a laptop replacement. Stop trying to make it into one.

Laptops already exist, the cases that turn iPad into a small laptop are ridiculous - by the time you've bought the case and a decent spec iPad you could have bought a macbook!

You can use two fingers to zoom in and out. You can't use 4 fingers to pinch back to the home screen, two switch apps, to enter the multi tasking bottom bar...

lol, why is 4.3 and less a milestone than 4.5?

Is 10.6 to 10.7 a smaller milestone?

not sure if I want blind swiping between apps. Unlike my mac, I don't really shut down ipad apps, so I could be swiping into games I just played but don't want to play anymore, just because it was the last thing I did. I'd rather (or also) have an expose swipe (four fingers up?) where all currently active apps or most recent have little thumbnails showing their status and I can press the one I want to jump to. That way I have multitasking switching but with some additional context - eg a thumbnail of the webpage I was just on, or the powerpoint I was working on.

hm, the swipe with left right looks very good – good idea from apple.

the elastic effect when you are on the left side is a break of the rule and inconsistent. it should look like the effect when you are in a list and reach the upper or left end.

the "grab" gesture is ok, but i still think that it should result in a screen on which you can see all the running apps - just like expose on the mac! the multitasking bar on the bottom is crap. it doesn't show enough of the running apps, you have to swipe left/right... it's confusing.

the running apps should be reperesented as screens of the running app when you make the grab gesture or hold the home button longer. the way how multitasking is handeled right now is not good.
