Why is everyone ripping on the personas? How else can you be represented in a FaceTime call without a camera facing you? Even if there was a camera facing you, you still have this thing strapped to your face. What are we expecting here?
You are right, it's a difficult problem. But this doesn't change the fact that FaceTiming or videoconferencing this way is creepy for the other people. (Quote from one reviewer's wife: "Don't ever call me again using that thing.") My personal conclusion is that a VR headset is simply unsuitable for video calls, and that it is a mistake from Apple to try to make it look like a workable thing.

Good lord, if you wear this massive contraption to prepare and cook a meal in the kitchen you look like the ultimate nerd bozo.
Someone posted this on Threads. Who in the world would strap on $3500 heavy googles to show timers over pots on the stove? I would be worried about getting the thing dirty or the steam getting the device wet.

After going through some of the first reviews it seems the Vision Pro is already a great working device and a smashing entertainment device (if one accepts the personal use only).
The other use cases seem like a bit miss or just not interesting.
Still, pretty good stuff to build on.

It seems like a cool concept, but the idea of using your eyes (which are already being used to look at things) for cursor input seems like something that doesn’t really work as a high-productivity input method.

People get good at typing when they stop looking down at the keyboard - that goes for physical and touch keyboards, musical keyboards, and other input devices such as game controllers - in other words, when they decouple visual focus and input.
Yeah, and it is worrying that Apple doesn't seem to have noticed that important point over 10 years of R&D, or seems to be ignoring it. This is certainly not the "future of computing".

Apple is staying as far away from gaming as possible so as not to be compared to VR headsets. The device is too heavy to use for fitness/workouts. But they know they need more than ‘it’s great for watching movies’ so they’re pushing certain productivity angles that I’m not sure will stick long-term. From John Gruber’s mostly positive review it was pretty clear that right now VP is best as an entertainment device for watching movies/TV shows.

So much they can do to get the price down.

Get rid of the glass thing on the front, pointless!

Make it plastic which is cheaper and also make it lighter

Get rid of the battery pack and just put a cable ending in a USB C so any battery can be used which most have lying about

Get rid of the power brick

Get rid of the accessories
Add to that list:

Get rid of the CEO 🤣

Nice batch of first reviews, there's at least one source which I consider objective so I trust that review as well and they liked it except for a couple of small things.

John Gruber’s review was mostly positive but he did say this:

This is why VP will be nothing more than a niche product. I am surprised Apple is running commercials for it during the NFL playoffs. The commercials are definitely targeted to the average consumer but they’re not going to be buying this.

Gruber also shared a photo of the EyeSight camera. My prediction is it will be the first thing Apple ditches to bring down cost and reduce weight.

Well the ultimate aim will be to have no screen at all... The reason they are pushing this as AR over VR is I am sure they have long term plans for proper wave guide direct to eye imaging tech. Or direct fibre imaging like Magic leap made its Billions of investment on...before backtracking to waveguide.

Simple normal glasses will be the aim eventually.

I am shocked that this doesn't have some form of internal battery that lasts say 2 mins so you can hot swap batteries...

It's just shuts down and you have to reboot and find where you were again.. Seems like the simplest thing.
Yeah, I really expected that feature and it seems like a dumb oversight. Hopefully someone will release a small battery which attaches to the headband.

the review I read that was the most damning was that everything looks as if you are looking through binoculars. It doesn't fill your peripheral space. I was expecting it to fill my entire field of view based on the ads and the $3500 price

“I feel myself slipping into long sessions in Vision Pro, but my eyes want me to take breaks.”

That’s a good thing. People need to take breaks when starting at screens for a while. If you haven’t looked away much from a screen in an hour, take a break and allow your eyes to focus on different things at different depths.

AVP should help with this because you can do the pass through video and change the depth of your eye focus.

Honestly, Im kinda disappointed in the quality of the outer display. Eyesight doesn't look anywhere near as good as in the marketing pics on Apples web site.

I wonder what the added cost, weight and toll on battery life is from this display. My guess is not negligible

The other thing I thought was interesting was Nilay’s point about how your eyes are the mouse cursor, and you need to look at every button to click it.

It has to act as a self -contained computer, but I think Apple expects everyone to use a mouse and keyboard in a high productivity environment. Think about it this way, when laptops came out an attached mouse was faster than the trackball, they still are to me when it comes to fast work, but laptops still had to have full controls. Similarly, a physical keyboard is better than an onscreen keyboard, but the iPad has to be self-contained.

I am surprised that you can't change the size of the keyboard or change to full querty.

Those personas are disgraceful. 3500$ pricetag, 10 years in the making, and THIS is what they've come up with? A cheap 3D render of somebody's face? Oh come on.

And those eyes... that feature needs to go away, it's just scary.

So developers, celebrities, influencers and a few people reading this are unknowingly beta testing their product after plopping down $3.5K plus for the privilege?
I thoroughly enjoyed my time beta-testing the original Powerbook, iPod, and iPhone.

The price is the price, don't buy it if you cant afford it.

You can't hot-swap the battery of your iPhone. But you can attach a power bank. The AVP is exactly equivalent. One needs to think of the battery as being built-in.

All the reviewers say this. It’s the consistent message. You’ll notice the weight. Can’t wear long. Soreness. Headache. Etc. That kinda gets in the way of being productive or watching a movie but what do I know.
And don’t forget it messes up your hair. Yeah, this thing will definitely need a weight reduction with gen. 2 in addition to a few other things.

urgh, the biased YouTuber's reviews are out again, why do you do this to me, MacRumours.
Did you see the S24 Ultra ones?

"Phone of the year 2024"

For what amounts to an incremental stat upgrade over the S23 Ultra + some situational AI?!

The Oneplus 12 (released last week) is a heck of an upgrade over the previous model and is capable of things like interpolation in gaming so all titles, regardless of age can be played at 120fps. And thats on a device $500 cheaper than the S24 Ultra.

Anything to make January seem more exciting than it actually is.
