I think we do not 100% comprehend full capabilities of Asia's engineers. Commonly know for being the place where most tech is manufactured, but they came with this and if I´m not wrong they were first with and edge to edge display. I´m not saying that first is best, but it shows a high level of engineering, maybe higher than the ones we are used to. Another example are electric cars, probably the first think that comes to your mind is Tesla, however China is the one leading this.

Apple filed a patent on this a couple years ago. Hmm.

You don't file a patent. like you don't save a certain goal. You file an application. Filing means nothing in this context, other set a precedent date if a patent is subsequently granted ; that means we think we have a novel idea and we dont think anyones else has done it before....patent granted means it was a novel idea and no one else can do it without your permission.

Even though Apple have done nothing to encourage the talk of under screen fingerprint sensing in the next iPhone I still think, given this announcement, that it would be of significant embarrassment to Apple if they did not include this in the next model.

There are a few questions for Apple here though and I suspect there are high level meetings going on about this at the moment.

Do they continue to struggle along to produce their own in house technology to achieve this?

Or, alternatively, do they very quickly kiss and make up with Qualcomm to use these sensors?

Finally, whichever approach they take, are they prepared to delay the release of the new iPhone to perfect this technology?

No matter the route they choose for implementation, I hope the answer to that final question is, "Yes", they will delay.

Other than wild unsourced rumors and speculation, what evidence do you have that Apple is "struggling" and behind Qualcomm with this technology? Or that Apple hasn't got it ready to go in the next iPhone?

I think he's just pointing out that Apple has already been doing extensive work on this type of technology, likely with a different implementation. Showing off a prototype is something Apple could have likely done some time ago, but they wait until the product is ready to ship on a massive scale. What we have here is quite the opposite.

Edit: They actually won the patent as well, not just filed.

Because everything is manufactured in China, I'm sure they just steal the tech.

I hope their technology works better for me than that godawful video soundtrack did!
[doublepost=1498663157][/doublepost]I don't think it will be full-screen. I envision a touch bar at the bottom of the screen, which appears and disappears like a dock or control panel, that has programmable buttons, except for the home button which is right in the middle of the bar, and the active fingerprint area is under that.

Once again, it’s not about rushing to be the “first”, it’s about waiting to implement it the best. Apple is the only company that seems to understand this. Although for once, it looks like they really will be the first (and best).

Of course Apple understands it, they championed / marketed it. But the truth is, there are many instances where being first is all that matters. Businesses have been profiting for many decades if not centuries using this approach, and markets have become saturated by "first" company presences to an insurmountable degrees, such that even the later "bests" weren't able to overcome. The truth is, after being beaten to market, "doing it better" is usually all the others have left to focus on. For many it's a defeatist / defeated perspective.

Though I understand that Apple's philosophy is part of its DNA, perceive it to be justified, and very much love Apple products. I understand that focusing on a perspective of "doing it better" is a quick path to mediocrity for most. As a developer, it is very easy to get blinded by endless improvements and never get to market at all. There needs to be a limiter with such a perspective.

You're correct in saying being first can sometimes be extremely important, but this is clearly not one of those cases. I have never even heard of Vivo and so far they have a prototype and a video.

Apple, can't touch this.

The IP for this came from the west and was handed to them. china isn't leading anything execept stealing and buying.

I personally like the idea of a physical home button. How else do you tell which way the phone is oriented? I can see it now — people constantly flipping their phone around after they realize that it's upside down. Maybe that's an opportunity for Apple.... a "universal display" - works in any orientation! Prepare for the circular iPhone, folks!

So the software is an iOS clone and the design is a iPhone/Galaxy mashup.

These people really have no shame in straight up copying, do they?

They're not designing a phone.

This ad is !&$%. All it focuses on is unlocking the device with a sensor under the screen. Literally, who the $*&@ cares guys? If that's the only reason why you're buying a new phone then you've got some serious FOMO mental issues. Better yet. I hope they all stand in lines on release day so that traffic is less for the rest of us.

Neither of those patents are related to the topic here. Both of those patents cover their existing button sensors, including the one used on the Mac Book Pro.
Read the claims. Has nothing to do with being embedded in/under a display.

Here is the link. Not sure if it is for ultrasonic sensors, but I doubt it. I think their implementation is different, but still achieves the same thing.
They filed a couple granted patents-

Okay, but those are not for ultrasonic or behind the display like this sensor.

I guess you meant having a fingerprint sensor and screen combination in general? That's not new from anyone recent. Patents for those go back to the 1990s from other companies like Philips.

No comment on who has mental issues. That seems obvious. However...

There are at least two reasons why such a sensor arrangement is useful:

1. Allows a bigger display.
2. Allows better waterproofing.

Which is no doubt why every phone maker seems to be pursuing these.

Here it is guys

iphone 7s for the fall 2017.
iphone 8 for early 2018.

Anyone dare to believe that the iphone will have a finger print sensor when the technology isn't fully developed yet?

There's really no need, Apple already has the same thing with their own implementation.
based on what facts?
