This is what happens when you put an operations guy to make decisions.Well, they probably have a warehouse full of old Apple Pencil 1 that needs to be sold. Selling an old wine in new bottles is Apples way to boost the sales of old crap.

My brother bought four iPads in this ten years. One day he saw me with my iPad and the Pencil. "What is that?" he asked. Never even knew it existed.Do you use a pencil, I imagine many people like myself, bought one, used it twice then never again.
Yeah, they’re not doing well are they? 😂This is what happens when you put an operations guy to make decisions.
It’s just an engineering trade off, and you pick which is more important: camera position or pencil support. Me, I picked screen size and got a 12.9” pro. But seriously, if you get this dramatic over small potatoes like this, how do you scale up to things that are actually important? a lot of people have pointed out correctly how few people actually use a pencil even if they bought one. For the vast majority, this is a nonissue. If it’s a biggie for you, pick an iPad you like. You act as though there’s only one choice. If I needed an iPad, I'd take the 9th gen over this one. The 10th gen which isn't compatible with Pencil 2 is a complete joke, an insult to customers. Very, very sad.
But then every time you change the design you have a way to make people pay more and keep moving all prices up. You know who likes that? Wall Street. The thing that interest me is that we apparently need to pay more for the new design. A new design should slot into the same pricing in my opinion, especially with the compromises involved.
Sure, Apple is doing great. Financially.Yeah, they’re not doing well are they? 😂
I'm betting sales on the iPad and the Pencil has increased since they were released. so, job done…
I don’t see what the fuss is.
$150 is a lot of money at this level. It’s a third again the price. Nothing ‘just a bit more’ about it.The iPad 10 is thicker than the iPad Air because the display is non-laminated, thus thicker overall.
The iPad 10 is perfectly priced, to nudge people to simply get the Air for just $150 more.
Should someone confused by one adapter really be reviewing technology? You need a confusing set of adapters if you want to charge the Apple Pencil with your iPad...
You literally say why it didn't use the Pencil 2 in the video....and it isn't clear why Apple didn't just add Apple Pencil 2 compatibility.
Maybe. But imo people who are strapped for money will probably lean towards the $329 iPad anyway. If $150 is a lot, They will save $120 by getting the iPad 9 instead of the iPad 10. The price differences are quite strategically set by Apple.$150 is a lot of money at this level. It’s a third again the price. Nothing ‘just a bit more’ about it.
70+% of college students use iPads, and almost 20% of school devices are Apple. You bet your life they care.I don't think Apple cared that much about the edu market. I mean they already change the port to USB-C, rendering a lot of lightning cables and accessories obsolete.
Existing folk who have an older iPad will already have a Pencil 1 or Logitech Crayon. No need to spend another $129 - nice. Everyone else can save $30-60So that's already a punch to those markets. Sticking to Pencil 1 seems more of an excuse to upsell people to the Air than a compromise for edu market.
Thus ipad feels more of literally a product designed by MBAs and marketing as a decoy product to upsell people to the Air. The fact that they keep the old ipad 9 in the lineup showed it as well. People in the budget would get the iPad 9, while people already willing to spend $500+ will think "oh might as well just get the Air".
Not everyone has an extra $150 to spend on new toys. If it's within budget you were probably going to buy the Air anyhow.Enter this decoy iPad 10 for $450. People looking for cheap iPad will remain buying the iPad 9, but those on the fence whether to get the Air or not would now be more likely nudged to get the Air, as the price difference now is only $150 between that and the iPad 10.
1. Used for anything other than the most basic scribbling, it makes no sense, or difference to use the more expensive Pencil on a unlaminated display IMHO.Well, from normal for-profit perspective, wouldn't you want those few people who are interested in Apple Pencil buy the more expensive Pencil 2 instead?
Prior to this iPad 10, there's a huge gap between the $329 iPad 9 and the $600 iPad Air that was only filled with the iPad mini. I'm sure many consumers on the fence would lean more towards the $329 iPad 9 as they probably don't think the iPad Air is worth almost double the price.
The "cheap" unlaminated display is thicker. And the 10 is not just incrementally thicker than the Air. You can clearly see and even feel the difference when put side side-by-side. Perhaps someone could explain why the 10 has to be thicker given it’s so similar in most ways to the Air. Just to be different and/or to emphasize the Air being called the Air?
I have a Pro that I got a few years ago, today I use it to read and not much more. Will be the last one I ever buy, my 14 Pro Max is more than sufficient to do everything I need. You said it's a good deal for most people? Some people will really follow any path Apple leads them down. This iPad is one of the most insulting things I've seen my favorite brand do in my lifetime.

Four hundred and fifty dollars? For that piece of crap? What is nice about it compared to the $329 9th generation, can you let me know what they improved for over a hundred dollar increase? The "cheap" iPad costs almost as much as the original only iPad available was. It's like you don't even realize how much they cost. 450, 600, 1200... iPads are the worst thing Apple makes without a doubt right now. They have no strategy, no plan, no direction, and they're awkwardly still trying to be a computer, but never a Mac. They need to give it some design direction and reasonable pricing. It's hard to recommend anyone get an iPad of any kind, unless its used or on sale for their kid.Apple provides multiple paths for iPad buyers, with each price point being a little nicer than the one below.
Current designWhat is nice about it compared to the $329 9th generation, can you let me know what they improved for over a hundred dollar increase?
It's objectively nicer? Yeah it has a new design and some BARELY updated, expected spec bump to a slightly newer iPhone chip. USBC is not EVEN USB 3. Apple cheaped out to find, and add, a USB TWO TYPE C port just to insist it can't compete with the Pros. If you like the landscape camera thats great. Apple doesn't seem to think it matters because the Pros still have the portrait camera. The new keyboard costs TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS. For $700 you can get the most basic iPad with Apple's keyboard. Who is this for? It's ridiculous and as a major Apple fan, I would never, ever, buy this. At the point I'm spending 700 I better get an Apple Pencil that works without a dongle, at least.Current design
Larger screen
1GB more RAM
Faster chip
Better camera with smart HDR 3 and 4K video.
5G
USB-C
Landscape camera
Speakers optimized for landscape
New keyboard design with trackpad
It's objectively nicer than the iPad-9, and since price is subjective the consumer can decide if those upgrades are with the premium. A better option is a discounted iPad Air 4, but not everyone wants refurbished or used stuff.

Exactly right!Apple provides multiple paths for iPad buyers, with each price point being a little nicer than the one below.
Ah, the joy of having a thing and being delighted with it.I think it is a clever product - typical of Apples management of cost and supply chain.
Most of the forum members hate it - most of the users love it.
My daughter is very happy with hers and the reception in her social media circles is also very positive
(not macrumors, slashdot etc.)
That’s likely because the Apple you loved as a teenager was focusing on attracting folks like you were when you were a teenager with plenty of purchasing years ahead of you. Today, Apple is focusing on attracting folks like today’s teenagers with plenty of purchasing years ahead of THEM. And, 15 years from now, some of today’s teenagers will bemoan an Apple that’s no longer the one THEY loved.a company that is no longer the Apple I loved when I was a teenager, fifteen years ago.
I don’t think so. Nostalgia is human nature, so I don’t think it’s wrong. I’ve worked with folks that shifted from Apple to other platforms, getting them set up, and for some, being in a position where they just didn’t care what Apple was doing (BECAUSE they were no longer dependent on them for products and software) was a great move for them. It’s definitely worth looking into.Maybe I'm wrong for wanting the old Apple. Maybe I should see if there's something else out there outside of the Apple way, since Apple is already becoming more like everyone else in tech with every passing year.
Meh. Consumers can decide if they like the upgrades. No one is being forced to buy the iPad-10.It's objectively nicer? Yeah it has a new design and some BARELY updated, expected spec bump to a slightly newer iPhone chip. USBC is not EVEN USB 3. Apple cheaped out to find, and add, a USB TWO TYPE C port just to insist it can't compete with the Pros.
If Apple didn't think it mattered the iPad-10 wouldn't have it; they could have saved money by not developing it. The Pros will get it next year with a redesign to accommodate a new Apple Pencil 3.If you like the landscape camera thats great. Apple doesn't seem to think it matters because the Pros still have the portrait camera.
All of Apple's iPad keyboards are expensive compared to 3rd party, but the iPad 9's keyboard isn't as good as the iPad-10's. The iPad 10 is for people who want an iPad which is nicer than the 9 but doesn't cost as much as the Air.The new keyboard costs TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS. For $700 you can get the most basic iPad with Apple's keyboard. Who is this for? It's ridiculous and as a major Apple fan, I would never, ever, buy this.
