Very interesting. Just read a lengthy report on fingerprint scanners. Current one on iPhone is capacitance but there are also optical and ultrasounds. I wonder which type this is. I just hope it is as fast and accurate as current implementation.

Also this report hints at why Apple might be charging more for the phone - the price of this technology is currently prohibitive for a phone. Thus the increased price.

iPhone 8 (9,10) ...
Hope, the whole screen will be a one, big fingerprint sensor!
Any other case (a small square behind the screen) is a sh-i-||y experience (as it is at the moment with current iPhones).
Peace!
Right now is a bad experience? Compared to what? TouchID as currently implemented is one of the biggest technological use facing improvements I have seen in the iphones. Maybe the biggest. Hiding it behind a screen sounds amazinger.

There is a difference "in first to announce" vs "first to conceptualize".
And the biggest difference is first to ship with it done right.

Maybe vivo will win all those, maybe not.

Personally, I would sacrifice a few milliseconds of speed for the advantage of under screen fingerprint scanning.

I agree that accuracy would need to be top notch though for security purposes.

This will be the first implementation on iPhones so yes, whilst being able to sense anywhere on the screen could be the ideal, if it meant this technology being available on the next iPhone, I'd accept having to use a specific area of the screen.

After all, the mechanical sensor that exists at the moment is in a specific area on the front and that doesn't cause me an issue.

They could then show off fullscreen implementation, if they desired, as a key feature of the "S" model.

Are some of those icons lifted from iOS in these mockups, or are they actually that slavishly copied in this version of Android?

Nothing to do with stock Android.

Vivo is a Chinese phone maker with their own custom Android skin called FunTouch... which yes, directly mimics much of iOS 10.

Vivo is often called the poor man's iPhone, because it looks similar and reviews say is just as lag free.

Once again, it’s not about rushing to be the “first”, it’s about waiting to implement it the best. Apple is the only company that seems to understand this. Although for once, it looks like they really will be the first (and best).

It seems rather convenient "unveiling" it now with the disclaimer "it's just a prototype", with the new iPhone (and possibly other Android flagships) coming up later this year.

If you have the technology, manufacture and sell it. I'm sick of OEM's vaporware.

Agreed.

I think this is why some people think Apple isn't innovative. They judge these kind of prototypes against what you can go and buy from an Apple Store.

Imagine if we could see what Apple is working on.

I think most people haven't noticed the difference that you pointed out.

The Qualcomm ultrasonic sensor sits in one spot behind the display. Previous Apple rumors were of IR sensors built into the entire display.

While it'd be interesting to be able to use any spot, an advantage of a separate sensor is that you're not dependent on a combined embedded sensor display yield. In other words, you could buy displays from any source, and not just ones able to embed an optical sensor array.

Also, big differences in recognition tech. Ultrasonic is still print based and can check for pulse. IR is more finger shape based.

All assuming such rumors are real, of course.

Any other case (a small square behind the screen) is a sh-i-||y experience!

Not so bad. People are already used to having to put their finger on a certain spot.

Well, anything less than this will now be a huge disappointment in the 8. Though I still worry we won't see this tech until another year.

Very cool, glad it's shown to be possible but I hope Apple makes some allowances in the UI for this. There is something really awkward about the phone unlocking and your finger is now resting on the icon dock.

Really? Is it a ****** experience on every phone now? Because they all use one dedicated area for finger print sensing

I bet Apple's really ****
I bet Apple couldn't give a ****

I can't help but think that apple would be "leaking" information about the next iphone to suggest touchID is on the back if that was the case. With the amount of press, rumours and excitement/expectation around the display-integrated touchID I think it would really dull whatever else the iphone 8 has if it doesn't have the integrated touchID.

I may be overthinking this but leaking the fact its on the back would allow people to come to terms with it before the presentation

Exactly. Thats what you see happen every year.
There are some far-off hopes, then as the launch grows nearer, news is officially leaked to quash rumors that's won't be in the product, so they don't end up with a crowd of onlookers on launch date, Expecting Y but only getting X.
It's natural Apple leak news to do this, as you don't want an audience expecting more that you are about to show off.

So the software is an iOS clone and the design is a iPhone/Galaxy mashup.

These people really have no shame in straight up copying, do they?

...why? So when the Purchase with touch ID popup comes up you accidentally buy in-app purchases? Or apple pay triggers with the wrong card selected?

Having it in the same place makes the UX consistent vs. apps asking for a fingerprint in the top right corner or any other random spot on screen.
